Former UK player fell at game
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky says former football player
Brad Durham remains in serious
condition following an accident at
Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday night.
The school has not identified
Durham as the person who fell from
the upper deck to the lower deck in
the fourth quarter of the Wildcats’
45-38 victory over South Carolina.
The university has only stated that
Durham is at UK Chandler Hospital
and that an accident occurred at the
stadium involving a young adult
male.
The athletic department released
a statement Monday night about
Durham’s injuries that said, “The
thoughts and prayers of everyone in
UK Athletics are with Brad Durham
and his family. ... We ask the Big
Blue Nation to join us in wishing
him a speedy recovery and also
grant them their privacy during this
time.”
USA suspends Phelps for DUI
U N D AT E D ( A P ) — U S A
Swimming has suspended Michael
Phelps for six months, forced him
to withdraw from next year’s world
championships and taken away his
funding from the sport’s national
governing body as a result of the
Olympic champion’s second DUI
arrest.
The sanctions announced Monday
won’t keep Phelps from training
with his North Baltimore club, but
he won’t be allowed to participate in
USA Swimming-sanctioned meets
through April 6, 2015. Phelps and
USA Swimming also agreed that he
won’t compete in the world swimming championships in Russia next
July. His monthly funding stipends
will be stopped during the suspension.
Phelps announced he was entering a six-week, in-patient program
last weekend, a week after he was
arrested and charged with drunken
driving in his hometown of Baltimore.
NFL begins HGH testing
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL
has begun testing for human growth
hormone for the first time, three
years after the league and players’
union tentatively agreed to do so.
HGH testing was part of the 2011
labor agreement but was delayed
because the NFL Players Association was not comfortable with the
procedures or science involved.
Both sides agreed last month on
the new policy, which took effect
Monday.
A total of 950 tests will be performed during the regular season,
postseason and preseason. In the
offseason, about 385 tests will be
done. Less than one tablespoon
of blood will be taken from each
player.
Each week during the season, five
players on eight teams will be chosen randomly for testing as part of
the normal testing procedures under
the NFL’s performance enhancing
drug policy. No tests will occur on
game days.
NCAA reforms survive override
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The
NCAA reform plan that transfers
more power to the five richest football conferences has sailed through
a 60-day override period.
The organization says 27 schools
requested an override of the 16-2
decision by the NCAA Board of
Directors on Aug. 7 to allow the
ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and
SEC to unilaterally change some
of the rules that have applied to all
Division I schools for years. If 75
schools had voted for an override,
the board would have been required
to reconsider the plan.
The result of the override period
was announced on Monday.
J-C-D ends Lady Rebels’ ORVC reign
Pacers’ Schirmer,
Taylor run first,
Shiners top boys
By MARK CAMPBELL
Courier Sports Editor
[email protected]
Southwestern’s three-year reign as
Ohio River Valley Conference girls
cross country champions came to an
end Monday when the Lady Rebels
were edged 46-52 by Jac-Cen-Del at
Hanover College.
Jac-Cen-Del won the girls conference championship and Rising Sun
took the boys team championship
while Switzerland County swept both
races individually with sophomore
Whitley Schirmer winning her secondstraight title in 21:05.81 and senior
Talen Taylor closing out his ORVC
career with his second straight title in
17:18.34.
Jac-Cen-Del’s win over Southwestern was the opposite of the way the
two teams finished at the pre-ORVC
meet held at Hanover College less than
a month ago when the Lady Rebels
won 32-44. Rising Sun did not field
a complete team back then and the
Shiners finished third Monday with
89 points — just enough to contribute
to the shakeup at the top.
Coach Zac Nussbaum said the
Rebels hated to see their three-year
win streak come to an end but the
Eagles earned the championship by
out-performing the rest of the conference with a really strong run.
“I told my girls that sometimes
you can have a really good team and
perform really well, but the other team
is just a little better that night,” Nussbaum said. “We did not lose tonight,
Jac-Cen-Del WON it. Jac-Cen-Del ran
really well. They have a really strong
team and a really good coach. You
REPEAT WINNERS: Switzerland County’s Talen Taylor (photo top, 248) breaks from the start of the boys Ohio
River Valley Conference meet and the Lady Pacers’ Whitley Schirmer (photo above, 188) cruises uncontested
to the finish of the girls race. Both runners won their second consecutive ORVC titles. These and other photos

