Landmarks: Barneveld High School
Basketball Scorekeeper

This community landmark
might be claimed by the Village of
Barneveld and the Town of Brigham.
In fact, it is often found travelling
about the state, sort of our traveling
landmark.
“I’ve been the scorer for the
Barneveld girls basketball team at
four different venues when they
played at state tournaments,” said Rita
Zander. She has been at the scorer’s
table for thirty-plus years for several high school sports, including girls
and boys basketball and girls volleyball, where she keeps track of the
clock and Brian Walker is the scorer.
She has no strong preference
among locations, be it the UW Field
House, the Kohl Center, the Alliant
Energy Center, or the Resch Center in
Green Bay, at least not that she’s willing to put out there. She’s been at all
these locations and says they are all
different in their special ways.
In fact, Rita talks about being impartial during the games, not
talking about anything aside from the
game.
“I wasn’t on the books until all
our kids were out of high school,” she
said. “It’s altogether different watching a game and scoring a game. I
want to know where the basketball is
all the time because that’s where the
next potential point is coming from
and I need to get that point marked
down in the book.”
She can’t allow herself to be
a cheerleader for the home team, at
least not during the games.
“You have to keep an even keel;
you have to remain neutral. I can’t get
highs and lows during the game,” she
said.
Rita lives in rural Brigham
with her son and daughter-in-law, but
is most often seen at the scorers’ table in the Barneveld School District
gymnasium.
She usually travels to away
games, too, and of course to playoff
games. She enjoys driving, but has
from time to time ridden the team
bus.
This all started when Rita was

She stepped into the position when
the previous person was killed in the
1984 tornado.
“I do it because I really, really
enjoy doing it,” she said. “And I really, really, really enjoy working with
Brian Walker. He scores in volleyball
and I run the clock. It’s the other way
around during basketball.”
There are official scorers at
each game and usually it is the person representing the home team who
has that role. If there is a question as
to who has the ball or who has fouled
out, that sort of thing, the floor referees may come to the scorers’ table to
get help.
Rita has been put in that role a
number of times partly because of the
way she marks the books, beginning
with the initial jump ball.
“It happens a lot,” she said.
How long will Rita Zander continue to be a landmark at Barneveld
basketball and volleyball games?
She’s worked out an agreement
with school officials that if they see
she is not doing a great job, she expects them to tell her that, and she’ll
step aside.
Even though the score keeper
does not make any of the calls during
the game, at some games that person
does have a black and white striped
shirt.
And what she has in her books
influences some evening outcomes
and has an impact on record books
for decades to come.

Squirrels are impatient
animals. They don’t always
wait for acorns or hazelnuts
to fall, but go right to the
source and pick them from
the twigs.
Small oak twigs are too flimsy for a gray squirrel
weighing more than a pound to crawl out on to get some
acorns. Rather, the squirrel will cut the entire twig and
down comes a few leaves, twigs and several acorns.
This cutting activity is noticeable each fall under
some large oak trees. It resembles the aftermath of a
wind storm that knocked down dozens of twigs. The
end of each twig is not broken, but has gnaw marks left
by a squirrel’s teeth.
Once the twig is on the ground, the squirrel can
move about freely, grab the acorn and either eat it or
cache it for a later meal.

“Oh my Goodness!! Who knew that fresh apples, crescent roll
dough, and citrus soda could make such a wonderful treat!”
INGREDIENTS:
2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
2 (10 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Mountain Dew ™
DIRECTIONS:
1.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease
a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2.
Cut each apple into 8 wedges and set aside. Separate the
crescent roll dough into triangles. Roll each apple wedge in crescent
roll dough starting at the smallest end. Pinch to seal and place in
the baking dish.
3.
Melt butter in a small saucepan and stir in the sugar and
cinnamon. Pour over the apple dumplings. Pour Mountain Dew™
over the dumplings.
4.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until
golden brown.

Boys Cross Country Travels to Reedsburg

On Saturday the 27th, the Wisconsin
Heights/Barneveld boys cross country team traveled to Reedsburg. Freshmen Jack Hazen competed on the varsity team for this meet. Jack ran
a time of about 21 minutes, and ended up placing 75th on Saturday. Sophomore Matthew Meyers also ran a close race in time with Jack Hazen.
Matthew finished the race with a time of 21 minutes and 15 seconds. Jack Hazen and Matthew
Meyers both ran very good races at Reedsburg on
Saturday. Jack Hazen said, “we just need to keep
up running fast through the rest of the season.

