FINDING VOICE & RESILIENCY THROUGH TRAUMA We all know people who are facing - or who have faced - a tough illness or situation in life - perhaps the person who is struggling most is looking back at you from the mirror. However, resiliency of the human condition chooses to arrive in many forms. Leaning Into It Brene Brown, a well-known research professor, has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame. She has a powerful quote as follows: “Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” One might translate this as ‘leaning into the pain to find healing’ but however you might choose to define it, it supports the notion that we all have that capability of true resilience deep-seated within us. Looking Within At Pathways, resiliency presents itself in spoken words of self-discovery and meaning, whether in a one-on-one session or group class; it appears through the unspoken but powerful radiance of a smile long forgotten or tears of joy. Resiliency forms in the bond between participant and provider, the latter of whom often find their own clarity and resilience through their healing gift of care and presence. I spoke recently to people experiencing cancer and their caregivers. When I told them that Pathways provides equal care and priority to caregivers, the reactions were palpable, through glances exchanged between the couples, heads held high and in some cases, bowed. But to my eyes, these were reactions reflective of resiliency, not defeat. Collaborations, Engagement and Support We have taken intentional and impactful strides into communities surrounding Pathways by offering programs to growing senior residences, Renewing Life™ retreats to the breast cancer community and customized pilot programs to organizations serving at-risk youth and veterans. Our intent is to evaluate and determine how to best manage these and future collaborative efforts, exploring fee-based programs externally in order to keep the lights on for those we serve internally. With a careful eye on keeping the internal flame strong and glowing, we are encouraged by our expansion into the community. With your ability to support us, whether making connections or offering donations, we will move forward; we will proceed with a carefully balanced approach, because we believe long term impact and sustainability can come by Pathways creating that opportunity for resiliency through both the internal participant and external community lenses.
