What do we do?
CAP promotes academic success and supports college completion for all of its participants. CAP has helped
students adjust to the demands of college life for 30 plus years at OHIO. CAP helps students just like you accomplish great things by offering a wide variety of academic support services at no cost to students. These
services include:
• FREE TUTORING: Available for many courses. CAP students may receive up to 4 hours per course, per week
of complimentary tutoring.
• UC COURSES: All CAP students are required to take UC 1100: Learning Strategies. Students whose ACT or SAT
scores indicate a need also take UC D998: College Reading Skills and/or UC 1060: Academic Computing
Skills.
• ACADEMIC ADVISING: Students are assigned a CAP advisor to answer questions, offer suggestions, advise
them on course selection, and more. Students must meet with their CAP advisor each semester before
scheduling but are welcome to do so more often.
• PEER ADVISORS: CAP freshmen and sophomores are assigned a Peer Advisor (PA) to help them adjust to
the rigors of college life. PAs maintain frequent contact and are available to assist as needed. PAs also staff
Study Tables, a 2-hour block each week when any CAP student can drop by for help studying.
• COMPUTER ASSISTANCE: CAP co-sponsors a computer learning lab where students receive assistance with
tech-related issues. Skilled lab assistants help students better use technology to complete class assignments.
CAP students receive FREE printing, including color printing, in this lab in the AAC.
• CULTURAL EVENT TICKETS: CAP pays a portion of the ticket price for CAP students who want to attend cultural events on campus. Watch for e-mails about upcoming events.
• TECHNOLOGY LOAN PROGRAM: CAP will loan graphing and non-graphing calculators to CAP students. Just
ask a CAP staff member about this service.

The College Transition
If you’re like most students, you probably have some
concerns about starting college. You may even have
asked yourself some of these questions:
•
•
•
•
•
How will I learn my way around campus?
Will I be able to handle the coursework?
Will I make friends?
How will I balance work and school?
What if I get sick?
Once you start classes and get into your new routines,
many of these fears will probably go away on their own.
It can also help to talk to someone; for example, your
peers and your peer advisor. Remember that you are
not alone.
We created this calendar to help ease your transition
into college. College is a time of learning about yourself and the world. It doesn’t have to be the frightening
event some students envision. We want to give you the
knowledge to calm your fears and the tools to help you
succeed.

Managing your time
An important aspect of attending college is learning
how to manage your time. Going to college involves
balancing school, work, family, friends, and play. Most
students think they know how to manage their time
when they enter college. However, the truth is that time
management is a skill that often requires much effort.
The study skills teaching staff at the AAC recommends
making a schedule to help manage your time
efficiently.
Visit http://www.ohio.edu/tutoring/studyskills.cfm for
more information on the benefits of making a daily,
weekly, and semester schedule.
Don’t forget that CAP is here to help you! Talk to your
Professional or Peer Advisor if you are having time
management difficulties. Also, individual study skills
tutoring and UC courses are available through CAP and
the AAC.

Academic Advising
Academic advising is important for all OU students. Your faculty advisor is typically a
professor in your college and/or major. S/he can help you plan your schedule, remind
you of your major’s requirements, suggest courses for you to take and answer other
questions you might have. Here is a list of steps to follow in order to make the most of
your academic advising.
• Find your advisor’s office in your first semester. Note office hours, telephone
number, and e-mail address.
• Take the initiative to contact your advisor. Don’t wait for your advisor to contact
you.
• Make an appointment during pre-registration, and meet with your advisor at least
once a semester.
• Remember that you are ultimately
responsible for seeing that all your
graduation requirements are met.
• Go to advising sessions with a draft
of your schedule for that semester.
Ask questions! Your advisor is there to
help you.
As a CAP student, you must discuss
classes with your CAP advisor in
addition to your faculty advisor.
Your CAP advisor will lift your CAP
registration hold once you have met
with him or her.

