Carver College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and The Iowa Psychiatric Society Psychiatrists are involved in end-of-life care in a number of capacities including providing psychotherapeutic interventions to the individual and family, treating mental illness in the individual, symptom palliation, helping establish decisional capacity of the individual regarding end-of-life decisions, and providing caregiver support. The early afternoon session is designed to meet the Iowa Board of Medicine requirement that primary care physicians receive training in end of life care, and tailored to the specific needs of psychiatrists. It will also be relevant to other mental health professionals involved in endof-life care (social workers, nurses, psychologists, counselors). The third component of the program is targeted specifically to psychiatrists to ensure optimal participation in the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Maintenance of Certification process as a means of improving practice outcomes.
