FOREWORD FROM THE PHF PRESIDENT
WELCOME!
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with great joy and huge satisfaction that I would like to invite you on behalf of the Polish Handball Federation to Men’s European
Handball Championship EHF EURO 2016, which will take place in Poland from 15 till 31 January 2016.
In June 2012, we were nominated as the host country for EHF EURO 2016 at the EHF Congress in Monte Carlo, which marked the
beginning of a new stage in the development of handball in Poland. Behind us also are the first experiences, which were the organization of the Women’s 17 EHF EURO in 2013 and Men’s 18 EHF EURO in August 2014, and before us a real feast of handball tournament
which will be EHF EURO 2016 in Poland.
For the Polish Handball Federation is a great honour to take on the organization of this highly prestigious event. For this purpose, we
established a specialized department responsible for the preparation and organization of the European Championships EHF EURO
2016, under the leadership of Vice President PHF Mr. Marcin Herra, an experienced manager, former head of the company PL2012
responsible for the organization of the European Football Championship UEFA EURO 2012 in Poland.
Men’s European Handball Championship EHF EURO 2016 will be held in four big Polish cities – modern European metropolises, where
all participants will have an opportunity to experience not only traditional Polish hospitality, but also intense sport emotions in magnificent sport venues.
Kraków and the Małopolska Region, Wrocław, Gdańsk and Katowice are also places with a rich and interesting history, where handball has always played an important role in the sport activity of local inhabitants and has a remarkable tradition at club level.
The huge popularity of handball in Poland, as well as modern sport venues and their record-breaking capacity allow us to think that
the upcoming European Championship can become an exceptional event in many aspects.
We hope and strongly believe that Men’s European Handball Championship EHF EURO 2016 will elevate national and European
handball to the highest organisational, sport and promotional level and that EHF EURO 2016 will break records in all of these fields.

PREVIOUS MEN’S EHF EURO
HISTORY
When the Men’s EHF EURO 2016 throws off in Poland in January 2016, it will be the 11th nation to
host the 11th edition of the European Handball Federation’s flagship national team event.
Handball is one of the most popular sports in Poland with thousands of fans regularly coming to
the arenas for support when the national team or the most famous club sides take to the court.
A cumulative audience of 205 million watched on TV in Poland when the national team played at
the EHF EURO 2014. The fans from VELUX EHF Championships League Participants, Vive Tauron
Kielce and Orlen Wisla Plock, are famous for their passion and the electrifying atmosphere they
create, wherever their teams play.

HOST CITY KRAKÓW
Krakow, located in the south of Poland on the
shores of the Vistula River, is the capital of the
Malopolska region and a city with a thousandyear-old tradition.It covers an area of 327
square kilometres and is the home to more
than 750,000 people.
Being the former residence of the Polish kings
and the nation’s capital until 1596, it is nowadays an important European metropolis.
Krakow’s Old Town is a unique treasure boasting works of art, historical monuments and
historic buildings, representing almost all architectural styles from the Middle Ages to present day.
For hundreds of years the main market square
has remained the heart of the city. It is the
largest town square of medieval Europe, preserved in unchanged form since 1257 and included in the first list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites already in 1978.
For 600 years now, from the tower of St Mary’s
Basilica, every hour the bugle call, played to
the four winds, can be heard. Additionally, the
Cloth Hall – the medieval market hall located

in the middle of the Market Square – is one of
the most recognisable Polish monuments.
Krakow also boasts the second oldest institution of higher education in Central Europe:
the Jagiellonian University. The Wawel Royal
Castle has been overlooking the city for centuries, with the beginnings of the residence of
the Polish kings on the Wawel Hill date back to
mid-11th century.
Apart from the monuments of the Old Town,
Kazimierz, as a space of century-long coexistence of Christian and Jewish culture, filled
with Jewish monuments of global importance,
continues to amaze. It is a district full of cosy
cafes, restaurants and live music pubs.
Krakow is also a city vibrating with cultural
life. In 2000 it was selected as a European Culture Capital. Every year, nearly 100 festivals
and other cultural events take place here. It is
also a city of modern museums, where visitors
can come face to face with history.
The capital of the Malopolska region also
boasts a rich offer for sports and recreation
enthusiasts.

