AN ARTISTIC VISION
SnowMask-SALZBURG.comp is an innovative Danish-Austrian music exchange and development project between the
group of composers in Denmarks’ North Jutland SNOW MASK
GROUP and its cooperation with the music ensemble SNOW
MASK ENSEMBLE and composers associated with GUNNAR
BERG ENSEMBLE SALZBURG.

The project consists of 6 public concerts with 6 world premieres, 8
Danish premieres and 15 Austrian premieres, and the concert programmes include music by all the cooperating living composers and
Gunnar Berg as a contribution to the 100th anniversary of Danish
Composers’ Society and Austrian Composers’ Society:

Furthermore the project attracts attention to the Austrian architect
firm Coop Himmelb(l)au’s HOUSE OF MUSIC in Aalborg to be
inaugurated in 2014 - as well as the the 200th anniversary of Danish
architect Theophil Hansen (1813-1891) and his famed Musikverein
and a great number of important public buildings in Vienna, including
the Parliament.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
Autumn 2012 the NORTH DENMARK REGION called for cultural
projects with innovative, regional and international dimensions.
SnowMask-SALZBURG.comp was nominated and received a
substantially donation as part of the Region’s Cultural Strategy
2012-2013 with WORKING GROUP GUNNAR BERG as project
coordinator.

PROJECT VISION AND PURPOSE
The visions and the purposes of the project are:

Make visible and contribute to the further development of the unique environment of contemporary music in North Jutland and
in Salzburg, nationally and internationally
Create new opportunities for composers and their music in North
Jutland and in Salzburg, nationally and internationally
Increase the interest in contemporary music in North Jutland and
Salzburg
Create new musical works of lasting value
PROJECT CONTENT
The content of the project is tripartite and carried out in three phases:

April 2013. The composers and ensembles meet, discuss and
exchange scores and recordings
May-September 2013. The composers compose - trios for the
individual ensembles and sixtets for both ensembles
October-November 2013. Musicians and composers meet in
Aalborg to rehearse and prepare the six public concerts with the
instrumental ensembles 1-2-3 November in Aalborg and 7-8-9
November in Salzburg

SNOW MASK ENSEMBLE was formed in 2011 - with an
ambition to create a highly specialized chamber ensemble for
contemporary classical music with an international profile and
international artistic skills. Under the artistic direction of the composer group Snow Mask the ensemble presents and premiers

GUNNAR BERG ENSEMBLE SALZBURG was founded in
2008 by Klaus Ager and Yvonne Zehner to promote the latest in
contemporary music. The ensemble is named after the Danish
modernist composer Gunnar Berg (1909-1989), who had fruitful
sojourns to the Salzburg Festivals in 1932 and 1935, and to the
”Salzburg Seminar in American Studies” at Schloss Leopoldskron
in 1950, where Berg composed PASTOURELLE for solo flute.

Yvonne Zehner, guitar. Born in Salzburg and graduated from Mozarteum
University Salzburg and Musikhochschule Basel. Lecturer at Universität
Passau. Managing the international Halleiner Gitarrenfestival and Passauer
Saiten (www.passauer-saiten.de)
Vera Klug, flute. Born in Innsbruck and graduated from Mozarteum University Salzburg. Member of several prominent ensembles for contemporary
music, among these œnm . österreichisches ensemble für neue musik.
Residing in Salzburg
Chih-Hui Chang, cello. Born in Taiwan Chi-Hui Chang holds a Master of
Music degree from Mozarteum University Salzburg and a Diploma with

SnowMask-SALZBURG.comp is a substantial contribution to the
experimental musical scene in Europe, and the high artistic potential
makes the expectations of the vision’s impact high, not only within
quantity and quality, but also on a short as well as a long term. The
new compositions created for this project will continue to be a part of
the two ensembles’ repertoire - with the potential of being presented
by other ensembles as well.
