STO P IN
NATURALLY SPEAKING
By Jerry Davis
Anyone who has glanced at Aldo Leopold’s “A Sand County
Almanac” and the numerous illustrations by Charles W. Schwartz
probably remembers the black-capped chickadee perched on a
much-used splitting wedge hammered into the Good Oak.
Later in the book another chickadee illustration appears. This
bird is perched on a dead limb stub, looking down at its leg band,
65290. These non-migratory birds are so common that most people recognize this tolerant bird who sometimes sits on a person’s
shoulder, or on a cap’s bill. Chickadees have good memories as
far as birds are concerned. They remember food caches and even
food quantities for days or weeks. Few people would choose a
word other than cute to describe a chickadee with its oversized
round head, tiny body, and an insatiable curiosity. This bird’s
group name is hard to come by, but Michel Perry, the humorist
columnist used hustle (he says he just made it up) to describe these
birds in a recent column. A weak reference was made to banditry
by someone else, denoting the black head markings. Body temperatures can be a concern for such a small birds during Wisconsin’s subzero mornings. Remarkably, chickadees can lower their
body temperatures as much as 10-12 degrees Centigrade during
cold winter nights. So don’t mess with the black-capped chickadee. They have too many friends.

THE RECIPE BOX
Slow Cooker
Chicken Taco Soup
Prep Time: 15 Minutes...Cook Time: 7 Hours
Ready In: 7 Hours 15 Minutes...Servings: 8
“A hearty combination of beans, corn, tomatoes, and taco seasonings, slow
cooked with shredded chicken. Top each bowl with Cheddar cheese, sour
cream, and crushed tortilla chips. Made mostly of canned ingredients, this
tasty soup lets the slow cooker do the work so you don’t have to!”
INGREDIENTS:
1 onion, chopped
1 (16 ounce) can chili beans
1 (15 ounce) can black beans
1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle beer
2 (10 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with green chilies, undrained
1 (1.25 ounce) package taco seasoning
3 whole skinless, boneless chicken breasts
shredded Cheddar cheese (optional)
sour cream (optional)
crushed tortilla chips (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
1.
Place the onion, chili beans, black beans, corn, tomato
sauce, beer, and diced tomatoes in a slow cooker. Add taco seasoning, and stir to blend. Lay chicken breasts on top of the mixture, pressing down slightly until just covered by the other ingredients. Set slow cooker for low heat, cover, and cook for 5 hours.
2.
Remove chicken breasts from the soup, and allow to cool
long enough to be handled. Stir the shredded chicken back into
the soup, and continue cooking for 2 hours. Serve topped with
shredded Cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and crushed
tortilla chips, if desired.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an American federal holiday
marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed
on the third Monday of January each year, which is around
the time of King's birthday, January 15. The floating holiday
is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday
Act.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in
the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial
discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a
federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into
law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first,
some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it
alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was
officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
The idea of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday was
promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations. After
King’s death, United States Representative John Conyers (a
Democrat from Michigan) and United States Senator Edward
Brooke (a Republican from Massachusetts) introduced a bill
in Congress to make King’s birthday a national holiday. The
bill first came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives
in 1979. However, it fell five votes short of the number needed
for passage. Two of the main arguments mentioned by opponents were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be
too expensive, and that a holiday to honor a private citizen
would be contrary to longstanding tradition (King had never
held public office). Only two other people have national holidays in the United States honoring them: George Washington
and Christopher Columbus.
Soon after, the King Center turned to support from the corporate community and the general public. The success of this
strategy was cemented when musician Stevie Wonder released
the single “Happy Birthday” to popularize the campaign in
1980 and hosted the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981.
Six million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law, termed by a 2006 article in The Nation as
“the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history.”
At the White House Rose Garden on November 2, 1983,
President Ronald Reagan signed a bill, proposed by Representative Katie Hall of Indiana, creating a federal holiday to honor King. It was observed for the first time on January 20, 1986.

