@Reddam Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 14 Issue 28 Friday 10th October 2014 IN THIS ISSUE: Theatre Sports Sports Fixtures Music Showing Dates Dear Parent/Caregivers, What magnificent weather we enjoyed for the holidays. Summer is well and truly here and with it the lifting of everyone’s spirits. Welcome back to the final term of 2014. There have been a number of wonderful student achievements during these holidays that are noteworthy: Sam Newton is back from the Youth World Cup where he ended up as one of the top 45 climbers in the world. The Australian Team did well; getting 6 climbers through to the semi-finals. He has been invited to compete in the Oceania Boulder competition in the Blue Mountains in October. Miles Davis’s NSW State hockey team is doing extremely well, sitting top of the ladder. They have had 8 wins from 8 games so far with an amazing 51 goals for and only 1 against. Their tournament in Adelaide finishes with matches against Victoria and Queensland. Should they win those, they will be National Champions for the second year running. Marley Beeson represented NSW Metro at the Football (soccer) National Championships at Coffs Harbour. The team played exceptionally well and ended up as U13 National Champions. The Gold Duke of Edinburgh practice pack and paddle led by Rodney Freed was a four day, three night adventure. The six students started with paddling in the harbour before heading north to trek the Great North Walk. The students loved being out in the bush and the positive feedback will hopefully see greater numbers get involved in the future. Ben Pasternak has hit the newspapers with the App that he has developed in collaboration with an American associate. The “Impossible Rush” has been marketed and during the holidays has been powering up the App Store charts and is now at #14 on the US App Store. It is also #2 on the Australian App Store today. He is very excited that finally his hard work is paying off. He has been approached by potential investors and journalists keen to cover the story. Congratulations Ben: hopefully this is the start of a wonderful and fulfilling journey. Keep your feet on the ground. They certainly did me proud and it was such a brilliant experience to witness.” So impressed were the Dance Company with the standard of our students, that they have offered to extend the workshop to Years 7 and 8 on Tuesday 21st October. Having a positive self-esteem is arguably the most important attribute a teenager can take with them into adulthood. With this in mind we enlisted the services of teen expert Marina Passalaris, Founder and Author of Beautiful Minds (www.beautifulminds.com.au) to run a workshop with the Middle School girls. Marina delivered a dynamic, interactive presentation to educate and empower our girls on self-esteem, positive self-talk, elimination of the internal bully and self-respect. The presentation to the boys by Troy Jones, parent, bestselling author, film- maker, philanthropist, TV commentator and full time innovator is the founder of the Real Men Project. Troy shared his life experiences to illustrate examples and develop conversations around body image, media portrayal, and domestic violence – and inspired the boys to consider what being a "real man" is actually all about. Next week the Year 11 Prize-Giving, Senior Executive Induction and Platinum programme take place on Wednesday evening 15th October in the Adelaide Hall. On Monday the HSC examinations begin and we wish the Year 12 Class of 2014 all the best, as they face the very last hurdle of their school careers. Good luck. Have a good week, Dave Pitcairn. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 14, Issue 28, Friday 10 th October 2014 Page 2 SPORTING FIXTURES 11th OCTOBER BASKETBALL Girls 10R Div 1 (Lee) V Tidas 10.20am Alexandria Basketball Stadium Saturday. 12R Div 2 (Marcel) V Flames 10.15am Alexandria Basketball Stadium Saturday. 14R Div 2 (Lee) V Rockets 2.15pm Marrickville Basketball Stadium Saturday. 14E Div 3 (Henry) V Divas 1.30pm Marrickville Basketball Stadium Saturday 16R Div 2 (Irena & Matt) V Wildcats 5.05pm Alexandria Basketball Stadium Friday. Last term saw the introduction of Juniors (Years 7-8) and Intermediate (Years 9-10) Theatre Sports at Reddam. We currently have around 25 Junior Theatre Sports players and 10 Intermediate players who meet each Friday for coaching sessions in the Drama and Dance rooms at Woollahra. They are coached by professional Theatre Sports Improvisers from Impro Australia. These students are very enthusiastic and on the 12th September the Juniors did their school houses proud in the first Reddam House Cup Theatre Sports Challenge at the Events Cinemas. We look forward to many more to come. If you are interested in joining the Junior or Intermediate Theatre Sports on Fridays between 3.00pm and 4.30pm please contact me at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there, Amanda Crompton. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 14, Issue 28, Friday 10 th October 2014 Page 4 @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 14, Issue 28, Friday 10 th October 2014 Page 5 @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 14, Issue 28, Friday 10 th October 2014 Page 6 @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 14, Issue 28, Friday 10 th October 2014 Page 7
