Letter of Introduction
Dear Prospective Corporate Partner,
Greetings from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) UCLA Student Section!
Thank you for taking the time to see how your corporation can make a difference. Your support is what
enables the next generation of engineers to develop the skills they need to change the world. We
invite you and your company to learn more about our organization through this booklet and to join us
in fostering excellence, innovation, and growth in engineering at UCLA.
IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technology for the
benefit of humanity. At the university level, we share the organization's vision for technological
excellence and professional global interaction and are responsible for preparing students for exciting
careers in technology. By encouraging networking with professionals and learning and applying
technical know-how outside the classroom, we hope to achieve our goal: aiding in the development of
exceptional engineers who can make a positive impact in the future.
During the school year, we host general meetings with our members and information sessions
with corporate representatives to cultivate our members' interpersonal skills and to foster their
professional development. Students are also invited to our annual Student-Professional Awareness
Venture (S-PAVe) and our yearly Ethics Competition to further sharpen their professional skill set. UCLA
IEEE has also partnered with the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science to
create a school-wide mentorship program. We are also starting a research paper oriented program to
allow students to engage in academic discussions and writing.
UCLA IEEE is strongly dedicated to the technical development of students through hands-on
experience. We offer a multitude of projects for students of every level. From our perennial projects,
Natcar and Micromouse, to our program for first and second year students, Open Project Space (OPS),
we invite all students to participate in our hands-on projects. We also host IEEE Essentials, a beginner’s
circuits workshop for all UCLA students to learn the basics to soldering and prototyping. We encourage
you to read the detailed descriptions of each of these projects to see how they help foster students'
innovation, creativity and problem-solving skills.
With over 300 student members, UCLA IEEE has been annually growing. Please take the time to
look through this booklet, and see why IEEE at UCLA was awarded the 2011-12 Student Organization of
the Year for the second year in a row. Our sky-high ambitions require financial support and without the
generous donations from companies such as yours, we would not have accomplished so much since
our chapter's founding in 1963. Remember that your donation is tax-deductible. By supporting IEEE,
you are not only aiding young engineers, but will advertise your company, and have access to one of
the world’s richest pools of young engineers. We appreciate all levels of sponsorship; whether your
company is willing to contribute money, supplies, or time to come meet with our members.
Thank you again for your time and generosity. Please feel free to contact us with any questions,
or visit us online at http://www.ieee.ucla.edu/.
Sincerely,
Jack Lei

NATCAR
Natcar is one of two UCLA IEEE capstone
design projects. Over the course of the academic
year, teams will use knowledge from their circuit,
electromagnetism, systems and signals, and
computer science courses to design and build
autonomous line tracking robots. These robots
must successfully navigate through a 60’x40’ area
track in the shortest time possible to win the
competition.
UCLA IEEE participated at UCSD’s ViaCar
and UCD’s Natcar competitions in May of last year.
Many teams finished the project, but only a few
competed. The best of our competing teams had
an unofficial score of 8 feet per second. Although
the program ended with impressive results, UCLA
IEEE is still molding and reshaping the structure of
the Natcar program. There are many
improvements we would like to institute, such as
obtaining a competition sized track. With more
financial support, Natcar can explore different,
advanced design options and higher quality parts.

Micromouse
Micromouse is another of the two UCLA IEEE capstone
design projects. Teams create a small autonomous robot to
traverse a 16x16 cell maze. This multifaceted project allows
members to learn and apply knowledge in microcontroller
programming, algorithm analysis, signal processing, feedback
control, and circuit design in the construction of a robot.
Programming is a challenge due to the infinite situations.
This past year, UCLA hosted the Official IEEE Region 6 Southern Area Micromouse competition
and participated in UCSD’s California Micromouse competition to compete with colleges from
California, Hawaii, and China. UCLA IEEE also held an internal competition for UCLA members only.
UCLA IEEE’s Micromouse program has
been anticipated to expand due to growing
interest after the UCLA competition. Due to this
expected expansion, we have appointed two
Micromouse co-leads, rather than a single lead.
The program will be shifting towards PCB
designs for a more professional and competitive
edge against opponents. Previous designs work,
but become outdated. Each year we are trying
to push for innovations for our members to
learn from old designs and improve them.

Open Project Space
Returning for its third year, the UCLA IEEE Open Project
Space (OPS) program continues to provide first and second year
engineering students with hands-on experience in electronics.
OPS is a yearlong program structured around a set of projects
and tutorials. These projects cover topics ranging from basic
circuits to CAD design of PCBs. The skills obtained from OPS are
intended to provide the skills allowing members to participate
in more intensive programs, such as Natcar and Micromouse.
In its prior two years, OPS received a huge student turnout during its application process.
However, due to financial and space constraints, we were only able to accept a fraction of the
applicants. Due to the program’s competitive entry rate, students understand the usefulness and
potential of OPS. However, project leaders also do their best to also recruit rejected applicants for
other opportunities.
Though OPS is popular due to its hands-on
appeal, the heart of the program is to spark a
passion of electronics in our members and inspire
them to pursue their own projects for which
UCLA IEEE can help sponsor. Because of this,
UCLA IEEE refunds the complete program cost for
those who finish the program. In the long run, we
hope to prepare our members for their
professional careers after UCLA by giving them
the expertise and knowledge necessary to excel.

