Temple Or Elohim’s Kol Nidre Appeal
The Kol Nidre committee would like to thank those of you who have already contributed to the High Holiday campaign. You
got the ball rolling! We are looking for 100% participation from our congregation. Please help us reach our intended goal of
$110,000. As you know, dues alone do not cover all expenses to run this fine establishment. We depend upon your generous
donations now and throughout the year to sustain Temple Or Elohim.
Your continued support of our congregation enables as many as possible, young and old, to form their own Jewish identities
within a supportive and nurturing congregational community. Temple Or Elohim is our shared Jewish home- our spiritual
home, our educational home and our social home. It is a place where we can gather, grow and share the events of our lives.
Our children deserve to have the same opportunity to participate in what has been our heritage for thousands of years.
Please donate by credit card, check or cash either by mail or by stopping in at the Temple office. Any amount you can give
will be greatly appreciated.
We thank you in advance for your participation.

Men’s Club Movie Night
Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 5:30 PM
On Sunday, October 19, at 5:30 PM, Men’s Club is having another dinner and movie night. Our evening
starts with a pasta dinner, followed at 6:30 PM by the Mel Brooks - Anne Bancroft 1983 classic “To Be Or
Not To Be”, and then the evening is topped off by dessert.
The movie is a terrific re-make of a delightful Jack Benny - Carol Lombard 1942 comedy in which a
Polish acting troupe tries to foil a Nazi plot to eradicate the Polish resistance, with the hammy lead
performer (played by Brooks) simultaneously dealing with the wanderlust of his wife and leading lady
(Bancroft, Brooks’ real-life wife). The real highlight of the movie is the interplay between Brooks and Bancroft, the only movie
they made together as true co-stars. Along for the ride are Tim Matheson, Charles Durning, Christopher Lloyd and Jose
Ferrer. Like “The Producers”, this film spoofs the Nazis, but there are some serious nods to the heinousness of the Nazi
regime. The movie replicates the best parts of the original comedy, with Brooks adding comedic touches as only he can, such
as the movie opening with him and Bancroft singing “Sweet Georgia Brown” in pigeon Polish. It’s a must see, especially for all
of you Mel Brooks devotees!
All of this is yours for just $10 per ticket! RSVP to the Temple Office with your order by October 14 ($15 thereafter or at the
door). Children under 13 admitted free. For more information and tickets, call the Temple office at (516) 433-9888, ext. 14. or
e-mail [email protected].

From the Rabbi
Welcome to all our members, whether you are new friends
or those of long standing. The Fall season began with another wonder-filled “Shabbat Under the Stars” with the
largest gathering ever. Our capable and tireless volunteers
began setting up in the morning and were done cleaning up
sometime after 1 AM. Such a group effort for the common
good is noteworthy. We are grateful to Laurel Fried and all
of our unsung heroes who served with such dedication. You
too are welcome to roll up your sleeves and get involved in
Men’s Club, Sisterhood, Social Action, etc. You will get
much more out of your active participation than you realize.
Our newest program is Roundtable Rap mediated by Terry
Kaufman and was so well received that attendees met over
the summer months. Look for it and all the other events on
our busy calendar advertised in e-mails, on the temple
website www.templeorelohim.com and in this monthly
publication, “The Shofar”.
Our High Holiday season (Yamim Noraim / Days of Awe)
which we are now in the midst of, is filled with events that I
hope you partake of. Our observance of Tashlich on the
second day of Rosh Hashanah was a spiritual experience
and jointly shared with about one hundred other
congregants and their families.
Our S’lichot service was held the weekend before Rosh
HaShanah and began with changing our Torah covers from
their regular ones to white ones for the holidays.
Afterward, we watched a film called “The Attack” that
pointed out the problems of a cultural divide with which
people of good will in the Middle East struggle. A discussion
followed at the Oneg following the presentation.

