Godisstillspeakingandbecauseasaneverchangingcommunitythegiftsandskillsthatare
presentwithinourcommunitymaybedifferentatanypointintime.Nomatterhowwella
programworkedinthepast,ifthegiftsandskillsneededforthatprogramnolongerexistwithin
ourcongregationtheprogramoractivityprobablywon’tworkwellnow.Andviceversa,
somethingmaynothaveworkedinthepastbecausewelackedskillsthatarepresentnow.
Eachfallweinvitethecongregationtocompletetimeandtalentsheets.You’veprobablyfilledone
outbefore.Startthinking,startpraying,startlisteningforGod’svoice(alsocalleddiscerning)to

October 5th will be the day we celebrate World Communion Sunday,
remembering the many ways we are connected with brothers and
sistersaroundtheworld.Onthatday,Christiansaroundtheworldwill
share communion – remembering both the one who is our host and
rememberingthehugediversityofguestsatthetable.Come!Youare

Everyyear,onthefirstSundayinOctober,wereceivetheNeighborsinNeedOffering.Eachyear,
theproceedsofthisofferinggotowardanationalefforttoprovideeducationalprogrammingin
poorneighborhoodsaroundourcountry,programsthatempowerindependenceandself‐worth
onIndianReservationsaroundthecountry,andjusticeadvocacyworkwithlegislativebodies
aroundournation.Yourgifttothisofferingwillmakeadifferenceinplacesofhunger,fearand
impoverishment(ofbody,soulandspirit).Helpaneighbor!Givegenerouslytoneighborsinneed.

studyinthelibrary.Thisclasswilldiscussthepassagesofscripturethatarethebasisofthe
sermonatthe10:15worshipservice.JohnThompsonwillalsoleadaclassat9aminthefireside
roominBaxterHall.Thisclasswillbeabasicintroductiontotheology.Nopriorreading
necessary.Justcomeandexplorethemescentraltoourfaith.
OnWednesdaynightsstartingat6pminthelibrary,thereisanotheradulteducationopportunity.

Because of privacy concerns related to information available on the internet,
Edwards has chosen to remove the names of those for whom we are praying from
ouron‐linenewsletter.
We lift in joy those moments of celebration in our lives – anniversaries, births, and
marriages.Wecontinuetoprayforthoseinthehospital,thosewhoarehome‐bound,
andthosewhobattleillness.Weliftupthosewhogrievethelossofalovedoneand
remember those who carry heavy burdens. We trust that as we lift one another in
prayer,God’spresencebringsstrength,hopeandwholenesstousall.Amen.

Amanofquietconfidenceandintegrity,hewillbemissedbyhisfamilyand
friends.Agatheringtocelebratehislifeandsharememorieswasheldon
Saturday,September13atMcGilleyStateLineChapel,KansasCity,MO.Jim
wasborninWaterloo,IowatoLaneandKatherineAnderson.Hegraduated
fromWaterlooHighSchoolintheclassof'53andGrinnellCollegein1957.
HethenmovedtoDavenport,Iowatobeginhisworklife.Soonheobtained
hisappraisallicenseandenjoyedalongandfruitfulcareerasaself‐
employedrealestateappraiser,retiringin2003.Jimmethisfirstwife,
Carolyn,inMarchof1959andtheymarriedinAugustofthatyear.They
raisedthreechildren,livingtogetherhappilyuntilCarolyn'sdeathinearly2005.Jimthenmoved
toKansasCitytobenearhisfamily,andspentmanyhoursattendinghisgrandchildren'ssporting
events,recitalsandconcerts.HefoundloveagainandmarriedCherylDenslowinJanuary2007,
bringingcontinuedhappinesstohislaterlife.Jimtookupgolfearlyinlife,excellinginhighschool
andcollegeathletics,andco‐captainingtheGrinnellgolfteam.Golfremainedalifelongpassion
andhealwayshadaregularfoursomeorplaydateonthehorizon.JimwasalsoanAuxiliary
memberofSt.JosephMedicalCenterinKansasCity,andaregularvolunteerthere.In2008,he
joinedthePetsforLifeprogram,visitingpatientsatthehospitalwithhisdog.Inadditiontohis
parentsandfirstwife,CarolynAnderson,JimisprecededindeathbyhissisterElaineWeldon.Jim
issurvivedbyhiswife,CherylAndersonofKansasCity,Missouri;childrenLori(Jim)Stanziolaof
OverlandPark,Kansas,Jim(Laura)AndersonofLeawood,Kansas,andMark(Wendy)Andersonof
SanFrancisco,California;nephewDavid(Linda)WeldonofConroe,Texas;andgrandchildren

“Jesusdidn’tturnpeopleaway;neitherdowe.”Whenyou’regutsyenoughtomakesuchaclaim,it'snotalways
easytomakegoodonit.FollowingJesus’lead,theUnitedChurchofChriststrivestokeepdoorsopentoall.
Ourwelcomeembracesboththoseinourcongregationsandthoseoutsidethechurch,withwhomweworkfor
God’sjusticeandcompassion.Whoiswelcome?–God’schildrenofdifferentcultures,races,genders,ages,sexual
orientations, abilities, economic situations, and theological traditions. It isn’t always easy to be so open. Each
UCCcongregationprayerfullydiscernsandexpresseshowwidetheirdoorsandarmsareopen.Somestateitthis
way,“Weareamulticulturalandmultiracial,openandaffirming,accessibletoall,andjustpeacechurch.”
Thefoundationforthisworkisthegraciousgiftoflove,freedomandjusticegiventousbyGod.Incovenantwith
oneanother,wearecalledtoseekadeeperbelovedcommunity.Byinvitingotherstoshareinthereconciling
work of God in the world we invite them into discipleship with Christ. We join faith with hospitality as bold
peopleofGod'swelcome.
