Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
COUNCILLOR REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2014
October 2014
At the Council meeting on Tuesday September 23rd, administration
presented financing options for property owners for rural water and
sewer. Recommendations are that property owners contribution of 10
percent to capital costs for piped water and sewer systems in Anzac,
Conklin and Gregoire Lake Estates, be collected through a local
improvement tax and that Janvier be collected with contracts
administered by the municipality. Property owners can also make lump
sum payments.
The next step is for Administration to proceed with community engagement, submit grant
applications and maintain the proposed project schedule.
I was in Janvier on September 15, and met with the Janvier Dene Wood Buffalo Community
Association (JDWBCA). I also met the new Principal of Janvier School, Priscilla Gagnon at
the meeting. Concerns were discussed.
The Rural development committee met on Tuesday, September 23, to discuss development
fees. It was a lively discussion.
There will be a ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday October 1, at the future location
of the Conklin multiplex. This will happen between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm. Mayor Blake,
Councillor Phil Meagher, Councillor Julia Cardinal and I will be in attendance.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo now has a 24 hour call line. “The Pulse” Wood
Buffalo call line is 780-743-7000 and is available to all citizens 24/7, 365 days a year. This
line is available for accurate current information around the clock about anything
concerning the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. There are fridge magnets available
with this information at the contact office in Anzac, Janvier and Conklin.
The Veterans Memorial Highway group is meeting in Fort McMurray on Monday
September 29. This group is one of my Council appointed Boards. The items we will be
discussing are the heavy load corridor which includes highway 881 and 36. The heavy load
corridor highway begins at the border between Alberta and the United States and
continues up to the end of highway 881 at the intersection of highway 63.
For any good deeds or concerns please call 780-334-0516 or e-mail
[email protected]

THE APP WITH A PULSE!
Pulse: Wood Buffalo Call Line, our new non-emergency, 24/7 Call Line (780-743-7000), has been
successfully launched and we are now ready to introduce the Pulse: Wood Buffalo PingStreet App.
This app gives citizens the opportunity to access municipal information 24/7 and provides real time
information on their smart phones wherever they are, whenever they need it. The app, like the Call
Line, will not replace 911 in an emergency.
While the Call Line allows citizens to engage directly with the Municipality, the app provides real time,
real events information and can be downloaded off Google Play, Blackberry App World or the Apple
App Store. More information is available at www.woodbuffalo.ab.ca/pulse.
The PingStreet App provides information on Garbage & Recycling (waste, recycling, pickup
schedules), Road Closures (city-related road/sidewalk construction and closures), Government
(information and contacts for the Mayor, Councillors, and Member of Parliament), and Contact (needto-know phone numbers, emails and websites).
Citizens can get in touch with the Municipality directly by selecting Report (e.g., potholes, graffiti,
bylaws), or Have Your Say (share ideas about how we can make the municipality a better place to
live, work and play).
REMINDER
Please remove garbage bins off the road or shoulder after pick up. Pull them back onto your property.
They are in the way of service and public vehicles.
Household waste (black) will be emptied every week.
Recycling Bins (light blue & dark blue) will be emptied alternate weeks.

900 SCAMS
CRTC improves safeguards for 1-900 users
The 900 scams are a variation on a prize scheme. The consumer is
encouraged, usually through an offer in the mail, to call a 1 900 number in
order to find out how much money he or she has won. The implication is that
you have won a large prize - cash, cars, boats etc., and your brief phone call
will confirm which prize is yours.
You must take the time to read the offer carefully and understand your odds of
winning.
The CRTC advises that some telephone companies offer free services that will
block access to all 900/976 numbers.
For example blocking services for residential customers are usually free, but
customers who change their mind may have to pay a $10.00 fee to remove the
block and reactivate 900/976 services.
Some companies charge a fee to block 900/976 services. Offers vary and
customers should check with their telephone provider for details.