Our school, under the capable and dynamic
leadership of Deborah Tract is continuing to
grow, along with enrichment programs at every
level.
Men’s Club members and our custodial staff set up the
Sukkah for us. Many thanks to the volunteers. Weather
permitting, our Shabbat service on Friday, October 10th will
be outside in the Sukkah and all are welcome. Our school
children decorated the Sukkah and their participation was
not only important but wonderful to see.
Come and celebrate the receiving of the Torah at Simchat
Torah and participate in the Religious School’s
Consecration Service for all students who are beginning
their formal Jewish Education on Friday evening, October
17th at 7:30 PM.
For those adults interested in learning to read Hebrew and
become Bar or Bat Mitzvah, our first group meeting will be
on Thursday evening, October 23rd at 7 PM. No previous
experience required. All you need is the desire to learn and
you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
Joan and I wish all of you a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and
Peace-filled New Year 5775.

wishes for a Good New Year and an Inscription in the Book

Notes from the Cantor
The High Holidays are barely over. The glow and renewal is
still fresh in our minds and souls. The most present feeling I
have immediately following the holidays is that of gratitude.
I am so grateful for being able to be the cantor of such a
wonderfully warm, friendly and appreciative temple. Each
year spent as cantor of Temple Or Elohim only gets better
and better for me and my family.
Let's keep the energy flowing! I must first thank our fabulous
Rabbi Harvey Abramowitz for another inspiring and heartfelt
holiday. Working together to lead the congregation in prayer
and in song never gets old or stale when partnering with you
and I truly appreciate all of your input and help.
I also must thank our adult choir. You sounded better this
year than you ever have in all the years I have been here.
Your commitment, energy, musicality and joy while singing
at our services was infectious! As a cantor, I couldn't ask for
a more fun and supportive group to lead in prayer and song.
I also thank our new organist Ed Stolarz for his support both
musically and professionally.
A huge thank you goes out to our Torah readers. WOW!
4
Who would have known we had such an
incredible group who take on the challenge of
stepping up to the Torah on the biggest days of
the year and read so beautifully. Thank you,
thank you!
Of course, I must thank all of our "behind the scenes"
people who make the entire holidays happen: our President
Howard Pastolove, Michael Wilner and the Ritual
Committee, Nancy and Goldie in our office and our custodial
staff of Kenny, Greg and Anthony.
Most importantly, I must thank all of you, our most treasured
and valued congregational family. We would not be a
temple if it were not for you. Thank you for your support,
attendance and joyous singing throughout the holiday
season. There is no better experience for me than looking
out into the congregation and seeing you all singing with joy,
smiles on your faces and a warm glow in your heart!
All the best for a Happy and Healthy New Year.

The covenant between God and Israel is binding upon every

The specific citation establishing Yom Kippur and the rules

The unfortunate golden calf experience created an
estrangement between God and Israel. Moses pleads for
God’s forgiveness and God responds favorably, forgiving
Israel for their sin. He renews His covenant with them,
promises special blessings if they lead a sacred way of life
and observe the Sabbath and Holidays. A holy convocation

Dates to Remember
Shalom Friends!
The summer flew by and our 2014/15 school year has
begun! Much has occurred in the world this past summer.
We watched with astonishment and anxiety as the news
about Israel’s fight for peace and solidarity unfolded.
Approximately 72 soldiers from the Israeli Defense Force
lost their lives protecting and trying to restore relative peace
to Israel.
Innocent lives were lost on both sides.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise. All of the above issues are
entwined in the curriculum we teach in the upper grades.
On September 5th our community came together for an
evening of spirituality, worship, a delicious feast, song and
RUACH – spirit! Rabbi Abramowitz and Cantor Katz led a
beautiful uplifting service that appealed to all generations.
Our band, always a hit, created an atmosphere that made
everyone want to participate. Our young children created
beautiful cards with meaningful sentiments that were sent to
the Israeli soldiers. I have no doubt that the soldiers in the
IDF have already read the heartfelt notes from our children.
Thousands of miles apart, we, as a congregation and a
community continue to pray for Israel and live with hope that
peace will prevail in the future.
On September 9th we held Open School Night, where the
clergy, teachers and I were excited to welcome our students
and their families to the Temple Or Elohim Religious School.
Classes began during the week of September 15th, 2014.
Students are taught valuable lessons on Tzedakah, and
Gemilut Chasadim, Acts of Loving Kindness. Last year, the
Religious School donated food to families in need, toys to
sick children and participated in the Pennies for Lymphoma
& Leukemia.
Reinforcing the valuable lesson of helping others, Rabbi,
Cantor and I participated in the Ice-Bucket Challenge for
ALS. The children enjoyed throwing icy water on the clergy
and me! More importantly, they appreciated the lesson of
joining together to help one another, sometimes doing things
that are not comfortable, yet doing it because the act of a
good deed is emotionally rewarding.
It is no secret that our synagogue grew in size this past summer. Many new families joined our temple family and chose
Temple Or Elohim as their spiritual home. Our Religious
School has developed an outstanding reputation for
engaging students with out of the box, creative learning that
goes beyond any text book reading. Our curriculum
challenges our students to learn Hebrew and apply tools to
be effective Hebrew learners. Each grade consists of
lessons that are age appropriate and promotes learning that
are exciting and meaningful in the lens of a lifelong learner.
It is an honor and privilege to serve as your Director of
Education, and I look forward to working with our students
and making their Jewish education a positive experience.