Europe with close to unlimited potential. With
a capacity of 15,000 it is the biggest hall in Poland and its benefits go way beyond its size
and multi-functionality.
The arena contains the latest technological
solutions with the most advanced stage and
multimedia systems, meeting and exceeding the expectations of any event organiser or
spectator. Only a few halls can offer such highly developed infrastructure, making Krakow
Arena a centre for sporting events, Polish and
international television productions and home
to huge spectacles for thousands of people.
On the outside an unprecedented and unique
LED screen on the building elevation surrounds the external construction of the main
hall over the length of more than 500 metres.
The multifunctional nature of the Krakow Arena allows it to stage on its premises at least

different sports disciplines: badminton,
boxing, curling, acrobatic and artistic gymnastics, futsal, hockey, basketball, track and
field, figure skating, volleyball, handball, martial arts, extreme sports, tennis, table tennis,
equestrian competitions and sports dancing

competitions. It is already certain that the Krakow Arena will host the Men’s Volleyball World
Championship in 2014 as well as the European
Handball Federation’s flagship national team
event, the Men’s EHF EURO 2016.
Small and big, something for everyone
The entire complex is made up of two halls –
a bigger and a smaller one. The main hall is
first of all a huge arena. Specators are seated
on three different levels, and seating can also
be installed on the court. The possibility to
freely configure the auditorium is among the
features that will satisfy the most demanding
international organisers of any event. In addition, for the needs of shows, the construction
of the main hall roof has been reinforced and
rigging was installed here to enable a quick
and convenient installation of hanging stage
equipment weighing up to 60 tons. Convenient
backstage facilities for athletes and performers, expanded multimedia systems, as well as
good acoustics have already convinced many
of those planning future events in Krakow.

HOST REGION MAŁOPOLSKA
The Malopolska Region is located mainly in
the Malopolska Plateau and partially in the
Western Carpathian Mountains. It boasts exceptional riches of beautifully formed terrain,
such as the highest mountain chains in Poland: the Tatras.

there are as many as 14 sites protected as
world cultural and natural heritage situated in
the region. This is more than any other region
in Poland offers.
It is also at Malopolska where the valley of the
Vistula, Poland’s largest river, runs from west
to east, and where major transport routes,
from east to west and from north to south, intersect.
Over three million people live in Malopolska,
representing various ethnic groups, including
a small number of Ruthenians, Armenians,
Romani, Slovaks, Ukrainians and Jews. To
quote an old proverb: “Every country has its
own customs; every village has its own song.”
In other words the Małopolska Region is characterised by its unique richness and variety.
Luckily some customs are still preserved and
looked after in many places despite the forces
of globalisation.
There are six national parks, 11 landscape
parks, 10 areas of protected landscape, 88 nature reserves, and over 2,000 monuments of
nature in the Malopolska region.
The land is considered the cradle of the Polish
state. Dozens of castles, numerous villages,
towns and cities with their historical urban
layout and ancient development, accompanied
by nearly 1,000 churches, shrines and manor
houses have been preserved.

Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia and the
fourth biggest city in Poland, is not only a
thriving economic centre but also one of the
country’s most beautiful towns.

Its magnificent market square and riverside
boulevards along the river Oder invite for a
walk at any time of the day or even at night,
when bridges and monuments are gorgeously
illuminated.
The city’s location on a dozen of Oder islands,
on the banks of the river and on the banks of
its tributaries gave Wroclaw the nickname
“Venice of the North”.
The openness and hospitability of Wroclaw’s
citizens are proven again and again by the
growing numbers of tourists who visit the city.
In touch with different cultures
Wroclaw is situated at the crossroads of the
main European North – South and East – West
thoroughfares, and in its 1000-year-long history it belonged to several empires and nations, including the Czech followed by the Austrian empire and the Kingdom of Prussia.
Since the end of the World War II it belongs to
Poland – and what makes the city unique is its

the islands the most famous one is Most Grunwaldzki. One hundred years ago the bridge was
the latest in terms of construction technology.
The bridges are also the special symbols of
Wroclaw’s mentality as it combines tradition
with the modern lifestyle of a 21st century city.
Wroclaw’s Centennial Hall is a unique venue in
Poland, in which history harmoniously interacts with modernity.
It was designed by Max Berg, an outstanding city architect, between 1911 and 1913 and
swiftly recognised as one of the top masterpieces of 20th century architecture.

CENTENNIAL HALL
Berg assumed that the hall was to serve the
citizens of Wroclaw and the visitors to Lower
Silesia’s capital city, and it continues to perform in this function successfully.
In January 2016 the Centennial Hall will host
the Men’s European Handball Championship
2016.
Its multi-purpose space, the unusual structure, its unique and spacious location represent just a few of its strengths.
The Centennial Hall complex currently is one
of the most desired venues among domestic
and foreign organisers of major exhibitions,
conferences, cultural, sport and congress
events. The Hall’s inscription to the UNESCO
World Heritage List in 2006 further emphasised the rank of this facility.
Local, domestic and international sporting
events are held regularly in the Centennial
Hall. The main deck’s space may be arranged
to serve as a court for team sports such as
handball, volleyball and basketball as well as
a tennis court or a boxing arena. The Centennial Hall seats up 6,500 people.

