ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Negotiation case study
This module has been created by Allen Norris to provide practical insights into negotiating
a license agreement. It comprises an in depth workshop during which delegates will have
the opportunity to experience and resolve a realistic IP situation. Delegates will be split into
groups to facilitate interaction as actors of the negotiation and the session will be moderated
by experienced IP professionals William Bird of Patentive and Peter Burö of SKF.
Inge Basteleurs studied law, specializing in international commercial and corporate law, and managerial
economics at the universities of Leuven (Belgium) and
London (UCL, UK). She went into private practise (1995
- end 1999), working for the law firm of De Bandt, van
Hecke & Lagae (Linklaters) in Brussels and London as a
corporate, transactional solicitor. She then joined the
agricultural biotechnology company, Plant Genetic
Systems NV (now Bayer Bioscience NV) which included
extensive secondments to the US and Asia She there
had the opportunity to practice her licensing and
negotiating skills, in a series of patent litigation licenses and settlements, divestments and acquisitions (1999
– 2006). Inge joined UCB SA, a Belgian based multinational biopharma company, where she became responsible for the legal support to the emerging markets, to
Research and to Business Development which included
frequent travel to Asia and the Middle East. She later
became Secretary General of UCB SA. She recently
joined Biocartis NV as General Counsel (as representative of Calexin BVBA) – heading the legal and IP
department - and member of the Executive Committee.
She is also Managing Director at Biocartis NV.
William Bird graduated (MA) from Cambridge University with an honours degree in natural sciences,
majoring in physics and is a chartered electrical and
electronics engineer. He has worked as an engineer
and manager in process and product development,
project management and marketing in multinational
companies from which he has obtained a wide experience of the requirements and functioning of an industrial company. During the last twenty seven years he
has worked as both a corporate and private-practice
patent and trademark attorney in Germany and Bel-
gium. He has expertise in both Common Law and codifi ed legal systems, in technology transfer licensing
and in the setting up of spin-off companies. He is a
European, British and German patent and trademark
attorney and is a tutor at CEIPI, has lectured for
Pharmed, VUB Brussels ICAB Photonics, Vlerick School
of Management, University of Leuven among others.
He is an accredited tutor of LES.
Yves Botteman is a senior associate in the Brussels
office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP. He focuses his practice
on competition law. Yves has represented global businesses before the European Commission and national
competition authorities in relation to antitrust violations (cartels) and merger control. He also advises clients on cartels and competition issues arising from
settlement agreements, patent and know-how licensing, distribution, R&D and other specialization agreements between undertakings. He assists clients in
implementing antitrust compliance programs. Yves
Botteman’s practice has given him substantial exposure to industries as diverse as construction materials,
automotive, industrial gases, medical devices, carton
packaging and enterprise software. Yves is a regular
speaker on the competition law aspects of IP licensing.
Prior to joining Steptoe, he was a senior associate at a
aw firm in Brussels.
Peter Burö is manager patents SKF B.V and a European Patent Attorney with a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering as a base. In 1989, after four years
with the Swedish Army, he entered the IP world as an
Examiner at the European Patent Office in Rijswijk,
the Netherlands. After five years at the EPO it was
time for private practice in Gothenburg, Sweden with
Albihns and Cegumark for a total of nine years. He
then joined AB Volvo in 2003 to continue his IP career
in industry, where he among other things created a
proper IP function in the US. For the past nine years
his location has been at SKF B.V. in Nieuwegein, the
Netherlands where he created a full service patent
department and also created an IP function in China
and a full service patent department in India. Licensing is playing a more and more important role for SKF,
and Peter has thus been a LES Benelux member since
2008 and an auditor for the past two years. Peter will
become a board member of LES Benelux from 2015 on.
Dirk Groenewegen has a master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Technology of Delft and a PhD
in microbiology at the University of Hamburg. He
started as private consultant and managing director
of Intellectual Property Development BV in 1992 which
company is specialised in business development and
commercialisation of intellectual property. Dirk has a
broad experience in identifying useful innovations and
protection of intellectual property, negotiating and
concluding licence contracts on an international scale.
He had previous appointments as development manager with Sterling Winthrop Pharma in Germany, Unilever in the Netherlands and as senior consultant
license on mediation and brokerage with Berenschot
PTO in the Netherlands. At the moment Dirk is executive managing director of Glycostem Therapeutics BV,
a Netherlands based start-up company for stem cell
therapy.
Jürgen Hassa is an European Patent Attorney at UCB,
Brussels. Belgium. Following education in Germany
and France culminating in a PhD in organic chemistry

This module has been created for a more detailed basic insight into the construction of a license agreement.