Nate Francque is an outgoing senior at
Barneveld High School. His attitude and work
ethics brings a unique personality into the
school environment. He works hard in both academics and sports. Nate’s favorite subject is
math and his favorite teacher is Mr. Wood. Nate
plays football and baseball. Outside of school
and sports, he likes to hang out with friends
and family. After high school, he wants to go to
college and start a family. Nate is a good student that will be missed from BHS after graduation. Good luck to Nate with the rest of his
senior year and wherever his future takes him.

On September 30th the Barneveld girls
volleyball team won an intense game against the
Albany Comets. The girls won in four matches;
25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20. Junior Taylor Owens
led the team in kills with 11 as she also led the
team in digs with 12. Junior Kelsee Fargo led the
team with 21 assists and five aces. Senior Kassy
Bauman was right along with Kelsee with five
aces and Taylor led the team with eight aces. Our
Barneveld girls fought hard and didn’t give up
and that showed throughout the four matches.
Deafening Defeat

Last Friday’s home game against the Deforest Norskies was disappointing for the Mount
Horeb/Barneveld Vikings, but a key point in the
season. As the kickoff came, there was little to
no energy among the players and the fans. The
Mount Horeb/Barneveld defense began the
game sluggishly allowing two straight scores
in the first half. The MHB offense continually
made costly penalties and mistakes throughout the game that ended key drives. The offense seemed to gain some energy near the
end of the first quarter and scored, but after
that the energy seemed to drop off again. The
score at half was Deforest-14, Mount Horeb/
Barneveld-7. The second half was a defensive
battle as neither of the offenses could get anything going. The Norskies never crossed mid
field into Viking territory and the Viking offense
ended drives in the red zone four times. As the
game clock struck 0, the score stood with Deforest being 14 and Mount Horeb/Barneveld 7.

fun, three match game. Taylor Owens led the
team with 12 kills and 9 digs. Rachel Slaney had

three matches with an overall total of 5. The volleyball team gave it their all and it paid off well,

New WI Voter Photo ID Rules – Major Changes
Iowa County Clerk Greg Klusendorf urges voters in Iowa County to plan now to make sure they have the
acceptable photo ID to vote beginning with the November 4, 2014 Election.
Most voters already have one of the types of photo ID required to vote.

On Election Day, voters must provide one of the following photo IDs before they can cast a ballot:
- Wisconsin Driver’s License
- Wisconsin State ID Card
- Military ID Card
- U.S. Passport
* The above IDs are still valid if expired after the date of the most recent general election which was November
6, 2012.
The following forms of photo ID are also acceptable, but must be unexpired:

A Certificate of Naturalization
Driver’s License Receipt issued by the WI DOT
ID issued by a federally recognized Wisconsin Indian Tribe
A photo ID issued by a Wisconsin accredited university or college (please contact your
Local Clerk, the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board or your college or
university for specifications)
* An acceptable photo ID is not required to include a current address.
If you do not have a valid WI Driver’s License or WI State ID you can receive a free WI State ID from your
local Department of Motor Vehicles if you specifically request a free ID for voting purposes. Please contact
your local DMV or your local clerk for more information.
Absentee Voting
During in-person absentee voting, voters must present photo ID just like on Election Day.
In-person absentee voting can begin the third Monday before the election, and must end at 5 p.m. or the close
of business, whichever is later, the Friday before the election. Contact your local municipal clerk for absentee
voting hours.
When voters request an absentee ballot by mail, they must include a photocopy of their photo ID with the
request, or the ballot cannot be mailed. Voters who are “indefinitely confined” because of age, illness, infirmity
or disability and voters in care facilities may have their absentee witness verify their identity instead of
providing a copy of their photo ID. Active members of the U.S. Armed Services who are away from home are
also exempt from the photo ID requirement.

County Clerk’s office at the Iowa County Courthouse, 222 N. Iowa Street, Dodgeville, 608-935-0399.
Voters are also encouraged to visit the Wisconsin Government Accountability’s Voter ID website