HOST CITY GDAŃSK
Although others may be similar, Gdansk is a
one of a kind city. An unusual location and over
a thousand years of history ensure that Gdansk
is distinctive, determined and has an established position on the European landscape. At
the same time it is a city which still hides a lot
of mysteries and has this something special
which cannot be mistaken.
There is no Gdansk without freedom. Courage,
freshness and freedom, this is a truly a tradition of the city. The residents’ appreciation of
the city has formed unique genius loci over the
centuries.
You can feel it among the tenement houses
and among the shipyard cranes, on beautiful
sand beaches and in post-industrial rooms,
parks and tunnels, in Gdansk freedom is omnipresent, almost tangible.
It inspires and transforms both the space and
people. The residents are brave, involved, passionate and creative. Modern Gdańsk is open
to new ideas, moving with the times, an originator of events and always surprising.

The city of freedom changes its face from
day to day. Not long ago it was in the centre
of events that changed the history of Europe.
August 1980, a strike in the Gdańsk Shipyard
led by Lech Walesa and creation of Solidarity,
a trade union, which was a social movement
that captured the imagination of millions.
Precisely these events gave a great impulse to
the freedom movements around the world and
let people believe that impossible is after all
possible.
Today’s Gdańsk is a modern European metropolis with an economy based on knowledge,
actively developing centre of culture, science,
entertainment and sport. It is also an attractive tourist destination and the world capital
of amber.
The city is also famous also for its breath taking PGE Arena and Ergo Arena, and hosting
sporting events such as the UEFA EURO 2012,
Volleyball European Championship 2013 and
Volleyball World Championship in 2014.

ERGO ARENA
Welcome to the world of great concerts, sports
events, congresses, fairs and cosy business
meetings. Welcome to a world full of emotions,
in the heart of the Tricity metropolis, right at
the coast of the Baltic Sea, directly neighbouring the beach and coastal boulevards.
The building is 30 metres tall and has 4.3 hectares of usable floor space, comprising seven
storeys. It is sitting on a monolithic concrete
slab, with its roof structure based on four
space pylons.
Construction began in 2007 and lasted until
May 2010. The ceremonial opening of the hall
took place on 18 August 2010, welcoming over
10,000 spectators to see the friendly opening
match between the national teams of Brazil
and Poland in men’s volleyball.
Ergo Arena, due to its modern construction,
can host up to 11,000 people, and when standing places are included, even 15,000 people.
This allows the organisation of a whole spectrum of sports competitions. Volleyball, bas-

ketball, handball and martial arts account for
quite a standard set of disciplines. Yet the ability to host ice hockey, motorsports, and even
windsurfing events, makes this place unique.
Thanks to the modern hall, Tricity has finally become an attractive spot on the Polish
concert map. Ergo Arena has proudly hosted
such stars as Lady Gaga, Ozzy Osbourne,
Rammstein, Sting, Michael Buble, Iron Maiden, Jose Carreras, Erykah Badu and Jean
Michel Jarre.
The list of sporting events at the arena is long
and impressive: IAAF World Indoor Championships SOPOT 2014, FIVB men’s volleyball finals, CEV European Championships men’s in
volleyball, European Championships in table
tennis, Freestyle Motocross World Championship NIGHT of the JUMPs, Poland national team games in volleyball, basketball and
handball and since the 2010/11 season, Ergo
Arena has been home to the regular practices
and matches of three professional basketball
and volleyball clubs.

HOST CITY KATOWICE
Katowice is a city in Silesia, located in the
southwest of Poland on the Kłodnica and Rawa
rivers (tributaries of the Oder and the Vistula
respectively). Katowice is a capital of the Silesia region and is in the Silesian Highlands,
about 50 km north of the Silesian Beskids
(part of the Carpathian Mountains) and about
100 km southeast of the Sudetes Mountains.
It covers an area of 165 square kilometres and
has a population of over 300,000 people.

