SCHUBERT 05:00 p.m. 11 EXCURSION SATURDAY, 11th OCT. 2014 BRENNER BASE TUNNEL General The 64-km long Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs between Innsbruck/Tulfes and Fortezza. It is a closely woven tunnel system consisting of main tubes, an exploratory tunnel, access and connecting tunnels. Were one to lay the individual tunnels end to end, the entire length would be 230 km. Thirtyone km have been excavated and a further forty-four are in the tender and awards phase at present, for a total amount of over 800 million Euro. In Austria, the Ampass and Ahrental access tunnels, the exploratory tunnel section from Innsbruck to Ahrental as well as the two logistics tunnels (Padaster and Saxen) at Steinach am Brenner have been completed. Excavation has been under way since December of 2013 on the Wolf access tunnel (Wolf 2 construction site). Wolf 2 Construction Site The Wolf access tunnel and the underground tunnel in the Padaster valley are being built starting from this site (see illustration). The access tunnel leads 4 km downwards to the level of the two main tunnel tubes. The excavation cross section is 110 m². On average six volleys are blown every day, meaning that the tunnel grows by 10 metres per day. The underground tunnel in the Padaster valley is being built for the re-routing of the Padaster brook. This is a pre-condition for filling the Padaster valley with the excavated spoil from the tunnel. 12 Preliminary schedule 09:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. 01:00 p.m. 02:00 p.m. 04:00 p.m. Departure at the Salzburg Congress Center by bus Arrival at Steinach am Brenner followed by a short introduction Site visit: tunnel excavation, repository Padastertal, preparation of tunnel excavation material, chapel St. Wendelin Lunch at the site office Wolf Return to Salzburg Expected arrival at the Salzburg Congress Center 13 ACCOMPANYING PERSONS PROGRAM THURSDAY, 09th OCT. 2014 GROSSGMAIN OPEN AIR MUSEUM STIEGLS BREWERY We are going to Großgmain, a 700 years old settlement in a rural agriculture setting, located close to the regional capital of Salzburg and scattered around the foothills of the impressive Untersberg mountain. There we will visit one of the oldest Virgin Mary Pilgrimage Churches. Over the centuries countless pilgrims have journeyed to this church with its „Beautiful Madonna” dating from around 1400. It is reported to have miraculous powers. Then we will discover the famous Salzburg Open Air Museum - a site of over 120 acres now home to 100 original old farmhouses as well as original structures from the worlds of crafts and commerce (guided tour). If we have time to spare we can go through this area 1.7 km by a historic narrow gauge railway. After lunch we will visit the Stiegls Brewery - The Art of Brewing at the Highest Level. 14 Up to the 16th century the brewing of beer was women’s business only. Later these ladies were persecuted as witches and often punished with penalty to death. So brewing beer finally became a domain for men. In remembrance of this time we are visiting the most famous brewery of Salzburg with a very interesting museum which tells everything about brewing beer from its beginning up to now.
