Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again – Understanding and Responding to Children with Attachment Difficulties.
Presented by Judy Ribaudo, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.
Young children raised in abusive or neglectful homes, or in orphanages, have considerably different needs than children raised in stable families.
When foster and adoptive families, educators or therapists are unfamiliar with the impact of neglect or abuse on child development, they run the risk of
further traumatizing children by not adequately addressing their tremendous needs. This workshop will examine the impact of abuse and severe
neglect and suggest a paradigm to increase a childʼs ability to use primary caregivers as a safe base.

Understanding the Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Adult Health and Well-being
Presented by Michael Foley, Executive Director of the Childrenʼs Trust Fund and Sarah Davis, Senior Program Development
Coordinator, at Childrenʼs Trust Fund of Michigan.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study has made it increasingly clear that abuse, neglect, and other forms of family dysfunction in childhood
can have a lasting impact on adult health and well-being. This session will describe the ACE research findings and current replication of the ACE study
in Michigan, plus strategies for using ACE data as a tool for education and advocacy. Implications to daily practice with children and families as well
as strategies to prevent or mitigate ACEs will also be briefly discussed.

Words Matter: Messaging, Engagement, and the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect
Presented by Ben Tanzer, Prevent Child Abuse America, in the Library Building Conference 1 and 2
The field of prevention has spent many years talking about “fixing families.” We are now looking to change the conversation to one focused on healthy
child development and supporting communities. We are also asking new questions as well. How do people think about prevention, assuming they
think about it at all? And how should we talk to them about prevention? This workshop will look to answer these questions and highlight the key
elements of this new conversation by drawing on research and examples that Prevent Child Abuse America has been working on for the last several
years around communications, framing and messaging.
Get Your Motor Running
Presented by Sharron Krull, of Play Power, in the Student Center 3 and 4
Using upbeat music, inexpensive equipment and homemade play props, attendees will “learn by playing” as they participate in moderate to vigorous
physical activity. Teachers will discover how to create an environment, situations, challenges, and activities that allow children to develop physical skills
and realize their potential for movement. And, physically active children have greater chances of being healthy for a lifetime!
“What to Do When You Suspect a Disability”
Presented by Nicole Lindwall, Early On Coordinator and Katie Monroe, Char-Em ISD School Psychologist
Parents and educators are often hesitant to make a referral for special education services as they are unsure about the process and eligibility
guidelines. This session will take participants through the referral process for children ages 0-3 (Early On) and 3-6 (Early Childhood Special
Education) as well as some general guidelines for who may be eligible.
The Importance of Play
Presented by Rachel Arndt, Curriculum Coordinator and Trainer at Northern Michigan Community Child Development Center.
Rachelʼs family was chosen as a finalist in Americaʼs Most Playful Family Contest in April 2014. She is a strong play advocate and will inspire you to
get out and play! Children learn and make meaning through meaningful interactions in various types of play. Learn how to recognize, support, and
maximize childrenʼs learning through play.
