This Sunday’s readings give us a beautiful picture of what a real banquet in heaven would be. Jesus uses images that
we are familiar with: a great bangquet or a wedding feast. It will be “a feast of rich food and choice wines” (Isaiah).

The Gospel story is about the wedding feast given by a King for his son. The invitation is for everyone but we are
shocked that many turned it down for different excuses. “So the King orders that those who refused the invitation be
destroyed and their city be burned” (Matthew). They were foolish to turn down the invitation coming from a King.
The banquets and feasting both Isaiah and Matthew provide us symbolize God’s warmth hospitality, abundant
goodness and rich blessings for everyone concretely manifested in the Holy Eucharist – Christ’s sacrifice of himself:
a feast made for love, a reconciliation feast, a token of God’s goodwill towards humanity.
So how can we refuse the invitation? Unfortunately, Church life is exactly this. The invitation is given and exhorts all
to come but due to different reasons, only a few can make it to the “gathering.” Many times we belong to the
“many” who do not enthusiastically respond. We can also be those who postpone commitments to serve or simply
those who are indifferent to the community of faith. We can be deprived of basic comfort while serving in the Church’s
ministries. We can grow tired and succumb to the trials and tribulations. There will be many forms of discouragement
but again, the invitation is there and we need to respond. “Many are invited, but few are chosen” (Matthew).
The last part of the parable might puzzle many of us about the “wedding garment.” The man who turned up without
the wedding garment was clearly not ready for the feast. Some scholars suggested that this refers to the garment of
Baptism which makes us all welcome in God’s banquet – the Wedding Supper of the Holy Mass. But this could also
mean a garment of humility and sincerity, of repentance and conversion, of a change of heart and mind, that truly
make us worthy to participate in the Holy Eucharist and they remain the condition for our entrance to the heavenly
Kingdom, to the bliss of the eternal banquet.
“Our God will supply whatever we need. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen!” (Philippians).

OCTOBER THEMES
During October we honor Mary and her role in our faith and in our lives. We honor her as
the Mother of Jesus and as our Mother. We remember her great faith and her surrender to
God's will. The scene of the Annunciation is particularly instructive as we see Mary at
prayer listening to the Word of God communicated through an angel. She is
"overshadowed by the Holy Spirit" and in her humility she is transformed into the Mother
of God. All of the themes of Mary's life: her faith, attentiveness, discernment, openness,
trust, humility and courage serve as guiding virtues for us, too. During October, when we
pray the Rosary with special faithfulness and attentiveness, our praise and our
contemplation deepen our commitment and grow our love and fruitfulness in good work.
October is one busy month as God invites us to closer friendship and worship.
Our time in prayer and meditation upon the Mysteries of the Rosary and the other miraculous
events in the life of Mary, reminds us that authentic prayer leads to commitment and action
on behalf of respecting the precious gift of life. As Catholic Christians, we try with God's help
to respect and reverence the lives of others and our own lives. We commit ourselves to protecting life along the whole continuum of
respect life opportunities and challenges. We are concerned about the unborn children and the suffering children of this world as well
as those lonely and abandoned in old age. We care about those persons whose dignity is disrespected by war, domestic and family
violence, human trafficking, terrible poverty and hunger.
Conversion to a way of life that values and protects the precious gift of life is an ongoing battle with selfishness, greed, materialism
and superficiality of life. Our witness by prayer, word and example can make a difference and nudge our culture toward a world that
is respectful of the Word and Will of God and expressive of that which is most noble, heroic and precious in human life.
October can be a very busy month indeed!