Managing Stress & Anxiety
College can be stressful! It can be difficult to balance
academics, activities, a social life, and work. Add
increasing pressure to do well academically, and some
students respond by turning to alcohol, drugs, overeating,
oversleeping, etc. These poor choices can be very harmful.
There are many ways to deal with stress in a healthy manner.
For example:
• Reduce stressors
• Eat regularly and nutritiously
• Exercise
• Have a support system
• Develop relaxation techniques
Important Dates
November 7 – 9
• Dads Weekend
Tuesday, November 11
• Veterans Day holiday (University offices officially
closed; classes not in session)

• Thanksgiving Break – classes not in session
Exams & Assignments
One of the most stressful times of the semester is final exam
week. Being anxious about takings tests can negatively
impact health and grades. The following is a list of ways to
deal with test anxiety.
• Study in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute to
study for a test. Cramming the night before usually
increases stress.
• Get a good night’s sleep before exams.
• If you aren’t sure of something before a test, ask your
professor or TA for help.
• Study with a friend
• Visit your CAP Peer Advisor.
If all else fails and you feel like you can’t deal with the
stress on your own, you may want to visit Counseling and
Psychological Services (CPS). With the WellBeing portion of
the student health fee, you are entitled to 13 free individual
sessions per year, and unlimited free group mental health
services with CPS.

there are many places to look and eligibility requirements vary.
You may be able to find a scholarship based on your major,
college of enrollment, or grades.
Apply through OU http://www.ohio.edu/financialaid/scholar/
scholar_about.cfm.
• Find out if local service organizations, such as Rotary International or Lions Clubs International offer small scholarships.
Also check your local newspaper.
• Look into professional associations who offer scholarships.

you to work between classes. It will also help to
have an employer who recognizes that you are
a student and understands that your education
comes first. OU offers many places to work and
has job programs such as PACE and CSES hourly.
Federal work-study positions are also available for
those who qualify.
• Don’t work more than 20 hours per week.

undecided when they enter the university, and nearly 60%
of students change their majors at least once. Students
at OU may remain undecided until they have earned 45
credit hours.
University College is an academic college at OU that
serves undecided students who are interested in exploring
the university’s options before deciding on a major or
degree program. The University College’s academic
advisors can assist you in evaluating your interests and
goals in order to choose an appropriate major.
CAP is part of University College, so if you have a question
about declaring or changing your major, talk to your CAP
Professional Advisor.

Hocking Hills
Nestled in the bio-diverse forests of Logan, OH (just off Rt. 33), the Hocking Hills experience always
leaves first-time visitors with dropped jaw, exclaiming, “Am I really in Ohio?!” A visit to these majestic
Hills is the ultimate way to spend a weekend afternoon. Camping is also permitted (and highly
enjoyable).
Stroud’s Run & Dow Lake
Just 10 minutes from campus sits the sprawling, always fun, Dow Lake. Stroud’s Run is the part of the
lake where the beach, sand volleyball courts, and canoe/kayak rental booth reside. Stroud’s is the
perfect place to escape the stresses that come along with college work! Pack a blanket, a book,
some snacks – and you’re all set.
The Bike Path
Spanning an ever-growing distance, the bike path runs from the end of E. State St. in Athens all the
way to Nelsonville. The bike path offers a wonderful opportunity to walk, skate, ride, or run through
campus along the Hocking River.
The Ridges
Perched atop the hill across the Hocking River, and near the Convo, is a collection of buildings known
as the Ridges. If you haven’t heard about the Ridges yet, I’m sure you will. It’s a storied place! But it
also offers some great hiking (Radar Hill!), a miniature golf course, and the Outdoor Pursuits Challenge
Course. Perfect for those wanting to get off campus, but not wanting to drive.
Farmer’s Market
Every Saturday morning (10am-1pm) in the Athens Mall parking lot, one of the most beloved weekly
rituals for all Athenians occurs: the Farmer’s Market. The Market must be experienced and enjoyed in
person, words do it no justice. So bring a friend or two and see firsthand why Athens is such a special
place to call home. We’ll see you there!
Uptown
Always an interesting time… Uptown Athens boasts an array of delicious eateries, coffee shops,
ice cream options, bakeries, and more. Lovely for people watching, shopping, taking in some live
music, and experiencing the culture of Athens, Uptown is a must-do for anyone passing through - or
spending their next four years - in Athens.

Student Support Services is one of several TRIO programs. Other TRIO programs