just have to congratulate them and get
ready for Sectionals.”
Schirmer, who had finished about
14 seconds behind to Rising Sun’s
Kinzie Scott at the pre-ORVC, faced
no such hurdle in defending her 2013
ORVC title on Monday. Scott, who
also plays on the Shiner’s soccer team,
missed the meet due to an injury she
sustained playing soccer and that left
the door wide open for Schirmer to
cruise to the win.
“I really wasn’t pushed by any-
body out there today,” said Schirmer,
who broke cleanly at the start, pulled
away from the field on the runout
and won the 5K race by 45 seconds
over Southwestern’s Savannah Rueda.
“One of my goals was to come here
and win conference again. I want to
try and win this all four years.”
Rueda, a senior, ran a 21:50.92 and
was more than 30 seconds ahead of
third place finisher Cameron Ray,
another sophomore from Switzerland
County.
Rising Sun put four runners in the
top 15 and all five in the top 20 to
win the boys race by 14 points and
deny Jac-Cen-Del a conference team
sweep 53-67.
South Ripley was 10 points back in
third and Southwestern finished fourth
with 81 points despite competing
without the services of Conner Skirvin
and with Josiah Lawson slowed by
injury.

Schroeder was 10-of-11 serving with
an ace, six kills, three blocks and
nine digs; Sydney Weaver was 8-of10 serving with an ace and 28 digs;
Kayla Baker was 6-of-8 serving with
two aces, 11 kills, seven blocks and
27 sets; Shelbe Black had had four
aces, 17 kills and six blocks; Kaylee
Clifford was 8-of-9 serving with
two aces, three kills and two blocks;
Kayla Greenwood had six kills and
two blocks; and Katie Gonterman had
a kill and a block.
Trimble improves to 9-9 overall and
5-0 in the NCKC with the win. Due to
a change in NCKC policy, only one
game against conference teams count
in the league standings. As a result,
Trimble has only one official conference game left, at Williamstown in
the regular-season finale on Oct. 15. A
victory over Williamstown will clinch
the conference crown outright.
Trimble still has two other games
left against NCKC teams, although
neither will count in the conference
standings. The Raiders travel to Carroll County today and host Henry
County on Thursday.

Kentucky Conference teams reached 41 with the win.
The last time Trimble lost to an NCKC
foe in the regular season was on Oct.
6, 2010 when the Raiders dropped a
three-setter to Henry County.
The latest win in the streak wasn’t
easy. The Raiders trailed most of the
way in game one before rallying to
beat Owen 25-23 then suffered a 2521 setback in game two.
Trimble then regrouped and closed

“We missed a lot of serves tonight.
Every single player missed a serve.
It was a total team effort,” Trimble
coach Ruth Staples said. “I think the
big reason for our sluggishness was
the fact that we haven’t played in over
a week because of cancellations. We
haven’t practiced since Thursday and
it’s fall break. All of that made for a
sluggish night.”
Kate Staples was 12-of-15 serving

two blocks for the Raiders. Destiny
Cubs win 3-0 over Shawe
Madison scored an easy volleyball win over crosstown rival Shawe
Memorial in three games Monday at
home.
The Lady Cubs, ranked 16th in
Class 3A, won 25-18, 25-12 and 2516.
“We played a strong match against a
very good team. Coach (Jeff) Lawson
sure has some talented players who
can hit the ball hard with accuracy,”
Shawe coach Mike Armstrong said.
“I was extremely pleased with some
of our digs that kept us in the match.
We also competed at the net with a
season-high in blocks. We wanted to
forget the score and compete.”

