Nordestgaard Speciality - Dyslipedemia Chief Physician in Clinical Biochemistry at Copenhagen University Hospital, Denmark. Professor in Genetic Epidemiology at University of Copenhagen, Denmark In 1985 he graduated as a medical doctor from University of Copenhagen. Scientific education included 2 years with Professor Steen Stender at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, 2 years with Professor Donald Zilversmit at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and 2 years with Professor Barry Lewis at St. Thomas's Hospital in London, UK. In 1990 he was awarded Doctor of Medical Sciences by University of Copenhagen and in 1996 Specialist in Clinical Biochemistry by the Danish Board of Health. Clinical training included hyperlipidemia, gastroenterology, internal medicine, cardiology, and clinical biochemistry. Prof. Nordestgaard has for more than 25 years continued his interest in the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and has written extensively on these conditions in medical textbooks, original articles and in consensus statements. Over the past 20 years he has given numerous talks on how best to treat hyperlipidemia and how to diagnose and prevent atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Previously, he was Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, CO, USA and the Free University in Amsterdam, and president of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology. His main interests are pharmacological and interventional treatments of acute coronary syndromes and atrial fibrillation. Professor Verheugt has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, and has more than 14,000 citations. He is an editorial board member of European Heart Journal and an editorial adviser to Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, and Circulation. International Faculty Non Invasive Cardiology Jeroen Bax Speciality - Cardio Vascular Imaging His interest has always been in clinical cardiology (specifically by the application of non-invasive imaging techniques to improve diagnosis and prognosis in cardiovascular disease), including the clinical practice, science and education. Initially, he had the pleasure to be involved at the working group level by chairing the working group of Nuclear Cardiology and CT, co-organizing ETP courses at the Heart House (nuclear cardiology), and organizing an ESC subspecialty congress (ICNC – nuclear cardiology and CT). At a later stage, he was privileged to become part of the congress program committee (CPC) and FOCUS committee, followed by chairing the committee in 2007 and 2008. He also had the opportunity to work with different associations by serving on the scientific program committees of EAPCI and EHRA. Over the years, he had the honor to co-edit 2 books with the ESC, the most recent being the ESC textbook on cardiovascular imaging. In 2009 and 2010 he chaired the ESC press committee, and for the period of 2011 and 2012 and also chaired the ESC guidelines committee. Lars Rydén Speciality - Cardio Diabetes Professor Emeritus of Cardiology, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm Lars Rydén is Professor Emeritus of Cardiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. He is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. His research focuses on arrhythmias, cardiac pacing, heart failure and cardiovascular disease related to diabetes. Professor Rydén has published over 500 scientific papers in these fields, and is an honorary member of the Royal College of Physicians London, and several national cardiac societies. Professor Rydén was the president of the Swedish Cardiac Society 1986–1990, and chaired the scientific board of the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation 1995–2005. He was the president of European Society of Cardiology 1998–2000, and has served on the board of the World Heart Federation. He has chaired Alert (a system for identification and early assessment concerning new methods in health care) for the Swedish Council on Technology Assessment in Health Care since 2004. Professor Rydén has been appointed by the Irish and Luxemburg Ministries of Health to chair an expert committee providing background material for the creation of a Heart Health Plan for Europe, and has in this capacity collaborated with the European Society of Cardiology and the European Commission. Professor Rydén was also co-chair of the task force that prepared the recent ESC/EASD guidelines for diabetes, prediabetes and cardiovascular disease. Michael Marber Speciality - Stable Angina & Acute MI Professor of Cardiology, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist King's College London. Professor Michael Marber graduated from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1984 having intercalated a BSc Hons in Biophysics. After clinical training at the Brompton, St Peter's and St George's Hospitals he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellowship to undertake his PhD in Physiology with Derek Yellon and David Latchman at University College London. This Fellowship was extended to allow postdoctoral training with Dr Wolfgang Dillmann at University of California, San Diego. In 1996 he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas ' Hospitals and subsequently promoted to Professor of Cardiology at King's College London in 1999. International Faculty Diabetes Edwin Gale He is Emeritus Professor & works with Franco Bottazzo on the Barts-Windsor Family Study founded by Andrew Cudworth, led to the establishment of the population-based Barts-Oxford Study in 1985. This led to the first survival analysis of type 1 diabetes prediction. In 1997 I moved to Bristol with Polly Bingley, my closest collaborator, and many other members of the team. In collaboration with many other groups, my team helped to develop the current model used to predict future onset of diabetes in close relatives of an affected child. This led on to ENDIT (1994-2003), a multinational intervention trial. Another major interest is in the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes, and I played a prominent role in the early stages of the EURODIAB ACE network, which has greatly clarified trends in the epidemiology of childhood onset diabetes in Europe. Filip K. Knop Currently he is a physician and head of Diabetes Research Division at Gentofte Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and holds an associate professorship at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Also, he is finishing his clinical training to become a board certified endocrinologist. Prof Knop have more than 95 scientific peer reviewed publications (including 41 original articles, 32 reviews, 17 scientific letters/ commentaries and 4 case reports), 3 book chapters, 1 monograph and 105 international peer reviewed abstract publications (in connection with scientific presentations). Several feature articles in newspapers and society publications. Stefano Del Prato Stefano Del Prato is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the School of Medicine, University of Pisa, and Chief of the Section of Diabetes, University of Pisa, Italy. He also holds the post of Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Texas, San Antonio Health Science Center, Texas, USA. Professor Del Prato's research interests have always been concerned with diabetes and, in particular, the physiopathology and therapy of type 2 diabetes and the Insulin Resistance Syndrome. He has published over 200 articles in national and international journals and acts as referee for many journals. Furthermore, Professor Del Prato has served on the editorial boards for Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, Diabetes, Nutrition, and Metabolism, European Journal of Clinical Investigation, and ActaDiabetologica. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews, Journal of Endocrinology, and Diabéte et Metabolism. He is clinical cardiologist with a special interest in coronary artery disease, from prevention to non-invasive and invasive assessment and pharmacological and mechanical treatment. In the last 20 years I have performed in Rotterdam, Milan and London more than 4,000 coronary angioplasties, pioneering the use of techniques such as intravascular ultrasound, intracoronary Doppler, intracoronary pressure measurement, embolic protection, covered and drug eluting stents in complex lesions, recanalization of chronic total occlusion, alcohol ablation for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, carotid and renal stenting.