Gaza Conflict, Operation Protective Edge
Throughout Israel’s history, IDF soldiers have fallen in
defense of their country and families. Sadly, this is an
ongoing reality as the IDF operates in Gaza to defend Israel
from Hamas rocket fire and the threat of terrorist infiltration by
tunnels.
"Israel's most recent conflict in Gaza has many victims, not the
least of them are the brave men and women of the IDF. They
served their country with honor and some have made the
ultimate sacrifice. Those lost in the conflict included soldiers
ranging in ages from 19 to 45 years old. All of us mourn their
loss and pray for their souls and for comfort for their grieving
families."

Men’s Club
A new season is just beginning as the summer winds
down and the High Holy Days have begun. I find myself
elected as Co-President along with Gilda Balesh and the
challenge continues to find new ways to make Sisterhood
grow and provide our members with new experiences
while working to help support our temple. This challenge
is what most motivates me. How can I interest an
intergenerational group of women from all walks of life
and, for many, in a transitional time of their lives, to give
us a try and check us out? Whether you are single or
married, with or without children, born Jewish, Jewish by
choice or non-Jewish but married to someone Jewish,
without each of you we will always be one woman short.
Over 350 people came out on a humid September evening to
enjoy food, music, purchase some raffles and participate in a
wonderful outdoor Shabbat service highlighted by singing
beautiful prayers that are synonymous with “Shabbat Under
the Stars”. It was the epitome of “templehood”. The parking
lot was a sea of congregants, curious newcomers, children
and clergy. The spirit of volunteerism was evident all around,
from those who set-up in the heat and cleaned up after dark,
to those who did duty behind hot, smoking grills, to the ladies
whose baking skills gave us much to enjoy at the oneg, to the
makers of beautiful music. SUTS is the communal transition
from summer to fall, when we ready ourselves for the High
Holidays and the new year ahead.
We are very fortunate this year to welcome so many new
members to the Temple. I, along with other board
members, have been calling and personally greeting
these new women to Sisterhood. Sisterhood has an
event-packed calendar which can be found on the
temple’s website www.templeorelohim.com.
High Holiday services were once again beautifully conducted.
Filled with traditional prayers, the sounding of the shofar and
the procession of Torahs throughout our crowded sanctuary
the holidays are a time to reconnect with one’s self. Many
thanks to all who served as ushers during the services.
We invite and welcome all new and returning members
to our “Welcome Brunch” on Sunday, September 21st at
10:00 AM to the home of Robin Grossman.
We also extend a special thank you to Robin Grossman
for taking on the massive job of organizing and executing
the Garage Sale that took place on Sunday, September
14th. We couldn’t have run it without you!
Thank you to Maria Alexenburg for preparing the candy
packages that were given out for the High Holidays.
th
On Monday, October 6 at 7:00 PM we are presenting
Terry Sands, a motivational speaker, who will talk about
her battle with multiple sclerosis and cancer and her
journey back to a new career. You won’t want to miss
this inspirational talk.
I want to thank all of the Sisterhood members who
volunteered their time to make “Shabbat Under the Stars”
the success it was. A special thank you goes to Laurel
Fried and Robin Grossman who worked tirelessly to plan
this event.
We welcome all of your ideas and suggestions and will
continue to implement new and innovative programs.
Sisterhood hopes to see you at one of our events and I,
along with my co-president Gilda Balesh, wish you
L’Shana Tovah, a year of peace, health and happiness.
Thanks to the Men’s Club members who pitched in to assist
Ken Scott with building our sukkah. With all the camaraderie,
there is a sense of satisfaction at the completion of this task.
Men’s Club is hosting many events this year, beginning with
Movie Night on Sunday, October 19th. We are screening “To
Be or Not to Be” starring Mel Brooks and his wife Anne
Bancroft. See the flyer in this edition of “The Shofar” or on
the temple website, www.templeorelohim.com for more
details.
Temple Or Elohim’s annual Chanukah party, which Men’s
Club co-hosts with the Religious School, will take place on
Sunday, December 14th. Watch for details.
February will be a very busy month for us. We will be hosting
our first Movie and Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February
1st, 2015. We will be co-hosting with Sisterhood a speaker,
Ike Ilkiw, who is an NYPD Detective and author, on Sunday,
February 8th at 1:00 PM. February finishes with our most
popular Comedy Night event Saturday evening, February 28th
at 7:00 PM. A buffet dinner will be followed by a full 90
minute comedy show featuring several comedians who will
have you howling with laughter. Watch for details for all
these events on our temple website, “The Shofar”, e-mail
blasts and flyers.
Our Temple offers so much to you, but you must take the first
step and get involved. The next Men’s club meeting is
Monday, November 3rd at 7:30 PM.
May our Temple grow and prosper and may we share in
celebrating the Holidays together as a temple family!
On behalf of our Temple Men’s Club, L’Shana Tovah.
With warmest regards,
Sheila Zimmerman & Gilda Balesh