It comprises an in depth workshop exploring the anatomy of a license agreement, section by section, and providing practical advice on how to draft a successful agreement. Delegates will be split into two groups to facilitate
interaction. Each group will be coached by experienced transactional lawyers, namely Inge Basteleurs (Calexin),
Jürgen Hassa (UCB), Pieter Wyckmans (Quinz) and Jurriaan Jansen (Freshfields).

obtained in December 1993, Dr Hassa joined the private practice of E. Blum & Co. Patentanwälte VSP
(Zurich, Switzerland) with focus on chemistry related
inventions. In 1999 Jürgen Hassa qualified as European
Patent Attorney and moved to Serono International
S.A.(Geneva; Switzerland) where he rose to Director,
Corporate IP Department; head of group organic chemistry; pharmaceutical formulations. Since January
2006 Jürgen Hassa has been with UCB Pharma S.A.
(Brussels; Belgium) as Associate General Patent Counsel, Corporate IP Department. In addition to numerous
presentations at conferences Jürgen Hassa has since
2001 been a co-tutor in the preparatory course for the
EQE (PatSkills) headed by Brian CRONIN in Geneva and
from 2002-5 was a CEIPI Tutor for Patent Law at the
EPFL Lausanne.
Jurriaan Jansen joined the Amsterdam office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as an associate in 2006. Jurriaan works in the Amsterdam IP/IT practice and
focuses on licensing of IP rights (including software),
data protection, outsourcing, IP/IT transactional work
(including transitional services agreements), distribution and agency agreements, e-commerce, and strategic copyright and trademark issues (transactional and
contentious). Jurriaan is a member of LES Benelux, the
Dutch Association for Copyright (Vereniging voor
Auteursrecht) and BMM and regularly teaches and lectures on licensing and data protection. Jurriaan speaks
Dutch, English and German.
Frank Landolt is a Dutch (1994) and European (1995)
patent attorney and a licensing lawyer. After studying
chemistry (M.Sc., 1990) and law (M.Sc., 1992) at Leiden
University, he worked for almost ten years at the pri-
vate practice firms of Polak and Charlouis (now EP&C)
and Nederlandsch Octrooibureau in the Netherlands,
where his clients included major pharmaceutical companies as well as biotech firms and research institutions. Prior to joining Ablynx as IP and legal counsel in
2004, he worked for 4 years as director of IP and legal
counsel at Devgen N.V. Frank is a member of EPI, the
Dutch Association of Patent Attorneys, LES and
L’institut des Juristes d’Entreprise, and holds an M.Sc.
in business law from the University of Antwerp (2006)
and and board member of LES Benelux.
Wouter Pors is head of the IP group of Bird & Bird in
The Hague. Before studying law, he studied architecture and building construction for several years. After
having done research at the Tilburg University Law
Faculty from 1986 until 1989, he was admitted to the
bar in 1989, specializing in IP. His main focus is on
patent litigation, which allows for a blend of legal and
technological innovations. He handles a wide range of
patent disputes, varying from mechanical issues
through software and business method patents to biotech disputes. Wouter has represented major electronics, biotech and pharmaceutical companies in international patent litigation. In addition, Wouter is also
involved in quite a lot of trade mark and copyright litigation. He is also a Dutch Supreme Court litigator and
has handled cases before Benelux Court of Justice.
Bruno Vandermeulen is a Belgian IP litigation lawyer, practicing intellectual property law in Brussels
since 1990. Bruno is a partner and head of the intellectual property department of the Brussels officeof Bird
& Bird. Bruno graduated from the Catholic University
of Louvain in 1988 and holds a Master of Laws degree
(LL.M) from the University of Georgia. Bruno has experience in all types of intellectual property litigation
and has obtained various published case law decisions
in patents, trade marks, design right and copyright.
Bruno has acquired unique experience in the Belgian
cross-border patent litigation disputes and has published extensively about this subject. Bruno focuses his
practice on drafting and egotiation license agreements, conducting intellectual property due diligences,
litigating patents and trade marks, and advising clients on cross-border litigation strategies in Belgium
and Europe. Bruno is past President and Honorary
Member of LES Benelux. Bruno is also a member of the
Belgian AIPPI and the Belgian Group of the International League of Competition Law (LIDC). Bruno is an arbitrator with the Belgian domain name dispute resolution center Cepani. He is also a member of the editorial
board with the Belgian legal journal “Intellectuele
rechten/Droits Intellectuels” (IRDI).
Pieter Wyckmans is a member of the Brussels Bar
and co-founder of the recently incorporated law firm
QUINZ. He combines years of experience as an M&A
lawyer, with years of experience as in-house counsel of
multinationals active within the pharmaceutical and
chemical industry. His practice focuses on advising clients on national and international transactions (acquisitions, divestitures and reorganizations) and the
drafting and negotiation of manufacturing contracts,
supply chain contracts, licensing contracts and R&D
(consortium) agreements, in particular within the Life
Science industry.
