Intended Audience
Iowa Psychiatric Society
A District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association
Jointly Provided by:
The University of Iowa Roy J. and
Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine
Department of Psychiatry and The Iowa
Psychiatric Society
Psychiatrists are involved in
end-of-life care in a number of
capacities including providing
psychotherapeutic interventions to
the individual and family, treating
mental illness in the individual,
symptom palliation, helping
establish decisional capacity of the
individual regarding end-of-life
decisions, and providing caregiver
support. The early afternoon session
is designed to meet the Iowa Board of
Medicine requirement that primary
care physicians receive training in
end of life care, and tailored to the
specific needs of psychiatrists. It
will also be relevant to other mental
health professionals involved in endof-life care (social workers, nurses,
psychologists, counselors).
The third component of the program
is targeted specifically to psychiatrists
to ensure optimal participation in
the American Board of Psychiatry
and Neurology Maintenance of
Certification process as a means of
improving practice outcomes.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this
conference, the learner should be
able to:
• Describe the Adverse Childhood
Experiences (ACEs) study and its
implications for lifelong health, and
discuss the prevalence of ACEs in
Iowa.
• Identify risk factors for trauma in
military women, its health and
family/marital consequences, and
factors influencing military women’s
access to health care.
• Describe the heterogeneity of
trauma events and its implication for
posttraumatic stress severity.
• Describe implications of risk
factors and resiliency in traumaexposed military women.
• Specify core principles of a traumainformed approach to care, and
distinguish it from the traditional
human services paradigm.
• Describe the role of the psychiatrist
in the palliative care team and
treatment of common psychiatric
challenges at end-of-life.
• Differentiate psychopathology
from existential suffering.
• Identify ethical principles
applicable to physician aid-in-dying,
including palliative sedation.
• Demonstrate familiarity with the
rationale and background of the
American Board of Psychiatry and
Neurology Maintenance of
Certification (ABPN MOC) program.
• Describe the four part ABPN MOC
program components.
