Student Success
Congratulations to Year 12 student Parvathi Subramaniam who has received two pieces of
good news over the holiday break. Not only has she been working very hard studying and
preparing for her upcoming HSC exams but she has also been working hard on her
application to become a World Vision Youth Ambassador. Parvathi is now through to the
final stage of the 2015 Youth Ambassador selection process having recently submitted a
great YouTube video submission. Her final interview will take place in front of a panel of
World Vision staff who will be asking a range of questions that will be centred on who she
is and why she would be a great Youth Ambassador. The panel interview will be broadly
looking at a range of capabilities such as communication, awareness of self and others,
innovation and conceptual capacity.Parvathi also has to tell the panel about a time when
she encountered injustice or poverty, what she learned through it and how it changed her.
At the same time Parvathi has received an early offer to study a Bachelor of Applied
Science (Occupational Therapy) at the University of Sydney. This is a great stress reliever
as she now knows that should she get the marks she needs she is guaranteed a place at uni
next year. Congratulations for all the hard work Parvathi.
HSC Exams
The HSC exams start on Monday morning with the first exam being English. We expect
our Year 12 students have spent their time wisely over the last few weeks in preparing as
best they can for the month long period. During the break a large number of teachers were
here at the school offering extra revision sessions with the students and it was pleasing to
see so many avail themselves of the opportunity. This shows they are determined to
continue working towards success and it will have helped them feel more confident as the
first exam approaches. My thanks to all those teachers who gave up part of their holidays
to work with our students.
Staff Changes
At the start of this week we welcomed Ms Tamara Cole who was appointed as our
Agriculture teacher replacing Mr Newton. Ms Cole comes from a farming family and has
experience handling animals and running all aspects of farm life. This will be a

tremendous thing for our students who will once again have access to authentic practices.
We welcome Ms Cole to a caring and respectful community and look forward to her
settling in very soon and feeling one of the family.
At the end of last term our librarian, Ms Crouch, was offered a position at Figtree High
School which she will take up at the start of week 6 this term. Ms Crouch will be on leave
before then but will return in week 5 to conclude the Year 8 – 10 Gifted and Talented
Program she has been coordinating. We know this relocation will see her move much
closer to home and with less travel involved, we wish her all the very best and hope she
too settles quickly and easily into her new school.
Year 12 2015
As year 11 leave their preliminary year behind them and they move into term 4 they
experience so many changes and shifts in demands that we have decided that our In Focus
evening, which traditionally was held at the start of the new calendar year, should be
brought forward into term 4 so that parents and students receive important advice about
how to progress through this important school year. We are about to finalise the date on
the calendar and will be informing parents as soon as possible about this new date.
Australian Business Week
Year 11 have returned from their holidays and gone straight in to the challenging, fun,
exciting, educational, creative and technical Australian Business Week program. Each
year I tell them that it will be the best experience of their school lives and so far I haven’t
been proved wrong. This year the students got very quickly into running their simulated
business and designing their new product. They had a range of guest speakers who
delivered workshops on the importance of financial management, marketing, operations
and HR. But this is not a Business Studies activity! It is more about team work, creativity,
communication, problem-solving, decision making, critical thinking and collaboration.
The skills that our students develop during this week long challenge will be hugely
beneficial as they approach the final year of study. There will be a full report next week
but I would like to thank Ms Dalton for her outstanding organisation and thank also the
staff who accepted the role of mentor for their groups throughout the week.
Congratulations to all of the students for their engagement, commitment and enthusiasm
for learning this week.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Year 12
I would like to wish all Year 12 students every success in their current HSC examinations. This is the
time that hard work, commitment and sustained effort will deliver the academic success you have
strived for over the last 2 years. Our current cohort of students have proven to be excellent
ambassadors and community members and the teachers at MFHS are here to support them
throughout the examination period. HSC exams commence on Monday 13 October and conclude on
Tuesday 4 November.
Uniform
The first week of term 4 has brought with it changing temperatures, truly representative of the
Spring season. At Model Farms High School, the expectation for student uniform does not change
on such days. All students are to present to school in the correct uniform, including socks and
shoes. If in unforseen circumstances, this is not possible, a note from the parent must be written
and submitted by the student to a Head Teacher prior to the commencement of the school day.
Please be vigilant in supporting the school and P and C with the wearing of the school and sports
uniform. Canvas shoes (rather than leather), non-white socks and socks below the ankles are not
part of the school uniform. On Wednesday (Sport), students are to wear supportive athletic shoes.
The uniform policy is clearly stated inside each student’s diary as well as on the Model Farms High
website.
Year 10
I trust that all Year 10 students gained valuable insight into the working world, through their Work
Experience at the end of term 3. I have had numerous conversations with students who informed
me that the week was fun, hard work, tiring and provided opportunities to learn new skills. This
week will hopefully provide some students with a direction of possible careers, or in the very least,
be able to remove a job as a possible career. I wish each year student every success in the
forthcoming term, especially in their final examinations later in the term.
Student Success
Congratulations to Danika Hamstead of Year 12, who recently received notification that she has
been given a call back for both her Major Dance Performance and Core Performance for Dance. This
is outstanding on its own merit, however, Danika had a major shoulder injury earlier in the year,
requiring her to change both of her dances, from the beginning, due to the lack of mobility in her
shoulder.
Danika has proven throughout the year to be highly resilient, very talented and above all, to be a
wonderful person and ambassador for the school. Understandably, her family is incredibly proud of
her achievement, as is the school. Well done Danika!
Positive Feedback
On Thursday, whilst attending the afternoon buses, Mrs Manson was approached by the driver of
Bus 2597. The driver explained that he had been in his job for over 20 years and found the students
at Model Farms to be the most polite, well behaved and respectful he has come across. He was

thrilled that so many, when exiting at a stop, took the time to say thank you to him. What a
fantastic positive affirmation for our students!


