Taekwondo National Championships held recently in Toronto. Congratulations to Skylar who has many national and international titles
already.
Envirothon 2014
This is an academic extra-curricular activity for students in grades 9 through 12, providing not only
environmental education, but also the chance to obtain many skills that are an asset for just
about any job. The Envirothon program has helped many students choose post-secondary paths
and careers. This year, there was a regional competition at Oak Hammock Marsh on April 25th and
a provincial competition held in Brandon on May 22nd – 24th .
Teams had to score high enough at the regionals to be able to compete at the provincials and of
course Shaftesbury successfully earned a spot! This year’s hard working regional team members
were Kayan Xu, Christine Vaccaro, Angie Liu, Carly McFall and Daniella Archer. Kayan could not
make the provincials due to being out of the country, so Lauren Bellows took her place to become
our theme expert. Teams prepare for the Envirothon competition by studying a set of prescribed
environmental topics on their own time, by attending learning sessions that are held one to two
times a week throughout the entire school year and by attending training workshops and field
trips that are held in both the spring and fall. Both regional and provincial Envirothon’s are
Science-Olympics style competitions that include a team field test and an oral presentation that is
presented to a panel of judges who are experts in the environmental industry. Questioning by
judges is rigorous and requires that students think quickly on their feet. Specific areas that are
tested on include soils, wildlife, aquatics, forestry and a theme topic that is different from year to
year. This year’s theme topic was Sustainable Agriculture. Shaftesbury scored very high in this
year’s provincial competition, coming in 4th place in this very rigorous competition. Despite being
short-handed the Shaftesbury team won an Award of Excellence for top marks. Two out of five of
the this year’s team members will be graduating, so SHS will be looking for new students to join
next year. Please check the announcements early in the fall for the date of the first meeting. For
more information about the Envirothon program, please contact Mrs. K. Stovel or Mrs. C.
Johnston.
Student Alliance
Shaftesbury’s Student Alliance group has made great contributions in the area of social justice this
year. From fundraising for the “Because I am a Girl Campaign” in support of girls’ education in developing countries and Halloween for Hunger to gather food resources for underprivileged people in
our home communities, to participating in awareness campaigns such as the Vow of Silence and Day
of Pink to promote understanding and support of marginalized people all over the globe. This group
has been very busy!
Several members also attended educational opportunities such as LEAF Manitoba’s conference for
women’s rights and the Manitoba GSA conference and helped to organized staff educational opportunities as well!
Thanks to much planning, as well as tremendous support from staff, administration, and members
of Shaftesbury’s hockey teams, Student Alliance finished the year with the pro human/gender rights
“NoH8 Campaign”, involving fantastic photography placed all around our school and posted on social media.
A very special thank you to the students, staff, and community members who have made all of
these wonderful things possible.
Have a wonderful summer!

Shaftesbury Students Play Jazz
Grade 12 students Matthew Kraljevic on alto sax and Julian Carneiro on piano, performed with
University of Manitoba Youth Jazz Collective under the direction of Derrick Gardner. The band rehearsed every Saturday from January to May 2014. The collective performed as the opening band
for the Asper Jazz Series at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on Saturday, May 3rd. This was quite an accomplishment for the students as there were eight members in this collective and two were from
Shaftesbury. They represented the school and the Shaftesbury music program well.
Matthew and Julian will be performing in The Senior Honor Jazz Band at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival
on Sunday, June 22nd, 2014 at the West End Cultural Centre under the direction of Greg Gatian.

