Operation Back to School a
success: selfless locals step up
The 24th annual Operation Back to School (OBTS)
supply drive has proven to be a success. A coalition
consisting of representatives from Cheyenne Light,
Fuel & Power, F.E. Warren Air Force Base Education
Center Embry Riddle University Office, Laramie
County Community College and Laramie County
School District 1 combined their efforts to make this
happen.
This year, the group also partnered with Element
Church to help provide supplies for their annual
“Back 2 School Bash” on Aug. 16. At that event,
2,000 backpacks containing school supplies were
provided to kindergarten through 12th-grade
students and college students in need. Another 300
backpacks were distributed from Needs following
the event.
“Without the selfless generosity of the Cheyenne
community, this never would have been possible,”
Barbara Fecht, Needs Inc. executive director, said.
“There are so many people in the community who
could be one missed paycheck away from needing
our help and we appreciate donations whether they
be big or small.”
Needs and the Operation Back to School committee
thanks all of the local businesses, organizations,
churches and anonymous donors for their generous
support. Financial Contributions: AT&T, Cheyenne
Light, Fuel and Power, Element Church, First
Education Credit Union, HollyFrontier Refining,
Kevin Byrne & Associates, Cheyenne Chamber
of Commerce members, Mitchell’s BBQ, Snowy
Range Telecom Pioneers, Sweetgrass Media,
many individuals. School Supplies: Align (LIEAP),
Ascension Lutheran Church, Bell Springs Kempo
Karate School, Biolife Plasma, Blue Cross/Blue Shield,
Brian & Peaches Tyrrell, Cheyenne Light, Fuel and
Power, Cheyenne Police Department, Cheyenne
Regional Medical Center, Crank Legal Group, Dollar
Tree Store, Edwards Jones Investments, Embry
Riddle University (FEW/AFB), Element Church, First
Education Credit Union, First Presbyterian Church,

Through the course of the year, Needs will continue
to fill supply requests when students come to their
offices. According to Fecht, Needs doesn’t have a
specific goal for the number of school supplies to be
obtained next year.
“We just want to be capable of meeting the needs
for whoever requests them,” Fecht said. “If it’s 1,000
more students next year, then so be it.”
