Our Mission Statement
We are the community of St. Charles Borromeo in Boardman, Ohio. Called by Baptism and centered in the Eucharist, we come together to worship, educate and proclaim
the Gospel. In gratitude for all God’s gifts, we are called
to be good stewards as we share our time, talent and
treasure. As disciples of the Lord, we continue Christ’s
mission of love, justice, and service to all.

Weekend of October 11 & 12, 2014
From the Pastor’s Desk...
Big Weekend . . . A great
many people have put a great
deal of thought, time, energy
and effort into this weekend’s
Ministry Fair and I urge all of
you to take 30 or 45 minutes to
come this very Sunday from
Noon until 4:00 p.m. to, at least,
get a visual representation of all
that goes into keeping Saint
Charles Borromeo Parish functioning. In the course of the
preparation for the Ministry Fair, much thought was
given to insuring that it will not only be informative,
but also fun. So, it’s not like I’m encouraging you to
show up Sunday afternoon for a root canal. Just one
small visit will help your appreciation for just how
much time, talent, and treasure goes into the operation of our parish. And that is certainly one of the
points that cannot be made often enough. As I have
been forecasting what life will be like at Catholic parishes in the near future, one of the issues I probably
haven’t hit hard enough is the fact that much of the
ministry that will be done will be the time and talent of
the non-clerical, non-professional lay people. We are
certainly blessed at Saint Charles Borromeo to have
talented people working in ministry at our parish. But,
even with them, there is still so much more that needs
to be done and that needs to come from – don’t look
around for someone else to step forward – that needs
to come from you. One thing that is absolutely true is
that many people at Saint Charles Parish are not afraid
to engage themselves in the ministry of this parish and
the overall church. Chief among the work that people
here do with willing hands and hearts is the care of
the needy. Martha’s Cupboard, Saint Vincent de Paul
Soup Kitchen, the Community Meal, the Coat Drive,
always have an outstanding commitment of our great
parishioners to assisting the less fortunate. And that
is, but one area of ministry that we are so blessed to
have parishioners willing to get truly involved in.
There are so many other areas that could use your
help as well – sometimes we need liturgical ministers –
ushers and greeters and choir members – and other

times we could use help with Adult Servers at Funerals
or Bereavement Ministers to assist families at time of
loss. One of the things that we are ever on the lookout for are people to participate in the work of the
Pastoral Council Commissions. As one who is forever
complaining about attending meetings, that probably
doesn’t serve as a real strong encouragement for people to join in on commission meetings. (In my defense, you have never heard me complain about a
Pastoral Council or Finance Council meeting! Both
groups are very hard-working and very helpful.) It is
hoped that by attending the Ministry Fair, one or two
people will be able to envision the overall planning
that is needed and will step forward to help out on the
Parish Life Commission or the Stewardship Commission or one of the other ones as well. There is a
whole wide array of ministries that need your own expertise and by attending the Ministry Fair this very
Sunday you will see for yourself how much you can
help.
The day after the Ministry Fair, our annual Stewardship Intention form will be mailed to all parishioners. Now, even before you get this in the mail, I want
you to promise me and promise yourself you will not
just throw it away!! There is so much of life that happens to us, so much that we really don’t have control
over. But this is a chance, an important chance, to
not let things just happen, but to put yourself in control. Determine , through prayer, through reflection,
through family discussion, determine what you are
going to do for the year in your relationship with your
parish. If you determine that will be nothing, that’s
fine as long as you gave it real consideration. Please
still fill out the form though. Don’t just let the year slip
by and do nothing. Your engagement in the parish is
vitally important and your commitment of time, talent,
and treasure makes all the difference. Before you
even see it in the mail, I am requesting each of you
takes a positive approach to this year’s Stewardship
Intention form coming to a mailbox near you.
Next Sunday, October 19, 2014, is World Mission
Sunday. World Mission Sunday reminds all Catholics
that they are part of the missionary effort of the
Church, even those of us who never leave Ohio.
Check out the website IAmAMissionary.org for further
information. There will not be a second collection, but
please put your Mission Sunday envelope in the regular collection basket.
Congratulations to Rocco Michael Rosati, to John
Joseph Timko, to their parents and their godparents
on the occasion of their baptism here at Saint Charles
this past weekend. Best wishes to all . . . Thanks.