aspiring, economically sound, creative, ambitious, modern and avant-garde city and which
draws on these two complementary images.
“Katowice. For a change” draws attention to
the current transformation process which the
capital of the Silesian province, together with
the entire region, is undergoing.
The city of Katowice, which was first recorded
in 1598 but the history of districts such as Dąb
or Bogucice dates back even further, has completely changed its face within last few years.
In the past the capital of Silesian County was
associated with heavy industry, today Katowice
is a European city in connection with tradition.
These changes cannot be compared to those
of any other municipal area in Poland. They
are manifested especially in the economy,
where traditional branches are being replaced
with new fields, where innovation and highly
developed technologies are put to the fore and
where there is a significant shift from the industrial zone to modern services such as IT.
Nowadays Katowice’s face is a result of government activities over the past number of
years, which has aimed to emphasise its perfect location, as well as economic, administrative and intellectual potential.
The city’s promotional motto is “Katowice. Dla
Odmiany” (Katowice. For a change). Its logo
“Katowice. For a change” is also an expression
of strong conviction that Katowice, with its innovative face, is a city worth discovering. It is a
place in which new music (OFF Festival Katowice and Tauron Nowa Muzyka) coexists with
avant-garde art forms (Katowice Street Art
Festival and Silesian design) and bold archi-

tectural solutions (on one hand Spodek Arena
and the new home of the Silesian Museum,
built underground on the site of a former coal
mine, and on the other hand the new seat of
the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra - NOSPR).
Katowice is a city of an inspiring “crash”,
merging history with the present, tradition
with modernity, while proudly alluding to its
industrial and Silesian identity.
Spodek Arena, named for its resemblance to
a flying saucer, is a multipurpose arena complex in Katowice, Poland, opened in 1971 and
is widely recognised domestically as well as
internationally, thanks to its unique architecture.
Spodek arena was recently renovated (in 2011).
Nowadays is the only arena in Poland with full
air conditioning system. After the renovation,
Spodek arena has a new rounded LED screen,
suspended on the ceiling, additional lighting
system, a new monitoring system connected
with a fire-fighting system, new doors and windows together with new information boards
for all sectors. Spodek fascinates passers-by

with a multicolour illumination that stresses
its characteristic architectural structure.
Spodek is a major contribution to the cultural
significance of Katowice in Poland, especially
for the younger generations. It has also been
used as an unofficial logo for the city on posters promoting redevelopment in Katowice. The
arena is home to HC GKS Katowice ice hockey
club in the winter months.
Aside from the main dome, the complex includes a gym, an ice rink, a hotel, a swimming pool with two saunas, as well as three
large car parks. It is one of the largest indoor
venues of its kind in Poland, with a capacity of
11,000 people.
It hosts many important cultural and business events and music concerts are especially
common non-sport events.
Over the last 40 years it has played host to
many world-famous acts, including Tina Turner, Metallica and Depeche Mode, as well as
hosting music festivals such as Rawa Blues
Festival, Metalmania and Odjazdy.

The inspiration for the colour of the logo were the Polish national colors: white and red. The gold
colour refers to victory and nobility. The design has also referenced the value associated with handball: its energetic nature, speed, dynamics and fight, which is so characteristic for this discipline. In
addition, the logo refers to the most natural element of handball - to hands symbolizing openness,
welcome, partnership. As a result, a symbol was created, which is clearly connected with what is
most important in sport, and in particular handball: the principles of fair play and, above all, with
intense emotions for which handball, especially performed by the Polish representation, is famous.
The official slogan of the Polish tournament is: FEEL THE EMOTIONS.
LOGO – CONSISTENCY OF PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES
In addition to promoting the values associated with handball, modern logo of the EHF EURO 2016
tournament is the cohesive element of all communication and promotional activities carried out
by Polish Handball Federation. This is crucial for the area of image design and sales - it must be
attractive and expressive. For handball communities in Poland, but also in Europe, modern logo for
the next several months will confirm that the championship in 2016 will be consistent with the true
spirit of handball.
COMPOSITE LOGO – A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HOST CITIES AND THE HOST REGION
The most important partners of every big event are its hosts - in the case of EHF EURO 2016 these
are the four cities and one region. European standard is the creation and effective use of the socalled composite logos, which is a natural connection between the championship and main partners logos. This mechanism has also been used in the project EHF EURO 2016. Krakow, Wroclaw,
Gdansk, Katowice and Malopolska Region will be presented on all the materials and communication projects thanks to the statement of two brands: modern tournament logo and logos of the cities and region. The championship partners will have benefits from effective promotional campaign
outreach: Polish and European market. On the other hand, Polish Handball Federation receives
additional support for the involvement of local communities to build and develop the sales potential
for the upcoming championships.

SYMBOLISM
The symbol (graphic mark) presents a synthetic image of a player throwing a ball. It is
dynamic and full of expression. Additionally, it
may be seen as a hand. The 3D effect and colours used imitate gold, indirectly referring to a
medal and victory.
The symbol may stand alone in the brand visual identification system, both in positive and
in reverse.
