More History of the Community from Local Historian Donald Jones
South Bangor Tigers
by Donald Jones
BANGOR- In recent histories, we told the stories
of baseball teams which either were Bangor teams
or that came to Bangor to play exhibition games.
Teams such as “The House of David”, a bearded
Jewish team, “Donke Baseball”, a game played on
donkeys, and the “Kayser A.A.”, a team sponsored
by the Julius Kayser Hosiery Company.
Now a question for all you loyal baseball fans.
Does anyone remember the South Bangor Tigers? The history
that we have gleaned
is as follows.
The South Bangor
Tigers was a team
owned and operated
by Williard “Doc”
Frace and competed
during the 1936 to
1942 era. I suspect
that World War II
had something to do
with the demise of
the team. We don’t
know the significance of the name
“Tigers” but this
much we do know.
They were members
of the Northampton County League and played
their games on the old, familiar Pennico Field in
South Bangor. One of the outstanding players
was Bob Schultz, who was probably the team’s
best pitcher. A few other players who excelled on
the playing field were Paul Stiles, Brooks Young
and Floyd Stahl. A roster of players is listed at
the end of this history. I saw the Tigers play and
they were a first class team. They made us proud
whenever they took to the field.
Another name that comes to mind was Wallace Ruth, not as a player but as an umpire.
*Writers note- As with many histories of Bangor, important facts are missing. I guess you
and I are partially to blame. We were not record
keepers years ago, but we can start now so that
the future generations will know and enjoy the
past. These stories in the Blue Valley Times are
my way of trying to “keep the fires burning”.
The roster of players is as follows: Stan
Roberts, Paul Smith, Claire Cruver, Paul
Stiles, Edwin Shaffer, Kenneth Shook, Walter
Stiles, Bob Schultz, Red Smith, Wally Ruth,
“Doc Frace”, Paul Rothrock, Kenneth Trewin
and Richard Mack.