Prayer Shawls
Can you touch a prayer?
Can you pull it close and feel its comfort?
You can if it comes as a gift in the form of a Prayer Shawl.
Prayer Shawls are simple gifts of grace from God that are
prayerfully and lovingly stitched by volunteers of St.
Charles Graceful Hands and prayed over as a reminder
that God’s promise is always with us. Shawls can be useful
for: those undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort
after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; or for
prayer or meditation. Prayer Shawls are available to anyone free of charge. Please call the parish office to reserve
one or stop in to pick one up.

Reflections
Table Talk with Deacon Mike:
Social Justice
LEAN ON ME
I witnessed something two weeks ago that happened between the twins I never thought I would see.
Lily is the more outgoing, aggressive one, while Sophie is
very shy and introspective. Sophie had a doctor’s appointment, Mari was going to take Deacon, and I was
there to babysit Maddie and Lily. Now, Lily and Sophie
act like most siblings do, getting on each other’s nerves
and trying to outdo one another. Mari said, “Sophie, get
your coat on ‘cuz we got to go,” when Lily stopped what
she was going, ran over to Sophie and said, “Sophie, you
have to go to the doctors. I will miss you,” and gave her
the biggest hug I’ve ever seen them exchange. It was as if
Lily was giving Sophie some of her own strength so Sophie could get through her doctor visit, which she did
(although for some strange reason Sophie now thinks her
doctor is a pirate!). Lily was there for her little sister.
I often wonder about people whom I’ve heard
say, “I don’t need to go to mass, I have nothing I need to
pray for.” Well, maybe that’s true that you have nothing
personally to pray for, but what about your brothers and
sisters in faith who might not be as fortunate? Don’t you
think, that even though they may get on your nerves or
you might always be trying to outdo them, they need
someone to lean on, to give them strength to get through
whatever it is they are facing? That is why we need to
come to Church, to be the visible sign of concern for one
another, to give one another a ‘spiritual’ hug and let them
know you care, and you’re there for them.
Clearin’ the table.

The Convenience of the Gospel
Many living with the Christian Faith, not only here at St. Charles Borromeo Parish and Community, but everywhere, sometimes seem to be looking for convenience in the Gospel. Let’s look at some basics: Gospel means
“good news”. How many Gospels are there? Four? No. There’s only one
Gospel. There are four versions: Mark’s, Matthew’s, Luke’s and John’s. In
our Christian, or New Testament, besides the Gospel, there are the Acts of
the Apostles (supposedly also authored by the same Luke who authored the
one version of the Gospel) and numerous letters or epistles authored mostly
by St. Paul. Other epistles include those written by James, Peter (ascribed to
the Apostle Peter), the Epistle to the Hebrews, John (ascribed to the Apostle
John) and one by Jude, and the final Book of the New Testament, the Book
of Revelation (also ascribed to the Apostle John).
If a person reads any or all of these books or works carefully, thoughtfully and prayerfully, keeping in mind that the Church teaches us that they
are all the revealed Word of God, it is difficult to find any concept of convenience in their presentation. Quite the opposite. They all seem aimed at
change, transformation, challenge, faithfulness, obedience, submission of
will, setting and getting priorities correct, sorting out the things that are or
should be really important in our lives, etc. In my mind, most if not all of
these usually are viewed as inconvenient.
We recently had to discontinue two weekend masses at our Parish
because of the shortage of priests. This will become inconvenient for many
of us. Some of our eighth graders attending public or home schools, preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation are now going to be expected to attend
CCD course after they are confirmed in February. This will cause an inconvenience for some of them and for their parents. CCD classes are conducted
on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings for the public school children of
the Parish but seem to cause many inconveniences for some families and
parents and students because of conflicting activities which may occur
(family gatherings, trips, youth sports, dance classes, etc.).
The faith we have been given is a gift. This Gift needs attention paid
to it. It just can’t be taken for granted. It can’t be switched on and off. Often times genuinely living our Faith in every aspect of our daily lives is an
inconvenience. Thinking about others, caring for one another, loving and
forgiving our enemies, being patient with a fellow employee or an inept
manager from the workplace, forgiving our spouse or children for the mistakes or bad decisions they may sometimes make, honoring or caring for an
aged parent in a nursing home, making significant and genuine financial
sacrifices for a worthy charitable need of the parish, community or Church,
all can be very inconvenient. “Christianity has not been tried and found
wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried.” (G. K. Chesterton 1874 –
1936).
This is how individual and social justice and tranquility is achieved.
This is how Christianity’s Kingdom of God begins to manifest itself and is
accomplished. It almost always is inconvenient. It is rarely…..a convenience.