SATS // SHARP
Shaftesbury’s Top Ten
Shaftesbury has ten certified radio operators ready to make ARISS radio contacts with astronauts
on the International Space Station using Shaftesbury’s new satellite tracking station.
Shaftesbury’s top ten from left to right are Jacob Booth (VE4RED), Mr. Deakin (VA4AMD), Jordan
Bowley (VE4JRB), Mr. Striemer (VE4SHS), Tara Towns (VE4TET), Daniel Gervais (VA4PRR), Kendra
McTavish (VE4MCT), Tushar Upreti (VE4FUN), Bryce Jenkins (VA4VBC), and Alex Porsch (VA4ELF).
Some of us have yet to receive official confirmation of these call signs. Special congratulations
are due to our three grade nine students (Jordan, Tara and Bryce) who were able to certify with
honors (a mark of 80% or over). Not an easy task.
SATS || SHARP Outreach Event at Laidlaw School
Students from the SATS || SHARP presentation team visited Laidlaw school on April 29th.
Presentations were made to grades 5 and 6 and grades 7 and 8 classes explaining our projects.
The Laidlaw students had many interesting questions for our team.
Thanks to the students and staff (Mr. Dunlop and Ms.
Lankester) of Laidlaw School for inviting us and for being
such good hosts. Hopefully we will be able to facilitate
ARISS contacts with PTSD schools in the near future
including Laidlaw.
Other SATS || SHARP Activities
Alpha Technologies Outreach
Alan Castell and the team from Alpha Technologies visited SHARP on Friday, May 9th. As you can
see from the photos below, Alan explained the workings of their radio controlled fixed and rotary
winged photography/videography platforms. Alan demonstrated first person view or FPV
technology while flying his aircraft in the classroom and outside the school. Students wearing
FPV goggles had a pilot's eye view including aircraft telemetry. The camera, radio transmitters
and antennas are small but the video quality is very good. The aerial photographs we saw of
Winnipeg landmarks such as the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Investors Group Field
were spectacular. Alan explained that the UHF system on their low flying radio controlled
aircraft worked at distances of over 20 kilometres. SHARP may be able to do better using a high
altitude balloon video platform and the high gain antenna and transceiver in the new ground
station.
Alan emphasized the safety features built into the system as well as Alpha Technologies safe
work procedures. This is especially important when operating multicopters which do not glide.
SHARP would like to use FPV technology on its RCs, drones and high altitude balloons (HABs). We
will work with Alpha Technologies to develop methods for training FPV pilots and work this
exciting technology into future SHARP projects.
Thank you Alan and the team from Alpha Technologies and Alpha Flying Circus for a
very informative presentation and a very exciting afternoon of flying!
Recovered RC Aircraft Flies Again
After falling 35 km from the stratosphere and gliding 35 km east crossing the Red River, the
SHARP 3.1 micro Stryker landed on the Crystal Springs Colony. It spent the winter buried in
snow. It was found on May 22nd and returned to the school.
After replacing the LiPo battery and after a few adjustments the Stryker was powered up and
today it was flown behind the school. Bowen, our Stryker pilot, reported that it flew as well as last
time; November 6th, 2013, just before going up on the SHARP 3.1 high altitude balloon.
Shaftesbury ARISS Telebridge Service (SATS) Update
On Sunday afternoon, May 25th, the SATS ground station successfully tracked its first satellite,
Saudisat 1C (SO-50) from Alaska to Cuba. A considerable amount of work still needs to be done to
complete the project but we are getting closer each day. We hope to make our first contact with
astronauts on the International Space Station in June. Also on Sunday, some students engaged in
an amateur radio direction finding (ARDF) activity. Using directional antennas attached to hand
held radios, students searched the area for a radio beacon called a fox. They were fox hunting! No
animals were actually harmed in the exercise.
There are some good opportunities to see the International Space Station early in June. One web
site you can use to see when the space station will be visible over Winnipeg is here http://
www.satview.org .
For our SHARP students who have a hand held amateur radio and a directional antenna, the
downlink and uplink frequencies for the ISS are 145.800 and 144.490 MHz. In satellite
telecommunication, a downlink is the link from a satellite down to one or more ground stations or
receivers, and an uplink is the link from a ground station up to a satellite. Tune your radio to
145.800 and point your directional antenna at the space station (the bright moving "star" in the
sky). The downlink frequency will vary due to Doppler shift but it should be correct when the ISS is
at maximum elevation. Do not transmit on 145.800. Packets may be heard on 145.825 MHz.
From the Library
The Shaftesbury Library would like to wish the 2014
Grads much success in their future!
The possibilities are endless!

Way to go Book Club!
This year’s Shaftesbury Book Club was a great success! We met
once a week during lunch and read six books.
We watched some of the films that were inspired from the novels
and had lively discussions,
including a collaboration with the St. Pauls’ students.
Thanks to Mrs. Bilyk and Mrs. McNabb-Davis for such a
wonderful year!
The following is an information letter on how “SEXTING” can be removed from various websites.
The information has been provided by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.
NEEDHELPNOW.CA
Who is the target audience for the website?
needhelpnow.ca is geared towards 13- to 17-year-old youth in Canada. In addition to needhelpnow.ca, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection has created the Self/Peer Exploitation Resource
Guide: School and Family Approaches to Intervention and Prevention. Created in consultation with
educators, law enforcement officers, crown prosecutors, child development experts, and psychologists, this guide is designed to assist school personnel and families in responding to self/peer exploitation incidents. For more information, please visit the website.
needhelpnow.ca is designed to provide information to youth who
have been impacted by a sexual picture/video being shared by
peers. The goal of the site is to provide teens with practical steps
they can take to regain control over the situation. This includes information about contacting websites/online services to request an
image/video be removed, guidance on involving a safe adult, the importance of self-care and recognizing when things have gone too far. The site outlines what information should be included when
contacting a website to request the removal of content, sample complaints and step-by-step information for contacting popular websites.
Youth need to be able to establish personal boundaries. Having well-defined personal boundaries
are what makes each person distinct in who they are and what they feel and think. It sends the message that you take responsibility for your life, how you treat others, and lets others know how you
expect to be treated. By establishing physical, emotional and mental standards for what you will and
will not do, you are protecting yourself from being taken advantage of or mistreated by others.
needhelpnow.ca is an initiative of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection Inc., a charitable organization dedicated to the personal safety of all children. Our goal is to reduce child victimization by
providing programs and services to the Canadian public.
