Second grade students at
Spring Hill Elementary School
learned a hands-on lesson about
Native American dwellings,
when the Johnson County Parks
& Recreation rangers enlisted
them to construct a tipi.
Prior to the construction project,
the students listened to the
rangers talk about tipis, which
were a preferred dwelling of the
Native Americans who lived on
the Great Plains. Not only did
the students learn about the
materials used and more about
their nomadic way of life but the
students spent time helping
build a full-size tipi. The
students will be doing additional
studies related to Native