Temple Or Elohim Happenings
Shabbat Under the Stars, 2014
On September 5, 2014 our parking lot had over 350
people eating, singing, dancing, praying and sharing
each other‘s company under the moonlit sky at our
seventh annual “Shabbat Under the Stars”. It was an
evening filled with warmth, happiness and spirituality
between old and new friends. To quote one new
member who said, “I know I am home now. This place
has so much enthusiasm it is contagious”.
The evening was well planned and organized by Robin
Grossman and her forty volunteers, Ken Gerome and his
grillers, Deena Yaris and her servers, Amy Adler and her
bakers, Rabbi Abramowitz and Cantor Katz, the music of
our band “Nishamah”, Deborah Tract and her teachers,
Custodians, Ken Scott, Greg Powell and Anthony Gioia,
and our office staff, Nancy Marshall and Goldie Brandl.
The youth choir, Brian Reich, Sloan Kass, Aaron
Samuelson, Michael Balesh and David Cohen sang and
the band played a variety of music from the sixties,
seventies and eighties including original arrangements
by band members David Berg and Michael Wilner.
The committee would like to thank our donors: Michael
Barcham, Cantor Katz, Rabbi Abramowitz, Steve and
Stacy Finklestein, Jodi and Kevin Breslin, Donna and
Barry Wolff, Bob and Barbara Feinstein, Mark and Laurel
Fried, Lucille Jacobs, Larry Jacobs, Phil Levy and Risa

One out of three Americans over the age of 65 will loose
their balance and fall. For those over 80, the risk
increases dramatically and often leads to hospitalization,
painful surgery, and decreased life expectancy. Stability
decreases with age, as muscles deteriorate and reflexes
slow down.
Israeli biomedical engineer, Yankton Manor, has
launched the “B shoe”, a new technology devise to help
prevent the loss of balance among the elderly. Manor,
along with his associates, installed a sensor device in the
heel of a sneaker that helps maintain the desirable
pressure in the heel area.
The device works by gently gliding the shoe backwards
to correct imbalance. The sensor operates through a
rechargeable battery, detecting when the center of
pressure is shifting.
If the wearer does not adjust his or her step within a few
milliseconds the shoe begins to move backwards a few
centimeters to help regain stability and balance. The
shoe has been granted patents both in the United States
and in Israel, and should be on the market within the next
few years. Wonders never cease.