STEWARDSHIP
Our Time, Our Talent, & Our Treasure
Stewardship Thought of the Week:
The parable in today’s Gospel has us reflect on who we invite to the banquet feast. Not in terms of family gatherings
of special occasions, but through out generosity and love,
who do we invite to share in God’s bounty? Do we offer of
ourselves so those who fill our “main roads” may have the
basic necessities of life?
Our Gift of Treasure for October 4 & 5
Offertory Collection: $29,883.37 Online: $4,134.00
Children’s Collection: $131.50
Building Fund: $404.00
Catholic Exponent: $415.25

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”- Matthew 5:4
Experiencing grief for any reason can be challenging to endure.
St. Charles would like to provide a community and network of
support to try to navigate these difficulties. Support groups are
a great way to help one another to work through the ongoing
struggles of grief.
Our first meeting and information session will be held on Tuesday, October 28 at 6 p.m. in the St. Luke room. We plan to
meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month ongoing, dependent on
interest and attendance.
Please call Diana or Deacon Paul in the parish office at 330758-2325 with any questions.
Come to the Table – and Bring Your Bible
Sundays, November 2, 9, 16 at 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in the
St. Matthew Room
Why we do what we do?
How many are aware that what we say and do at Mass
comes from Sacred Scripture? Using the Constitution on
the Sacred Liturgy, The General Instructions of the Roman Missal III, videos, and the Bible, Deacon Mike will
examine the intent and structure of the liturgy. Participants are asked to bring their Bible, with other material
provided.
Weekend of October 11 & 12, 2014
Our Parish at a Glance
Stewardship Intention Forms
Our annual intention form is being mailed to every Parish Family this week. Please prayerfully reflect on how
you can use your personal gifts of time, talent, and treasure here at St. Charles Borromeo Parish.
Please return your Intention Form to the Parish either by
dropping it in the collection basket, at the office, or in
the mail within the next few weeks.
Attention:
Ladies Guild meeting is Monday, October 20, 2014 at 10:00
a.m. in the St. Matthew Room. We want everybody who belongs to Ladies Guild to help out. We want everyone to bring
ten items to fill our baskets. It could be baked goods, canned
goods, spaghetti sauce, etc. Bring it with you on Monday,
October 20, if not before. Don’t put it in the baskets in the
gathering space. We need your help!
If you have any questions, please call Clara 330-758-6710.
Due to the decrease in Masses, we are asking parishioners to only
schedule up to three Mass Intentions per person, per year. (Only
one weekend Mass is allowed). Please consider other parishioners,
as they too, would like to remember their loved ones with their
own Mass intentions. Thank you for your understanding
and cooperation.
Priesthood Sunday
Priesthood Sunday is a day to reflect upon and affirm the priesthood as a central role in the life of the Church. This year Priesthood Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday, October 26, 2014.
You can show your appreciation of their ministry with a personal
thank you after mass, a card signed by all of the members of your
family, or a spiritual bouquet. Parish organizations could also
include a prayer for priests in the mass intentions or sponsor a
coffee and donut reception after mass. To find more information
on how you can celebrate this day and thank your priest(s) go to
www.priestsunday.org. The information is offered by the Serra
Club, an organization that works to help build awareness of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Priesthood Sunday offers an opportunity for priests and their parishioners to build a stronger working relationship. Take a few
moments on Priesthood Sunday to thank your parish priests for
their commitment to the diocese and their parish communities.

In Our Community
THANK YOU!
The Office of Evangelization at the
Diocese of Youngstown thanks
everyone who participated in the
General Assembly Survey.
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy
schedules to fill out the questionnaire.
According to the Diocese, “The survey results are
overwhelming. There is much being said by those
submitting surveys. Much related to the survey
itself and some have taken this opportunity to vent frustration or compliment
the work being done in parishes.”
