Two new books were released at the Congrès mondial acadien 2014!
Acadie Then and Now: A People’s History and the French version
L'Acadie hier et aujourd'hui: L'histoire d'un peuple by Mary
Broussard Perrin, Phil Comeau and me were both released on August
18, 2014, on Louisiana Day at the Congrès mondial acadien 2014, in
Grand Falls, New Brunswick.
This collection includes 65 articles on the Acadians and Cajuns living
today in the American states of Louisiana, Texas, and Maine; in the
Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward
Island, Newfoundland and Quebec; and in the French regions of
Poitou, Nantes, Belle-Ile-en-Mer, and St-Pierre et Miquelon. This
book takes an international perspective which provides the readers
with new insights on the past, the present, and the future of the
Acadian descendants from all of the Acadies of the world.

The Judge Allen M. Babineaux International Civil Law Symposium will be held on
November 20, 2014 at The Historic New Orleans Collection, 410 Chartres Street, New
Orleans, LA. Four CLE credits and ethics will be provided. The event will celebrate the
legacy of Brown v. Board of Education and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Elected New Brunswick Premier: Acadian Brian Gallant The New Brunswick Canada
elections were held on Monday, September 22, and 32 year old Liberal chief Brian
Gallant was elected as the new Premier, with a majority government. Of the 27 elected
politicians in his Liberal caucus, two thirds are Acadians. Of the 17 elected Acadians,
only one politician is from the Progressive Conservative party. Premier Gallant will
choose his Ministers shortly.


The community is invited to join the Bayou Vermilion District’s Vermilionville for their
free monthly cultural film series, Les Vues, held the last Monday of the month (except for
holidays) at 6:30 p.m. in their Performance Center. The free film series is curated by
filmmakers and enthusiasts, mostly from around the state. The films will center around
the curator’s interest and can range from features, documentaries, student film, shorts,
animation, etc. Following the screenings will be an open discussion between the audience
and the curator about the movie and how it applies on a local level. The September 29th
screening will be curated by Ms. Constance Milton, who will be showing the film
“Howard Citizen, the Man and the Music He Loves”. Admission to the film series is free,
but a suggested $5 donation will go towards screening and curating costs. Refreshments

Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne announced a new partnership between the Louisiana Book
Festival and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Along with major funding
support for the 2014 festival, the LEH will produce this year's festival program, which
features an original painting by the late artist George Rodrigue, a longtime supporter of
the Louisiana Book Festival. The 2014 Louisiana Book Festival takes place Saturday,
Nov. 1 at Capitol Park in Baton Rouge. Featured writers include James Carville and Mary
Matalin, Rick Bragg, Jill McCorkle, Michael Pitre and Zachary Richard. The day's events
include book-related activities for children and teens, as well as poetry readings led by
Louisiana Poet Laureate Ava Leavell Haymon, and a ceremony to recognize 2014
Louisiana Writer Award recipient Darrell Bourque. We will be selling Acadie Then and
Now: A People’s History at the table for UL Center for Louisiana Studies. For more

October 3, 2014 marked the 50th Anniversary of Hurricane Hilda that claimed the lives
of eight Erath men. Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Erath 4th of July
Association commemorated the sacrifice of these men on Sunday, October 5, 2014. The
victims included: Scotty Bernard, Joseph Camile "Joe" Brown, Otto "Cowboy" Bourque,
Vernice Broussard, Duffy Broussard, Felix Dubois, Clifton J. Dugas, Eutis "Noo"
Menard. Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Erath held a Mass of Remembrance
for the eight victims of the Erath Water Tower Collapse during Hurricane Hilda. The
Mass was held at 11:00 AM at the church located at 700 South Broadway Street. After
the Mass, a recently-completed documentary detailing the tragic event will be shown.
The documentary was produced by Erath Historians Robert B. Vincent and Stacy Bodin.

Bill Decker wrote this story in the Daily Advertiser (October 5, 2014): “Robert Vincent,
an Erath attorney, is 36, too young to remember the day Hurricane Hilda sent a water
tower crashing down on eight men who were monitoring the storm at the town hall. But
he was interest in history. And the town’s unofficial historian, Junior Bourgeois, was a
backdoor neighbor…That lifelong interest in history led Vincent to team up with teacher
Stacy Bodin to make a documentary, “In the Wake of Tragedy,” about the water tower
collapse, which happened 50 years ago Oct. 3…”


An article by Kris Wartelle was featured in The Daily Advertiser “When babies are born
at Lafayette General Medical Center, the standard Brahms “Lullaby” plays. Which is
nice, but not exactly unique. That’s why the Lafayette General Foundation and Louisiana
Folk Roots paired up to create something that better reflects the welcoming nature of
Acadiana. “Je M’endors” is a new CD of Cajun and Creole lullabies that will soon be
playing for newborns as they being their lives at Lafayette General. Featuring songs
performed by local Cajun and Creole musicians, Curley Taylor, Ann Savoy and Zachary
Richard.”


Legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte was to live in New Orleans after his exile.
France’s self-proclaimed emperor never made it to Louisiana, but his physician,
Francesco Antommarchi, did and brought with him one of our bronze death masks he
crafted from the face of the deceased Napoleon. That mask left New Orleans for the first
time since 1909, arriving in Baton Rouge to stand as a centerpiece in the Capitol Parik
Museum’s upcoming exhibit, “Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn.” The exhibit at
the Capitol Park Museum, which is part of the Louisiana State Museum system, is a
precursor to the State Museum’s “Dirty Shirts to Buccaneers: The Battle of New Orleans
in American Culture” show on Jan. 11 at the Cabildo. “And Napoleon’s death mask is
the segue between the Baton Rouge exhibit and the New Orleans show,” said Mark
Tullos, director of the Louisiana State Museum.

Dinner with Degas: The next Dinner with Degas, a recreation of the Creole hospitality of
Edgar Degas when he lived in this home with his New Orleans family, the Mussons, has
been scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, 2014, beginning at 6:30 pm. The featured chef
will be Chef Jacob Cureton, a favorite at the dinners. Chef Cureton has planned his menu
as his interpretation of recipes from Lafcadio Hearn's Creole Cookbook (published in
1885).

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the dance hall of
Vermilionville where we will gather to honor and celebrate Kirby Jambon before he
leaves for Paris shortly after to be presented the Henri de Regnier Award for his latest
book of poetry, an award presented by none other than L'Académie Française. This is
the first time ever that a French Louisiana writer has been chosen to receive this
prestigious award. This is a big honor not only for Kirby, but for all of us and it's his
wish to have you share in his joy. Our "Cajun Shakespeare" is a magnificent presence
both on stage and in the immersion classroom. Let's show him how proud we are of
him. On the evening of Nov. 18, please join fellow Cajuns in tasting good food, good
wine, and a personal poetry reading by Kirby from his book Petites Communions.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, LA, recently held an event
“Celebrating the Art and Soul of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.” The event was
presented by: Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, The Foundation for Historical
Louisiana and Mid City Redevelopment Alliance.

The community is invited to let the good times flow on Sunday, October 19 for the
Bayou Vermilion District’s 3rd annual Bayou Vermilion Festival & Boat Parade at
Vermilionville. The Bayou Vermilion Festival & Boat Parade is a celebration of and on
the Bayou Vermilion that aims to increase awareness of the river as a viable source of
recreation for Lafayette Parish and also serves as a fundraiser for the Bayou Vermilion
District’s efforts along the Vermilion. The Festival will kick off at 10 a.m. with a display
of antique putt-putt boats and engines and a mis-à-jour on Charles Richard’s upcoming
film In the Mind of the Maker, complete with a screening of the film trailer and a
discussion with the director and film subjects. The day will continue with a State of the
River Panel discussion, film screenings, cooking demonstrations and boat making
demonstrations. There will also be a kid’s corner with crafts and activities such as cork
boats, fish rubbings, homemade sidewalk chalk, pinwheels, toss-across game and more.
We will also be offering guided tours of Bayou Vermilion District’s rain garden and
pervious pavement, Bayou Vermilion boat tours, and a performance by Soul Creole from
1 – 4 p.m. Admission to the Festival will be $5, but those registered to participate in the
boat parade get in free with their $10 donation.

In conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, The Historic New Orleans
Collection is releasing a new book chronicling the history of an independent troop of
cavalrymen from New Orleans. The thoroughly researched Civil War regimental history,
A Fine Body of Men: The Orleans Light Horse, Louisiana Cavalry, 1861–1865, by
Donald Peter Moriarty II, invites readers to experience the major campaigns of the Civil

Festivals Acadiens et Créoles celebrates 40 years this week. But the word “Creole” has
only been in the festival’s name for the past seven years. Since its birth as the Tribut to
Cajun Music in 1974 at Blackham Coliseum, the festival has showcased black Creole
artists. Opelousas native Clifton Chenier, who was already touring the world as the King
of Zydeco, played the first festival, along with Bois Sec Ardoin and his family with
fiddler Canray Fontenot.


A regional tourism town hall meeting hosted by Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne will be held Oct.
15 in Lafayette and local residents are invited. The meeting will be from 9 to 11 a.m. in
Vermilionville, located at 300 Fisher Road in Lafayette. The meeting will focus on the
needs of residents for all of Southwest Louisiana, including St. Landry, Acadia,
Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, Pointe Coupee, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes.
