THE WEEKLY PINES Manly Selective Campus Northern Beaches Secondary College Academic Excellence Personal Best Giving Back to the Community Principal : Mr Tony Rudd Deputy Principals: Ms Cath Whalan Ms Barbara Bannister 10 October 2014 – Newsletter No. 30 From the Principal Staffing Update It is with great pleasure that I can now announce to our school community, following the Department of Education and Communities Merit Selection Process, that Mrs Bianca Hewes has been appointed to NBSC Manly Selective Campus as Head Teacher, Teaching and Learning. Mrs Hewes is currently a member of the English faculty at Davidson High School and will take up her appointment at our school from the beginning of 2015. This position was made available in our school through the retirement of Mrs Lyndall Hutton. Mrs Hewes has extensive experience teaching within the English faculty and is also very interested in students’ holistic learning through Project and Technology based learning environments. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Hewes to our community. In other staffing news, we have also recently been given approval to advertise for Head Teachers in both the Mathematics and Human Society and Its Environment Key Learning Areas. Again, these positions became available through the retirement of Mr Jim Johnston and Mr Rob Dean respectively. I anticipate that both of these positions will be filled for the start of 2015. Student Successes Following on from the successes of our HSC Drama students being selected for the DEC OnShow showcase of outstanding student performances, I can now report that Year 12 student Grace Shepherd has now been notified of her selection in the equivalent performance showcase for HSC Dance students – CallBack. Grace, who studied this subject at Mackellar Girls Campus, has been included in CallBack for all three components of her HSC practical; Core Composition, Core Performance and Major Study Performance. This is an outstanding result for Grace and augers well for her final result in that course for her HSC. In addition, congratulations need to be extended to another Year 12 student, Angela Zhao who recently completed the requirements for the Gold Award in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. To undertake this level of Duke of Edinburgh Award requires extremely high levels of commitment and dedication across a number of areas and to complete this while also preparing for the Higher School Certificate is a wonderful achievement. WotOpera Camp During 2013, a number of our students participated in the WotOpera program where, working with other schools from across the Sydney area and musicians and directors, the students wrote and performed in their own opera. From this program, Year 11 student Matthew Wilson was selected as one of 44 students from 22 schools across Australia to participate in a WotOpera camp held during the recent school holidays. Students on the camp composed two unique operas during the course of the week and performed them to family and friends. Matthew had a wonderful time at the camp, making new friends and no doubt learning more about the production and performance of operas. Fencing Classes These classes will continue again in Term 4 following the success of our junior students in various competitions during Term 3. Classes will be held on Monday afternoons from 3:30 until 4:30pm and Thursday mornings from 7:30 until 8:30am. The cost for tuition is $145 for the 7 week program at one session (morning or afternoon) per week. Lessons begin next week and students should wear T-shirt, tracksuit pants and trainers. All other equipment is supplied. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Manly Selective Campus 138 Abbott Road, North Curl Curl NSW 2099 Phone: 9905 3982 / Fax: 9905 7772 Email: [email protected] P&C website: www.manlypandc.org.au HSC Begins Finally, we are very much looking forward to welcoming our Year 12, G14, back to school on Monday for the start of their HSC examinations. Many of these students have been regular visitors to the school both in the recent holiday period where many teachers ran specific subject related revision courses and in the past four days for those final tips and tricks which might help them in the coming weeks. We are all very confident that the hard work and dedication shown by G14 over the last two years will pay rich dividends when results become available later in December. Tony Rudd, Principal From The Deputy Principals Welcome back to Term 4. The spring holidays are always delightful as everything is in bloom, new lambs and calves are on the ground and the grain crops will begin to fill over the next few weeks. This is an orchard I drove past in the holidays in full bloom. Welcome back to Term 4 – I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and are ready for a busy and enjoyable term. Best wishes to all Year 12 students for the HSC examinations which start next Monday. Students are reminded to ensure they arrive at least 30 minutes before the first English examination and 15 minutes prior to their other papers to ensure there is enough organisational time for the examinations to start on time. Year 10 students have a busy term ahead with end of year assessments in most subjects, presentation of their Independent Learning Project, the Problem Challenge, finalisation of their Volunteering and ABW or Work Experience. Further details regarding dates and expectations will be provided next week. Year 8 students have chosen Elective Subjects for Year 9 2015 during last term. The vast majority of students will be given their first choices although, since some courses will not be running, a few students will be allocated their back up choices. Further details regarding elective classes will be given to students later in the term once the timetable lines have been finalised. Cath Whalan Deputy Principal Years 8, 10, 12 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR HIGH ACHIEVERS The following students achieved High Distinction Awards in statewide competitions held last term: Year 11 have moved into their Year 12 studies and at a Year meeting on Thursday this week they received their print copy of the assessment schedule and Assessment Policy. It is important that families discuss the assessment schedule to be able to plan all activities for the next 12 months. A parent information evening will be held later this term. Years 7 and 9 are working away at their final term for the year. It is a time to consolidate the work covered so far to ensure any end of year assessments can be completed to the best of their ability. It is also a time for subject choices to be implemented for the following year or so. This process has been ongoing since last term but will be finalised in the next week or so. Spring is here; it’s a wonderful time to get everything shipshape before we think of next year’s extravaganza. What needs to be done? PAINTING The new extension has to be painted (brickwork, new formwork). FLOORING Ideally everything is going to be kept cleaner if we have flooring on the old concrete that can be easily swept. Any ideas? SORTING All costumes have been washed (many, many thanks to Bev Shoebridge for this) and are ready to be returned to their racks and rails. CLEANING Dust proof lungs are an advantage. The reward at the end is life affirming! If you would like to accept this challenge and join a coalition of the very willing, please come along. WORKING BEE Let’s make a start on Saturday 11 October from 10 to 4. Many hands can probably perform miracles in that time. Lunch will be provided. Please let me know if you are interested in coming for catering purposes. ABW is a community based self help program which now operates in all Australian States and provides programs at the School, State and National Level. Students in their thousands across Australia are developing a better understanding of business, its role in the building of a more prosperous nation and gaining a better appreciation of themselves, as the challenge of ABW stimulates them to rise above perceived limitations. Your role in making this happen is invaluable, but perhaps through your circumstance or organisation, you can do even more. Many organisations are making a contribution at the State or National level, through sponsorship, the provision of mentors, speakers or in kind sponsorship. If you would like to find out more about ABW and how you or your organisation can participate further, just photocopy the section below, complete and post to: Northern Beaches Secondary College, College Administration Centre, Harbord Rd, Freshwater NSW 2096 or fax to our office on 9939 6904. Phil is an engaging speaker with “real world” stories about those struggling with mental health issues and the help they need. In his talk Phil will be reflecting on some of his own experiences with ADHD as a Psychologist helping others but also his own "take" on this perplexing condition! Phil will also address comorbidity with other diagnoses, adolescent brain development, drugs (prescribed and otherwise!), what seems to help and ultimately the importance of a "strengths focus" when supporting those with ADHD.
