Nearly 25 years after “Der Wende” Berlin has evolved into a creative
metropolis with an attraction to artists from all over the world. Often
this is also their residence.
Proudly we present two young and promising artists from Berlin,
each with its own world. They are both brought to the attention of
museums and their curators.
Earlier this year the artworks of Benyamin Reich were showed at the
exhibition ‘ the art of believing ‘ compiled by Maarten Spruyt, working
for the Rijksmuseum. Georg Weise had a retrospective at the beginning of this year at the Museum Junge Kunst, Frankfurt an der Oder.
For the exhibition ‘ Oh boy ... One city, two worlds ‘ they both show
something of the world in which they live, which has shaped them
and still inspires them.
Georg Weise (Berlin, 1973) grew up in Mecklenburg
and works as a professional artist in Berlin since 1991.
From 1998-2003 he studied at the Kunsthochschule
Berlin-Weißensee. In his paintings and sculptures
Georg Weise shows romantic performances by teenage
boys, modest but also graceful, or in German described
as ‘Anmut ’.
The sense of irony with which these works are made by
using old paintings, frames and sometimes structures
of walls, goes both ways. He focuses not only on masterfully reuse of old paintings – sometimes processed
in a way that would not be able to impersonate an
artist like Banksy – but also donates satisfaction to the
artist: adding a layer of self reflection and intellectual
distance.
Benyamin Reich (Jerusalem 1976) studied at the Ecole
des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Bezalel Academy of Art
and Design in Jerusalem. He grew up in an ultra Orthodox Jewish family. During his youth he visited religious
schools and yeshivas until he left home at a young age
to find his way in a world that seemed at odds with
his homosexuality. In his photographic work he shows
the tension between art and religion, perception and
memory but also the contrast between sensuality and
the strict formality of the orthodox Jewish religion.