Southwestern had tied Rising
Sun 50-50 at the pre-ORVC
and edged the Shiners on a
sixth-man tie-breaker. However, Skirvin had run sixth at
the pre-ORVC and the injured
Lawson slipped from a fifth
place at the pre-ORVC to 33rd
on Monday.
“I was really proud of my
boys tonight, with almost all of
them having their best time for
the Hanover College course,”
Nussbaum said. “As a team
they have fought through some
adversity and really stuck with
it. We have had some guys
really step up in the absence of
others and I am really proud of
them for that.”
While the boys team conference championship was a fairly
close race, the competition for
top individual was a runaway
from the start.
Taylor — just like Schirmer
had done before him in the girls
race — annihilated the competition in the boys 5K event.
“I wanted to come out and
run a personal record,” Taylor
said of his performance. “I
think I could have run a faster
time but there was nobody
to push me so I had to push
myself.”
Taylor, who had ran a
17:04.71 in winning the 2013
ORVC meet over teammate
Braden Burk, ran a 17:18.34
Monday.
Like Schirmer, Taylor broke
cleanly at the start gradually
pulled away from the field on
the runout and then essentially
ran without anyone in contact

— Madison swept Shawe
Memorial in two games in
junior varsity volleyball action
Monday at Madison.
Lydia Arney was 20-for-20
serving with nine aces and two
digs for Madison, Ainsly Liter
was 9-of-11 serving with four
aces and eight kills, Maddie
Thomas was 6-of-7 serving
with an ace and Hannah Imel
both agreed that Monday’s easy
win should leave more fuel
in their tanks for Saturday’s
IHSAA Sectional on the same
course — a race that should
not lack for competition in the
lead pack.
Saturday’ sectional is the
next race for each of the ORVC
teams but only Southwestern,
Switzerland County and Shawe
will be back in Hanover. JacCen-Del, Rising Sun, South
Ripley and Milan all compete
in the South Dearborn Sectional.
WINNER: Switzerland

was about 51 seconds ahead
of runner-up Zach Martini, a
sophomore from Rising Sun

forward to a strong finish to the

Rebels fall at Austin
Southwestern volleyball lost
3-1 to potential sectional foe
Austin Monday on the road.
The Rebels won the opening
game 25-22 but lost in the final
three games 26-24, 25-13 and
25-23.
“I thought we played poorly
tonight overall. I will give credit
to the girls that they never gave
up and we came back from some
pretty significant deficits but we
never really got into any kind of
rhythm tonight,” Southwestern
coach Chris Johnson said. “Our
offense was committing way
too many errors throughout the
match. In the first set alone we
had 11 attacking errors.”
Skyla Judkins was 16-for-17
serving with an ace and 14 kills
for the Rebels; Mariah Franklin
had 12 kills and was 7-for-8 serving with an ace; Madison Coles
had five kills and three blocks;

serving with an ace, four kills
and 20 assists; and Kelsi Brierly
was 14-for-15 serving with five
aces, was 20-for-23 passing and
had 17 digs.
“We did have Skyla (Judkins)
and Mariah (Franklin) find some
openings on offense and they had
some success late in the match.”
Johnson said. “I am a little comforted to know that we didn’t
play very well but we still had a
chance to win the match. I think
we may see Austin again in the
sectional tournament. Hopefully,
we will play better next time.”
Southwestern (10-13) can
clinch the Ohio River Valley
Conference championships
outright when the Rebels host
Switzerland County tonight.
Southwestern is 5-0 in league
play.