The Atlantic Ocean is saltier than the Pacific Ocean. (What is the Southern Ocean like?)

It's still possible to see the division between East and West Germany due to different light

Year 9 Dance – Safe Dance Booklets are now due.
Year 11 Dance – You are now Year 12! And the real work begins.
As the warmer weather approaches, it is vital that we remember to keep up
the fluids, especially when we are involved in physical activities.
Dance increases heat production by muscles. Cooling the body depends on
evaporation of sweat from the skin. Sweat loses during a dance class can be
up to 2 litres per hour. This fluid loss can result in dehydration which can
impair performance and mental function such as the ability to concentrate on
technique, alignment and safe dance practises efficiently. A cup (250 ml) of
water every 15 minutes is recommended. Bring a bottle of water to each dance
class. Our body’s thirst mechanism does not always keep up with our need for
fluid so make sure you drink regularly. After class, you should continue to
increase fluid intake for a couple of hours. Avoid carbonated drinks and juices.
A simple way to check hydration is your urine colour:
clear to light = good hydration,
yellow to dark can mean you need more hydration.

Year 11 Noticeboard
A Message from the Year Advisor Mr. Montgomery
Gianna Edirimanne of Year 11 has kindly volunteered her time to working with the Saint
Vincent de Paul Society. She is an inspirational and hard-working student and is
congratulated for her success with the program. Well done, Gianna.
The SPARK Program
Written by Gianna Edirimanne
This year I decided to do my own independent research into volunteering opportunities in
my community. I came across a program called SPARK by the Saint Vincent de Paul
Society, which is an after school homework and activities club for refugee children in Kindy
to Year 6. It aims to help children develop confidence in themselves as they are supported
to understand and complete their homework, enjoy recreational activities and develop
relationships with their peers.
An important element of this program is raising community awareness about refugees and
new members of the school community. This promotes understanding, acceptance and
mutual appreciation within the local community.
I was immediately inspired by the program's goals and focus and decided to apply as a
volunteer. Taking part has been such a humbling and rewarding experience, I have watched
my peer student develop a sense of independence and confidence when completing his
assigned tasks. The SPARK program has a strong network of volunteers and leaders who
were welcoming from my first day of volunteering. Since then, I have made many friends
and it is motivating to have the opportunity to work with like-minded people.
I encourage students at Model Farms High School to find volunteering opportunities in our
local community and to not be scared to give up some of your time to take part. You can
take part in daily events or long term volunteering, there is something to suit everyone. I
cannot emphasise how rewarding volunteering is no matter how small the deed.

Year 11 Yearly Drama Examination
Well done to our Year 11 Drama students
who successfully presented their Yearly
Group Performance Practical Examination
at the end of Term 3. They were
entertaining, engaging and demonstrated
moments of flair and originality. I look
forward to seeing what this troupe of
young actors brings to the stage as they
embark on their HSC year. Great work

This week’s news
Welcome back to a very busy fourth term. The dates for the Yearly exams for Years 7 to 10 are
below. All students should be revising their work from in their home study time in preparation for
these very important examinations.
We would also like to thank the Mathematics teachers who came
into school during the holidays to give valuable last minute
coaching to their Year 12 students.
Yearly Examinations for Years 7, 8, 9 & 10:
Year 9 will be the first year group to complete their Yearly Examinations. It will be done in their
double period of Mathematics, Friday 17th October (Week 2 Term 4). The Year 9 Yearly examination
will consist of a short non-calculator section, followed by the longer calculator paper. Please make
sure that your Year 9 student has a copy of the examination outline. They were given out in class
during Week 10 of Term 3.
Please make sure that your student brings their own mathematics equipment (pens, pencils,
calculators, rulers, geometry sets) for their Yearly Examinations. Equipment MUST NOT be shared
in the exams. Please note that Year 7 is the only year group that will not be using calculators for
their examinations.
The timetable for the Mathematics Yearly Examinations is as follows:

Calculators:
Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the
uniform shop for $35. Different brands of scientific calculators work differently and it is important
that everyone in a class has the same calculator. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital
for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different
functions.
Free Maths Tuition:
Free Maths tuition is provided every Thursday afternoon after school
from 3pm to 4pm. Years 7 to 10 are in room 8-07 and Years 11 and 12
in 8-06. It is fully supervised by the Mathematics Faculty.
Fun with Maths
The Year 10 Yearly Examination is similar in style to the School
Certificate examination. The Year 10 Yearly Examination will test student knowledge from both the
Stage 4 and Stage 5 courses. Here is the link to the online quizzes that will help Year 10 students
preparing for this important exam that will be held in week 4 term 4.
