Newsletter No. 32 th Wednesday 15 October 2014 Dear Parents and Carers, Last Friday we welcomed our new student leaders for this term: Isabella, Florence, Jaxon, Devin, Jarred, Stephanie and Claudia who are looking forward to their roles this term. This Friday night, our students will enjoy the DISCO in Owen Hall! Many thanks to the parents volunteering their time to assist with the sausage sizzle from 5:30pm and the disco from 6-8pm – we hope to see you there. The disco is for current SPX students and their younger (pre-school and toddler) siblings. Footsteps Dance Company will be our DJ hosts for the evening. The second working bee for this year is on Saturday 18th October from 8:00am. To date, we only have two replies – and we need about 10 parents to complete the jobs within 2 hours. The main jobs are: spreading sand in the sandpit spreading softfall in the junior and senior Attached to the Link is the National Catholic Education Commission’s statement in response to the review of the Australian Curriculum. More details will follow regarding the recommendations from the review. We look forward to supporting Mission month through ‘Socktober’ on Friday 24th October - more details further on in the Link. Many thanks for your invaluable support of this appeal. LET US PRAY Synod on the Family Until October 19, Church leaders have gathered in Rome for the Extraordinary Synod of the Family. WORLD MISSION DAY The name is important for a synod of Bishops is only called extraordinary when it is convened to deal with issues that require a “speedy solution” and which demand urgent attention for the good of the entire Church. There are many difficulties and pressures that families face, and bishops who gather for this Synod will be seeking ways to assist families and to promote the great good that is family life. World Mission Day is celebrated every year in every country wherever there are Catholics committed to building a better world for all of God's people, a world where everyone has all they need to live a dignified and fulfilling life. This Sunday, 19 October is World Mission Day. This year, parishioners and school children across Australia are invited to reach out to support the crucial work of the Jamaican Catholic Church in helping people turn away from violence and crime. Sadly Jamaica is a nation deeply troubled with the second-highest rate of gun-killings anywhere in the world. Communities across Jamaica live in constant The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called on Catholics of the world to pray for the success of this Synod and to pray for families. fear. Madonna APRE 2015 BOOK LISTS Book lists for 2015 were sent home last week with every student from Prep to Year 5. If your child has not brought home a book list, spare copies are available at the school office. If you do not wish to order online or over the phone, please return the completed order form to the school office by Friday 24th October. COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER Today, every family will receive a Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough brochure offering a home baking treat that can be purchased as a fundraiser for the school. Browse through and see the many options you can buy, including Christmas cake and shortbread, ready for your Christmas cooking! The dough is convenient as it can be kept in the fridge (for up to 4 weeks) or freezer till when you need it. You just scoop, bake and serve! There is also a chance to win a family holiday if you place an order (all details on page 2). Please complete the order form at the back of the brochure, pop in an envelope marked “Cookie Dough Fundraiser” with your payment and drop into the school office. IMPORTANT Any order forms received AFTER this date cannot be processed by the school. SCHOOL LOGO PENCIL CASE Traditionally student’s Book Lists have included a pencil case. Our Uniform Shop now stocks 2 sizes of pencil case which are of better quality, and printed with the school logo. If you would like your child to have a school pencil case for next year, please complete the order form that was sent home with the Book List last week and return it to the school office by Friday 17th October. Your order will be processed and sent home with your child at the end of Term 4, ready for 2015.
