Ballots will start arriving in your mailbox a week from today, believe it or not. There are important judicial races

can be an informed voter.
As per usual, our format is a short speech, a rebuttal, and then a chance for audience members from our
neighborhood to ask questions.
On behalf of the Maple Leaf Community Council Executive Board,
David Miller
President
Maple Leaf Community Council
The Greenwood Community Council will hold an Election Forum on Tuesday October 21, 7PM at the
Taproot Theatre. We will feature the dueling early childhood initiative ballot measures, along with the class size
initiative, monorail and transit measures. We plan also to invite candidates to be available after the event to
meet with constituents (depending on timing and whether the Taproot can stay open that late.)

THE SEATTLE MAN WHO'S KEEPING THE ART OF PIANO TUNING ALIVE
MY NORTHWEST
Seattle's 70-year-old Mike Gill has been tuning pianos for 45 years. Like blacksmithing and letter
writing, the profession of piano tuner has been added to the list of dying arts. Gill, who lost his
sight when he was 17, owns the Greenwood business Blind Mike's Piano Repair. Mike says it can
be hard to get established as a new piano tuner, to build a clientele. He has been tuning the
Westin Hotel's piano since it opened in 1970 and local performance venues call him up when they
need their piano tuned for a show.

Web: www.seattle.gov/util/broadviewprojectsTake winter by storm
With rain this week and more to come as we enter the fall season, Seattle Public Utilities is urging residents to
help clear drains to help reduce the potential for localized flooding. Leaves and debris such as garbage can
overwhelm storm drains, ditches and culverts when heavy rains hit, clogging the drainage system and resulting
in localized flooding.
Here are some tips to help keep Broadview drains clean and reduce localized flooding:

Maintain private ditches, culverts, gutters and downspouts by keeping them clean, flowing and
directed away from properties and hillsides. Culverts that run under driveways are privately owned
and are not maintained by the city.
 Call SPU’s 24/7 emergency services number to report sewer backups, major flooding and landslide
issues as they occur. In Seattle, this number is 206-386-1800.

If you have a sewer backflow valve on your side sewer, please remember to maintain it once every
three months (four times a year), especially now that it is storm season. Also, remember not to put any
fats or grease down the sink, which can reduce the effectiveness of the backflow valve.

Visit the Take Winter By Storm website for more information, including safety tips, weather forecasts
and regional emergency services information.
Thank you. - Celia

Weekend Traffic: Opa! Seahawks and Sounders are back
Also, Heart Walk, Greek Festival and several construction projects
SEATTLE – Fall is in the air and the weather is becoming less certain. When planning your trips around the
city this weekend, in addition to the weather, keep in mind the Seahawks and Sounders are back in town,
and several construction projects will affect traffic. The Heart and Stroke Walk will take place at the Seattle
Center and on downtown streets on Saturday morning, and a festival on Capitol Hill will be hosted by
Seattle’s Greek community throughout the weekend.
The West Emerson Street overpass, just south of the Ballard Bridge, is closed for 12 weeks starting today
for renewal of the roadway surface. This weekend, 15th Avenue West will be closed nightly to allow crews
to replace a girder on the Emerson Street overpass that has been damaged when hit by tall trucks. On
Friday and Saturday the street will close at 8 p.m. and reopen at 9 a.m. the next morning. If needed, the
street will also close on Sunday and Monday nights. For details and detour maps, see the project Web
page, www.seattle.gov/transportation/15thAveWestOverpass.htm.
Construction for the Seawall project resumed on the central waterfront last week. While some waterfront
businesses are closed during the construction, many waterfront destinations remain open, including the
Seattle Aquarium, Argosy Cruises, the Great Wheel and Pier 57, Colman Dock, and also businesses on the
east side of Alaskan Way. The ferry entry point has shifted to just south of Madison Street. Alaskan Way
remains open with two-way traffic under the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Traffic flaggers will assist vehicles,
pedestrians and bicyclists around work areas when utility work crosses the roadway or pathways.

Eastbound and westbound Mercer Street between Fifth and Ninth avenues will be reduced to one lane in
each direction starting at 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the next morning through the morning of Oct. 11 for
water line installation The southbound side of Dexter Avenue North is down to one lane at night in the
block between Roy and Mercer, on the same dates and at the same times.
Avoid the stress of driving and reduce air pollution this weekend –ride your bike, walk, or consider using
public transportation and leave the driving to someone else:
