when so many others avert their gaze. Photographer Mariana Cook traveled the

lives to pursue justice. Among the activists featured are former President Jimmy
Carter, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Aung San Suu Kyi, Kofi Annan, and Richard

HUB-Robeson Center, First Floor
12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Linda Stein is an artist-activist who explores gender roles and stereotypes through
the creation of her large, heroic female torsos. They are intended to scramble
gender expectations and merge opposites: they are female and male; they are
strong though soft, warrior-like albeit pacifist guardians. The black leather torsos
embellished with buckles, zippers, and chains are complemented by more colorful
acrylicized-paper torsos featuring iconic Wonder Woman motifs. The Fluidity of
Gender is part of a seven-year touring exhibition, lecture, and performance that
will see more than twenty-four museums and galleries through 2017. For more

Leading by Example: Peers Helping Peers in Large Lecture Classes
Presented by Penn State Learning
Sparks Building, Room 7
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Undergraduate Guided Study Groups (GSG) leaders will share how learning
communities are instrumental in helping our students, especially those enrolled
in challenging large lecture courses (350+ attendance), meet academic success.
The student leaders will provide an overview and discussion about how they create
and sustain safe and welcoming out-of-class collaborative learning environments in
which peers can come together to review course material, use the language of the
discipline, and enhance their problem-solving, critical thinking and study skills. The
result of ongoing /weekly participation is that students improve their academic skills
and, at the same time, improve their understanding of course content. The trained and
closely supervised undergraduate leaders who attend class lectures are the key to the
Guided Study Groups success. Having taken and mastered the course previously, the
leaders know the content of the course and the expectations of the professor. In the
free regularly scheduled study sessions, the GSG leaders blend course content and
learning strategies. Students not only respond to content review, but they also benefit
from meeting and interacting with peers from their lecture and receive more subtle
inclusion of study skills such as graphic organization of information, effective use of
notes and text, and methods of self-testing. Courses in which Guided Study Groups
(GSG) sessions are offered: ACCTG 211, BIOL 110, CHEM 110, 112 & 210, ECON 102
& 104, MATH 034, 110, 140, 140B, 141, 200 & 201, PHIL 012, PHYS 211L, 212L,
250 & 251 and STAT 200. For more information visit www.pennstatelearning.psu.edu.

Fraternity and Sorority Life at Penn State
HUB-Robeson Center, Freeman Auditorium
11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
The Penn State fraternity and sorority community has been in existence over 100 years.

history of fraternities and sororities at the University, (2) provide valuable information
about the fraternity and sorority experience, (3) provide opportunities to ask any
questions about the program, and (4) allow parents to meet the staff of the Office of
Fraternity and Sorority Life. One of the goals of this program is to allow parents to
have a candid discussion with the staff so we ask and encourage parents to attend
this session without their sons, daughters, and/or siblings. For more information

The GeoVISTA Center Open House
Presented by the Department of Geography
Walker Building, Room 206
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
With the proliferation of large amounts of information that has a geographic location,
GeoSpatial analysis technologies are becoming more and more important. With larger
volumes of this information, a great challenge is to bring forth the most important
information for a particular audience. For example, if you are a crisis manager and need
to know what citizens that are part of the crisis are talking about on social media, how
do you analyze and differentiate the important locations being discussed in relation
to this crisis, versus the locations being discussed about the most recent tour of a
popular music band. Come see the latest research at The GeoVISTA Center in these
GeoSpatial technologies. For more information, visit http://www.geovista.psu.edu/.

1:30 p.m. (merchandise sale will begin at 2:30 p.m)
Want to learn more about the largest student-run philanthropy in the world that over
15,000 PSU students participate in annually? Go State, Beat Cancer: An Introduction
to THON at Penn State will provide you with everything you want to know! The Penn
State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as THON, is a yearlong
effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. Since 1977,
THON has raised more than $101 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State
Hershey Children’s Hospital. THON 2015 will take place from February 20-22, 2015
at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, but we would like you to join us on October 11,
2014 to learn more about our organization. Enjoy an informative presentation by
Megan Renaut, the THON 2015 Executive Director, alongside the other 15 members
of the Executive Committee. Merchandise will be for sale, as well. Following this
event, WPSU’s one hour documentary, “Why We Dance: The Story of THON” will be
shown in the HUB, Freeman Auditorium (see complete event description below).
This documentary will expand on all things THON and provide insight on how our
organization works year-round to beat pediatric cancer. We hope to see you there, for
the kids! For more information, please contact Caroline Sheep, THON 2015 Special
Events Director, at [email protected] or 814-865-0510.

HUB-Robeson Center, Freeman Auditorium
3:00 p.m. – 4:10 p.m.
This documentary chronicles Penn State’s student-run philanthropy, THON, and the
children, families, and students who are changed by their experience. To many people,
THON is a weekend-long event with 46 straight hours of dancing. What they may not
see is an entire year spent raising awareness and money to conquer childhood cancer.
“Why We Dance: The Story of THON” will introduce you to the inspirational children
battling cancer and the Penn State students who participate in THON, dedicating
themselves to making a difference for others. As the THON clock ticks down on hour
46, not a soul is left unchanged.

undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, and service learning courses.
Are they important? Absolutely! Engaged scholarship experiences positively
influence the quality of student experiences, staying in school, grades, personal
and social development, and potential employers like students with multiple
“hands on” engaged scholarship experiences. In fact, Penn State encourages every
undergraduate to participate in at least one engaged scholarship experience during
their time here. Come to this dynamic, fun session to learn more about the kinds of
opportunities available and how your student can select an engaged scholarship path
to strengthen their course of study! For more information call 863-4624, or email

experiences. This session is not about receiving a financial scholarship.
