102 The Finest of France: Exploring the Classic Wine Regions of France
Quantity: 35
Date: 1/31/2015
Banish the winter blahs come late January with a glam tasting of French wines
paired with tasty cuisine, geared for those new to wine and oenophiles alike.
Bonus: it’s hosted in the gorgeous Lake
Drive home of members Jock and Linda
Mutschler. Currently under an extensive
restoration planned to be finished before
this event, the English Tudor/Romanesque
mansion – formerly
the Samuel A. Field
Mansion, featuring a
steep, hipped roof with
finials; Bedford limestone exterior; breathtaking exterior stone carvings; and massive windows divided by stone mullions – will be brought
back to its 1890 roots. Initially built on East State Street, and
designed by Chicago architect August Fiedler, the home’s
planned razing in the late 1920s outraged locals, and the owner relocated it three miles north to North Lake Drive in Milwaukee.
Certified sommelier Nate Norfolk and nationally published wine writer Kristine
Hansen – both First Church members – promise to not only pour wines that are examples of classic French regions but also tell stories about their wine-soaked travels to France. The wines presented are from Burgundy,
Crozes-Hermitage, Chateauneuf du Pape, St. Emilion,
Champagne, Savenieres and other regions. If this sounds
intimidating, don’t fear because these wines are all made
from the familiar grapes of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Chenin Blanc. These wines and regions
all have stories that will help us understand why they
have been imitated the world over. A wonderful array of
dishes will accompany the selected wines.
