TEL: +1-605-444-4500 FAX: 1-605-444-4505 Details: This interactive workshop will explore concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and implementation of UDL with Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) in the special education classroom. Participants will learn about current research and best practices as we examine communication during student-­‐ teacher interactions in structured classroom activities. Adaptations for classrooms and activities will be measured by quantity (e.g., responses, initiations); quality (e.g., length, complexity); functionality (e.g., requesting, commenting); and communication methods (e.g., vocalizing, verbalizing, signing, AAC). Participants will learn how to adapt materials for classroom implementation through hands-­‐on activities. Speakers: Laura J. Ball, Ph.D., CCC-­‐SLP, Children’s National Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Ø Dr. Ball is Director of Research for Hearing & Speech at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She maintains an active caseload of children with complex communication needs. Her interest are in AAC and motor speech disorders. Rhys Myrick Potts, M.A., Ed., Behavior Consultation and Psychological Services, Winterville, NC Ø Ms. Potts is an Educational Consultant with Behavior Consultation and Psychological Services in NC. She works with school districts and home therapy programs across the state. Her interests are Autism, ABA/VBA, and Assistive Technology. She also teaches at East Carolina University. Anna Elise Strickland, M.A., Ed. Pitt County Schools, Greenville, NC Ø Ms. Strickland is a special education teacher in Greenville, NC. She has taught students with severe intellectual disabilities as well as students on the autism spectrum. She also works with individuals with autism in their homes and communities through the Autism Society of North Carolina and Behavior Consultation and Psychological Services. Her interests include curriculum and instruction, ABA/VBA, and technology. Demonstrate how UDL will benefit children in special education. 2. Demonstrate how AAC will increase functional communication and decrease maladaptive behaviors in the population of severe/profound disorders. 3. Adapt classrooms and activities using UDS strategies Note: CEUs will be available for educators and speech-­‐language pathologists. More information to come!!