Effects of psoriasis are not
confined to the skin
DEAR DOCTOR K: My doctor thinks my arthritis and heart
disease are connected to my psoriasis. Is this possible? I thought
psoriasis was a skin condition.
DEAR READER: Psoriasis
(pronounced so-RYE-uh-sis) is
named for an ancient Greek word
Dr.
meaning an itchy or scaly condition.
Anthony L. It is classified as a skin disease, but
psoriasis is the result of an immune
Komaroff
system abnormality that can cause
M.D.
problems throughout the body.
With psoriasis, white blood cells
of the immune system become
overactive. They produce excess amounts of chemicals that trigger
inflammation. The inflammation leads to abnormally rapid growth
of cells in the skin’s outer layer. This causes plaques: raised, red
patches covered with silvery scales on the elbows and knees -- the
classic sign of psoriasis. (I’ve put a photo of psoriasis plaques on
my website, AskDoctorK.com.)
But the effects of psoriasis are not always confined to the skin.
The disease also can cause inflammation throughout the body. This
probably is the reason that people with psoriasis have higher rates
of various diseases that also are associated with a constant state of
inflammation. These include diabetes, heart disease, high blood
pressure and several types of cancer.
Nearly one-third of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic
arthritis, which causes stiff, painful joints and other symptoms.
Several eye problems are more common with psoriasis, including
conjunctivitis, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and damage
to the cornea.
When psoriasis involves only the skin, it often can be treated just
by medicines applied to the skin. Very mild cases of psoriasis may
improve with moisturizers and some sunlight. But most people need
other treatments:
-- OINTMENTS, GELS OR LOTIONS. The most common are
corticosteroids, which come in varying strengths. They quickly
reduce inflammation and control itching. Long-term use of strong
steroids can thin and damage skin.
-- PHOTOTHERAPY. This treatment uses carefully controlled
exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps slow the growth of
skin cells. UV light combined with medicines called psoralens often
are more potent than just UV light (a treatment called PUVA).
-- SYSTEMIC THERAPY. If your psoriasis has caused more than
skin problems, this can have implications for the kind of treatment
your doctor may recommend. Treatments that fight inflammation in
multiple parts of the body may be required. Medicines that do this
include methotrexate, retinoids and cyclosporine.
Research in recent years has led to biologic agents that directly
neutralize some of the body’s chemicals (called cytokines) that cause
inflammation. They have proved very effective in severe psoriasis.
Though they carry a risk of serious side effects, the benefits generally are greater than the risks.
Exercise and weight loss, which help fight inflammation, may
help. Adopting other healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding
tobacco and eating well, can help prevent health problems linked
to psoriasis.
If it seems that I’m recommending a healthy lifestyle as the cure
for every human ailment, that’s because it really is true: A healthy
lifestyle can reduce the risk of, and suffering from, many major
illnesses.
You must take care of losers
Henry Ford said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”
That applies to bridge partners. And for declarer, when
the dummy comes down in a suit contract, it is so important
that he start moving forward by counting his losers.
Assuming his hand has at least as many trumps as the
dummy, he looks at his own 13 cards and takes dummy’s
high cards into account. Then, if the loser count is not too
high, declarer should draw trumps as quickly as possible.
But if the loser count
is too high, declarer
must work out how to
eliminate the excess.
In this deal, how
many losers does South
have in four hearts,
given that West leads
the club queen? How
should he plan the play?
The bidding was
straightforward,
North jumping to
game with opening
count when he found
a 4-4 major-suit fit.
South starts with at
least five losers: two
spades, one heart or
two, and two clubs. But
he has discards coming
on dummy’s diamonds.
Declarer takes
the first trick with
dummy’s club ace, plays a diamond to his ace, leads
a heart to dummy’s ace, and shakes his club losers on
the diamond king-queen. Then he plays a spade to his
ace and leads another spade. Suppose West returns a
club. South trumps, ruffs a spade in the dummy, leads
a trump to his king, and plays on spades to land an
overtrick. West makes his trump winner whenever he likes.
Notice the commonplace concepts of discarding losers from hand and ruffing losers in the dummy.
