COMMUNITY The Gardner News, Oct. 8, 2014 7 Second grade students at Spring Hill Elementary School learned a hands-on lesson about Native American dwellings, when the Johnson County Parks & Recreation rangers enlisted them to construct a tipi. Prior to the construction project, the students listened to the rangers talk about tipis, which were a preferred dwelling of the Native Americans who lived on the Great Plains. Not only did the students learn about the materials used and more about their nomadic way of life but the students spent time helping build a full-size tipi. The students will be doing additional studies related to Native Americans in class.
