PRB Motorsport Pty Ltd Newsletter Issue 46 All Correspondence: October 2014 8/31 Wentworth Ave Greenacre NSW 2190 Springnews Photos courtesy of Priceless Images The PRBs raced with the CAMS NSW Motor Race Championship categories at Wakefield Park on September 20-21, and some very close finishes were the result. Going in to the round, Chris Barry was leading in the Series pointscore by a small margin from Stef Versluis and Stuart Shirvington, and all three runners needed a good weekend to stay in the hunt. UP-COMING EVENTS Round 6 is the Shannons Nationals Meeting, SMP November 1-2, 2014 PRB Motorsport Pty Ltd Page 1 PRB RACE SERIES 2014 This series is open to any car sold by PRB or its agents, with a CAMS Type 2B or 2A logbook. This includes the new PRB Widebody and the UK Westfields previously sold by PRB. This year there are only two classes Class A – 1601cc to 2000cc modified Class B – Up to 2000cc standard-engined Round 5 – NSWMRC Wakefield Park, September 20-21, 2014 Practice and qualifying The weather for the weekend was fine and dry, and the track was fast. At the close of the qualifying session it was Chris Barry on pole very closely followed by Stuart Shirvington, Stefan Versluis, and Tony Blanche. All of these drivers were within one second of each other. In Class B, Trent Shirvington was a clear leader over Joshua Versluis, and not far behind some of the Class A cars. Qualifying times and positions are shown below. This would test the general fitness of the drivers and their cars. Race 1 (16 Laps) The first race proved to be very exciting. At the front of the race, Chris Barry got a clean start from pole, but by the end of the first lap, Stuart was in the lead. Chris regained the lead in the following lap and thereafter was not headed and went on to win. However, he was chased very closely all the way by Stuart and Stef Versluis, and after 16 laps they were less than one second behind. Stuart registered the fastest lap in the race. PRB Motorsport Pty Ltd Page 2 Further back there was a lot of excitement. Tony Blanche and Jos Kroon got past James Dick on the second lap into fourth and fifth place. Ivan pulled into the pits after three laps, as his car seemed to be off song. Tony opened up a gap and continued pretty much on his own, until he pulled off into the pits with one lap to go. Ivan had to pull into the pits Jos continued to lead the following bunch, closely followed by Malcolm Lee, James Dick and Trent Shirvington. All was well until the tenth lap, when Mal's car suddenly lost power in the fish hook corner, forcing those behind to go in all directions. Because Jos was ahead of Mal, he was not troubled and went on to take a good fourth place. Trent spun off the track and was well in last place before he got going again. As a consolation, he registered the fastest lap for Class B. All this drama brought out the yellow flags, which were still waving when Chris and Stuart arrived pretty much side by side. This raised a question in a flag marshalls eyes as to whether Chris or Stuart was overtaking under yellow flags, and Chris was called to the Stewards after the race to clarify that neither driver had in fact done so. Mals's problem proved to be problem in the distributor that caused the engine timing to go right off. Final positions in Race 1 are shown below. There were only two class B runners in the form of Trent Shirvington and Joshua Versluis and the intent was that they would get a 28-second start before the Class A cars started. On this occasion the starters got the timing right, and Trent and Josh headed off while the others waited. When the Class A cars started, Stuart Shirvington got a very good start from the back row, passing the other Class A cars around the outside, and was the leading Class A car at the end of the first lap, followed by Jos Kroon and James Dick. Trent was driving well at the front and slowly opened a gap over Josh. Stuart leads the Div A cars after his blinder of a start On lap 6, Malcolm Lee retired with a problem, as his car went off song. It was found that a grub screw on the throttle body had disappeared, allowing air to by-pass the butterfly on cylinder four. Jos, Trent and Josh in close formation PRB Motorsport Pty Ltd Page 4 At the front of the Class A cars, Stuart was driving really hard trying to catch his brother. He succeeded in this with one lap to go, and went on to take the race win. Trent held on to take second place, 4.6 seconds ahead of Chris Barry, who was 2.2 seconds ahead of Stef Versluis. Joshua Versluis was fifth ahead of all the other Class A cars, and registered the fastest lap of Class B. Chris Barry got the fastest lap of Class A. Final positions in Race 2 are shown below. The grid positions for race three were based on the finishing positions from race one. So it was Chris Barry on pole and Stuart Shirvington alongside. Chris led off, but Stuart managed to get past on the first lap. Then it was a close tussle for the next four laps, with Chris threatening and Stuart driving with both elbows out. Then on the sixth lap, Stuart tried too hard and spun out on Turn 2. The left Chris in the lead, and he went on to take the win and fastest lap. PRB Motorsport Pty Ltd Page 5 A close start to Race 3 Behind these two, Tony Blanche and Stef Verluis were very close all race with Tony mainly leading, apart from lap 11 when Stef briefly got past. So Tony finally finished second just 0.2 seconds ahead of Stef. James Dick was fourth, ahead of Stuart Shirvington, who had recovered from the rear of the field after his spin. Then it was Jos, Ivan and Joshua. Joshua Versluis achieved fastest lap for Class B just ahead of Trent Shirvington. Trent had pulled off the circuit after 7 laps with oil leaking from below his engine, and Malcolm returned to the pits on lap 14, with his engine down on power. Never much distance between Chris and Stuart PRB Motorsport Pty Ltd Page 6 Final positions in Race 3 are shown below. The last column in the table above shows what the points would be if there were only 5 rounds and the Series was completed. However, there is still one round to go and all three drivers could win for 2014 after the Shannons Round scheduled for November 1-2 at Sydney Motorsport Park. In Div B Josh Versluis has been consistent all year, and his many class wins have ensured he will take out Div B, but he does not have enough points to challenge the Div A leaders. Driver of the Meetings was Chris Barry due to his consistency, his two wins and fastest qualifying/ two race laps.
