Cricu icut Cutting Guide Hand Crafted by Megan Gravener Cre Creative Director for Above Rubies Studio Welcome to the Above Rubies Studio Cricut Cutting Guide! This guide was specially designed for all Cricut™ users, regardless of the Cricut™ Machine you use, to help walk you through the paper (and more) cutting process. One thing that is absolutely critical to making the Cricut™ cut properly is to have the pressure, speed and depth of blade correct for the type of paper you are using. These little settings are what can make or break your Cricut™ experience. No one wants to ruin expensive paper by accidentally having the wrong settings in place and then the Cricut™ tearing up their paper! It's certainly happened to me enough and it's so frustrating, especially when I forget to check where my setting is before I switch my paper! I have created this exhaustive list including hundreds of different materials that you can cut with your Cricut™ Machine and what settings to use to get the best cuts possible. This guide is to aid you from ripping/tearing paper. Remember this is only a guide and does not guarantee against ever ripping/tearing your paper again, but it is a really great start. All of the materials listed have been tested in multiple cutting circumstances, sizes and shapes. You can also do “tester” cuts for your shapes, but we'll talk about that more later. Cricut Cutting Guide rev 1.0 ~ Copyright 2009 Above Rubies Studio ~ http://www.AboveRubiesStudio.com How to Use this Guide Let's start with a simple review of how this guide works. You will find all the papers and materials that are all listed in this Guide in alphabetical order. Along with that you will see the information just like in the example below. Here is a quick reference of what they mean: Shape Type: • • Basic Shapes (ie circles, letters, cards, envelopes, etc) Intricate Shapes (ie flourishes, shapes with thin lines, detailed cuts, etc) Size: • • >1” (shapes that are greater than 1 inch size) <1” (shapes that are less than 1 inch size) Blade Type: • • Regular (every machine comes with the regular, also called "standard", cutting blade) Deep Cut (sold separately from Cricut™, thicker and more durable blade) Blade Depth: • • Blade housing has an arrow on the front and numbers 1-6. You will need to do two things when considering the blade and the blade depth. One, make sure that the arrow on the housing is always facing completely forward and center. If this arrow is not centered, if may be the cause of uneven or torn cuts. Secondly, you simply twist the top of the housing to the right or left to have number 1 through the number 6 to select the blade depth setting. Speed: • Your Cricut™ has 5 speed settings: 1 or "Low" (being the slowest), 2, 3, 4 and 5 or "Max" (fastest setting) Pressure: • Aside from setting the blade depth you can also set the pressure that the machine will apply to the blade. 1 or "Low" (being the lightest), 2, 3, 4, 5 or "Max" (the hardest) Notes: There will be notes after several selections that will just give you a little more information regarding that paper/material type. This section will also include information on if you will need to use the multicut setting. Cricut Cutting Guide rev 1.0 ~ Copyright 2009 Above Rubies Studio ~ http://www.AboveRubiesStudio.com Real Dial Size I want to quickly do a reminder on the Real Dial Size function, because even if you have all the pressure and settings correct, size is something I can't help you with beyond these few tips. By default, your Cricut™ machine will cut characters in proportion to each other. However, if you want to “break” this proportion and get any character to cut at the literal dial size, press the Real Dial Size key. EXAMPLE: With the Size Dial set at 2", a lowercase “a” will actually cut out at approximately 1" to fit proportionately with any other cut letter. With Real Dial Size selected, that same “a” would cut at a full 2". REMEMBER THIS: The letter, phrase or shape is always measured from the lowest possible point to the highest possible point. Test Cuts Test cuts with either white copy paper (it is similar to many thin patterned paper) or on white card stock (similar to many thicker materials and card stocks) when you unsure of the intricacy or detail of the cut to see how it reacts to those papers first. It's also good to test sizes on. You can pick both up at Walmart/Target for less than $5 for a pack and it will “save” your designer papers for what you really want to use them for! It at least gives you a good idea in comparison to the papers listed in this guide. A general rule followed through this guide is that them more intricate the cut is that you are trying to make, the slower your speed. In the same instance the more basic and larger your shape the faster your cuts can be. Keep that in mind when setting your machine. Maintenance Tips I also wanted to give you a few maintenance tips for your Cricut™ and Cricut™ parts to help with your cutting process: Cutting blades will last you anywhere from 500 to 1500 cuts, depending on what kind of paper/cardstock you use. Therefore it is important to keep your blades fresh and sharp by replacing them when you notice the first rip or tear. (minding that you are on the right settings) Replacement blades are inexpensive and easy to change. Videos available at http://www.AboveRubiesStudio.com Cricut Cutting Guide rev 1.0 ~ Copyright 2009 Above Rubies Studio ~ http://www.AboveRubiesStudio.com The Cricut™ cutting mats are also every important to cuts that your machine make. Especially more intricate cuts. The firm stick your mat has the less your paper will slip and the easier the blade can navigate the paper on the mat for a smooth, clean cut. Mats generally last between 30 and 60 full-page cuts, depending on the size of the cuts and what kind of paper/cardstock you use. It is really good to have a few mats and to rotate them and the way you load them into the machine to extend the life of the mats. There are also 2 videos available at AboveRubiesStudio.com on reusing old Cricut™ mats to even further extend the life of your mats to save money! Using the Zig Two Way Glue Pens has been a favorite tip of mine. Recently I have discovered that Crafter's Companion has a wonderful set of products available at http://www.CustomCrops.com that I am in the process of working with, and it seems to be amazing at keeping your Cricut Mats fresh and sticky! There have also been issues in the past of the Cricut™ Mat being “too sticky” and it's ripping the paper when you remove it. Two things you can try are to stick down a sheet of computer printer paper and lift it several times to remove a little bit of the stick. But the best options are to either use a craft knife or the Cricut™ Spatula available at many craft stores and even Walmart to carefully lift and remove cut images. I also really enjoy my entire Cricut™ Tool kit, they are all designer for use with pulling images off the mat, cleaning up image edges and removing access pieces. They are all available at many craft stores. Grams per Square Meter (GSM) The last thing I want to talk about is GSM. GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter, a paper industry term that gives a good idea as to the thickness of a paper. This will also help you in selecting the right “settings” for your Cricut™ machine while cutting. Most places will give you a general idea of the GSM on their paper and if you can't find the paper listed in this spreadsheet, take a look at what the GSM is and then you can try to figure it out from there. Remember you can always try test cuts on scraps or the Walmart brands of paper to achieve your goal end results. • Generally speaking anything that has a GSM of 10-35 has tissue consistency. Therefore, in general, you would have blade depth set on 2, Speed on 1 – 2 and Pressure on 1 -2. • Lighter text weight would be around 35-70 GSM, and I would say your settings would be somewhere around blade depth of 3-4, Speed of 3 and Pressure of 3. • Medium weight paper is approximately 70-100 GSM, your general settings of blade depth is 4-5, Speed of 3-5 depending on intricacy, Pressure of 3-4, again also depending on intricacy. • Heavy text weight to a light cardstock 100-120 GSM, I believe in general this is what we most often use for Cricut Cutting Guide rev 1.0 ~ Copyright 2009 Above Rubies Studio ~ http://www.AboveRubiesStudio.com Scrapbooking (Many designer papers are in this category) so I overall use a blade depth of 5, Speed of 4-5 and Pressure of 4. This of course is pending a larger less intricate cut. • Regular Cardstock is approximately 120-150 GSM. This is where using blade depth of 5 is great and faster speeds and pressures are pretty easy to use. Again, minding the intricacy or size of the cut you are making. Remember use the alphabetical list below to find what settings work well with the paper you are trying to cut. I usually put my pressure lighter for intricate cuts and will add in the multicut function for a cleaner cut for smaller images. • Thick Cardstock 150-200 GSM is generally what is categorized as 60lb cardstock, blade depth usually requires to be on 6, speeds can generally be kept on 5 and pressure on 5 as well. Once in a while multi cut comes into play. Especially when doing cuts like I mentioned above for regular cardstock. • Heavy cardstock, and greater than 200 GSM is really generally really heavy cardstock. It falls in the 80lb. weight such as Stampin' Ups cardstock as well as many other cardstock companies. This is where using blade depth of 6 is great and fastest speeds and pressures and many times multi cut comes in handy Well I think that gives you a really great place to start for cutting with your Cricut™ machine. I am so glad you have chosen to download this very useful guide and hope that it will assist you for years to come!