IEEE Essentials
IEEE Essentials is a series of workshops held
throughout the school year where anyone can
participate and create fun and unique circuits.
These projects are aimed at teaching everyone,
engineers and non-engineers, about circuitry and
their applications. Last year, we held four
workshops that attracted a variety of participants.
Past projects included LED circuits, synthesizers and
a "test-your-reaction-speed" game. This year, we
hope to expand the program to include software

New Lab & Equipment
The demolition of UCLA Engineering I Building in
2010 was also our farewell to our first lab space. Since
then, we have been relocated a small lab in UCLA
Engineering IV. However, due to our immense growth,
we were able to secure a lab space in the newly
constructed Boelter Hall Creativity Center. UCLA IEEE will
be purchasing new equipment and furniture. With a new
lab space and with new equipment, our members will
enjoy the reward for the hard work that they have put in
for UCLA IEEE.

Events and Programs
S-PAVe
The Student-Professional Awareness Venture (S-PAVe) is one of UCLA IEEE's largest and most
highly anticipated events of the year. S-PAVe is based on six themes: working, career growth,
professional ethics and social responsibility, self-management, engineers and public policy, and the
importance of a professional society to the individual. Depending on the theme, the format of the
conference will vary. Students have the opportunity to attend skill-building workshops throughout the
day, meet representatives from industry, listen to high profile speakers, and more.
UCLA IEEE hosts S-PAVe
annually during the winter
quarter and aims for an
interdisciplinary theme. The
purpose of this is to allow all
engineering
students
to
participate. As companies branch
out into different fields such as
law, business and medicine, more
opportunities are available for
students after receiving their
bachelor’s in engineering. We
also extend an opportunity to
your company to network with
the future engineers from UCLA.

Ethics Competition
The Ethics Competition is another annual
event hosted by UCLA IEEE. The purpose of this
competition is to foster familiarity with the IEEE
Code of Ethics, to promote a model for discussion
by analyzing ethical questions, and to provide
experience in applying ethical concepts to
professional situations. Based on past case studies,
the competition usually leads to deep discussions
regarding the case and the interpretation of the
suggested solution of the problem.
Teams from other chapters like USC, UCSD and UCI are invited to participate in the competition.
The number of competitors from other colleges increases each year as we invite schools from CSULB
and CSULA. One hour is given to analyze a case study and another hour and a half is given to prepare a
twenty minute presentation with a question and answer session. Prize money is awarded to winning
teams at the end of the competition.

E-Week
Engineering Week Kid's Day is an annual
event organized by the engineering clubs of UCLA
to showcase fun engineering projects to
elementary school students. UCLA IEEE is proud to
inspire these young scientists by introducing them
to what electrical engineering students do. We
display and demonstrate our projects, such as
NATCAR and Micromouse, and we also give a brief
lecture on some technology that they have been
exposed to. Students also take part in a simple
project, using what they learned during
the lecture. For example, in previous
years, we described how a simple motor
works. For the workshop, we supplied
the necessary materials to put together
a small robot, and helped the students
assemble the robots so that they could
be taken home as souvenirs. We
participate in this event with hope that
it will inspire the next generation of
engineers.
Research Paper Reading Program
UCLA is a research oriented university and UCLA IEEE wants to take advantage of the
opportunities that can stem from this aspect. Although we have programs in professionalism and
projects, we also wish to touch upon academia. This program will be the first of its kind at UCLA IEEE.
The Research Paper Reading Program (official name
TBD) is designed to encourage members to be interested in
research papers. Members will meet twice per quarter to
discuss a paper in academia. We wish to bring in graduate
students or professors to teach the basics of writing a
research paper. From the experiences gathered here, we
believe our members will be ready to participate in student
paper competitions and follow their own research path.
11
Annual Banquet
The UCLA IEEE Student Recognition and
Alumni Banquet is established to annually celebrate
and recognize the many accomplishments and
successes that the UCLA IEEE chapter, its members,
the EE department at UCLA, and our sponsors have
made possible. We invite our sponsors to dine with
us as a token of our appreciation for their
contributions to UCLA IEEE. The banquet is also a
chance to introduce and instate the new officers for
the upcoming year to our supporters.
Officer Training
UCLA IEEE annually plans a retreat for the
purpose of leadership development and new officer
training. The training is usually hosted just before the
start of school in the fall and offers a chance to build
stronger officer relations, ensuring a smooth transition
to the new leadership for the organization. The training
consists of team-building exercises, bonding mixers, and
officer meetings to discuss plans for the coming school
year. UCLA IEEE believes that the training session is an
advantage which shows from all the team awards won.