First Baby of 2015 at Upland Hills Health
Unlike last year, staff in the
Birthing Unit at Upland Hills Health
had to wait patiently for the arrival of
the first baby of the New Year. He arrived Monday, January 5.
Congratulations goes out to
Dean and Liana Mericka, parents of
the first baby born at Upland Hills
Health in the New Year! Everett Griffin Mericka, was born just before 10
in the morning, weighing 8 lbs, 1 oz.
The proud father said, “We’ve
had a lot to celebrate this year, our
marriage, buying a farm and our first
child.” Little Everett is the first baby
for Liana and Dean, and the first baby
of 2015 for Upland Hills Health.

Local Students Test Gardening
Techniques in Community
7th grade students from Barneveld Middle
School have started a project to address the
lack of access to fresh produce in Barneveld.
The main idea of this project is to have students
use their math and science skills along with
aspects of the engineering design process and
technology tools to solve a problem in their
community. The students have come up with
the idea of helping community members grow
fresh produce on their own properties. Students
would like to build garden boxes, vertical
gardens and tower gardens in order to solve the
issue of lack in fresh produce. We are looking
for people to volunteer their yards, decks, or
flower beds for students to build various garden
structures and plant produce for spring. If you
would like to be part of this opportunity or have
further questions, please contact Jordyn Whitish
or Karley Moore at the emails listed below.

Eagles Fall to Lancaster
By: Wes Williams
Edited By: Samantha Schult
Last Friday night the Eagles played Lancaster in a non-conference matchup. The first half was
back and forth resulting in a 20-20 tie at half. Lancaster came out hot at the start of the second half
pulling out a small lead. The Eagles ended the third
quarter with a run; the score was now 34-35. The
fourth quarter was full of excitement; the Flying Arrows took the lead with just over a minute to go causing the Eagles to foul to try to save time. The Flying
Arrows capitalized on the free throw chances and
pulled away at the end to seal a 55-49 win for the visiting team. The high scorers for the Eagles were Matthew Myers with 17 and Brycen Sorensen with 13.

Our Valued Walnut Trees
“is it worth it to advertise in
your local newspaper?”
For many small businesses that sell to consumers,
yes it is — provided you think of your local newspaper as
not being the major-metro newspaper but the local community or suburban newspaper, where the audience is targeted, the ad rates lower, and the staff motivated to place your
marketing message with more of a personal touch.

Jerry Davis
One might ask why there are so
many black walnut trees, particularly
young walnuts, in southwest Wisconsin’s deciduous forests today. They are
common in other places, as well, including fencerows, abandoned fields,
and roadsides.
Black walnuts are native to our
area, meaning they belong here and
are adapted to the climate and weather we have each summer and winter.
In the past, there were fewer
black walnut trees, but the tree’s habit
of stump sprouting, prolific seed production some years, great seed dispersal and seed planting by squirrels has
increased their spread and frequency
significantly.
There are actually two walnut
species in this area, the black walnut
and the white walnut, more commonly called butternut.
Butternuts are extremely susceptible to a fungal canker (blight)
disease. Black walnuts are not susceptible but have a different disease
problem. Most butternuts have been
logged or died of the blight (canker).
The young trees usually hang on long
enough to produce a few seeds and
then they die.
In the 1930s, black walnut
seedlings were a popular species for
landowners to plant when they were
sometimes given away free. About
40 years ago walnut plantations were
heavily planted too. All of that planting led to greater seed sources of nuts
for squirrels to spread.
Walnuts react as a weedy, pioneer
Small limbs of black walnuts are sometimes cut and split for firewood even
though their heat value is less than 80 percent that of white oak.
species, coming in where there are
openings in forests. Then they spread
quickly and easily to nearby areas.
Black walnuts are susceptible
to fire when prairies and forests are
burned, but the stumps may resprout.
Walnuts have become, in the
minds of foresters, the most valued
hardwood in North America.
Comparing a white oak tree
and a black walnut tree often shows
the walnut being worth at least twice
as much as an oak. In rare cases, that
could be as much as 10 time, even
more, than the oak.
Problems arise with this added
value, too.
Butternut blight is not a problem, but there is a walnut disease in
western U.S. that does great damage
to walnut forests. It has not appeared
in Wisconsin yet. Thousand Cankers
Disease is caused by twig beetles and
associated fungi, which eventually
weaken or kill the tree.
Black walnuts are not a state tree
of any state.
