When you’re connected to the internet, CrashPlan automatically backs up the files in your Home folder (some exceptions apply, like music and movies) and stores them encrypted on Reed’s servers. CUS will contact you if your computer hasn’t been backed up in a while. Those who prefer can use an external drive in addition to CrashPlan. Contact CUS if CrashPlan hasn’t been installed on your computer! tsg.reed.edu/crashplan Data Security If you work with confidential data, you must take special steps to keep the data safe and secure: 1. Identify the documents that contain confidential data on your computer 2. Securely delete these files when you are done with them 3. If you must keep confidential files, make sure they are encrypted when not in use 4. Keep devices like laptops and external drives physically secured. New Computer Labs In addition to student computer labs IRC 105, 107 and 109, the ETC now has classroom computer labs located on the second floor. ETC 205 and 208 are available for classroom discussion and labwork. You can reserve these rooms through Sarah Sharp in the Registrar’s Office. Microsoft’s Home Use Program (HUP) enables faculty to download a copy of Microsoft Office to install and use on a home computer, for a very small fee. You can use the software as long as you work at Reed, and as long as we maintain our site license for college-owned computers. Peer-to-peer (P2P) software is used to share or distribute files with others, such as music and movies. Although there are legitimate P2P uses, dozens of people are caught each year illegally sharing music and movies using software like BitTorrent and Kazaa. P2P software can degrade internet speeds and is a security risk on Reed’s network. Most P2P protocols are now blocked on campus. Faculty and staff with a legitimate academic need can request an exception. Managed Software Update is an app CIS uses to manage the software on your machine. These updates will usually run in the background, but occasionally you may see a message prompting you to log out and install. In the best interest of your machine and data, pease run the update as soon as is convenient. The Basics Instructional Techonology Getting Online Getting New Hardware and Software Reed provides wireless and wired access throughout campus. There are two wireless networks available at Reed: ReedXenia and Reed1x. ReedXenia is a network that is intended for visitors and guests. Reed1x is an encrypted network and is restricted to Reed community members. For increased security, we recommend you connect to the Reed1x network. To connect to Reed1x, select it from your list of available wireless networks. When prompted, enter your Kerberos username and password. Windows users will need to visit: tsg.reed.edu/win1x Although wireless is convenient, a wired connection will be more stable and provide faster downloads. After connecting to the wired network, launch a web browser and you will be redirected to our registration page. Choose the Reed Community Member option and enter your Kerberos username and password. Your Reed-owned computer comes with basic programs like Microsoft Office already installed. If you need specialized hardware or software, CUS will be happy to advise and assist you with setup. Hardware requests are solicited each year in March and approved items are deployed during the summer. AV Services Audio Visual Services provides sound and video equipment available for checkout with your Reed ID. AV Services are now a part of CUS and are located in the ETC.
