It is always refreshing to welcome our new and returning students and witness the dynamic energy that flows across the campus landscape. We are looking forward to a very productive year. We are pleased to report an increase in enrollment over fall 2013. We are again over 900 students. While we are not where we were in fall 2012, the upward trajectory is progress. The Enrollment Services team did a tremendous job in bringing in new students and guiding our returning students back to the Eagle’s nest. We appreciate the strong support of alumni across the nation. Much of our success is due to your active engagement. We have already begun recruitment for spring and fall 2015. The implementation of the Master of Arts in Teaching should also help to increase our enrollment numbers, along with opportunities for weekend study and online degree completion programs which are expected to be fully launched by the summer of 2015. Our theme for this year is Tougaloo College... Leading the Change. In keeping with our strong legacy of empowering our students to effect change, this is an opportune time to more intentionally engage our students, alumni, and friends in advancing our legacy to lead the change. As we become more immersed in today’s globalized economy, Tougaloo is leading the change to broaden educational opportunities for our students. I recently returned from China to formalize the HBCU-Chinese Collaboration, establishing partnerships between HBCUs and Chinese universities. Tougaloo is one of eight HBCUs to comprise the inaugural group for this historic collaboration. This is an amazing opportunity for our young people to become more familiar with the history, culture, and language of China. We want to provide our students with the broadest exposure as we prepare them for global leadership and service. In this age of greater accountability and questions about college cost and value, we are leading the change to demonstrate how to be effective, efficient, and net excellent student outcomes. We were recently selected by University Research and Review, LLC as a “Best Value College”. The Center for Higher Education Reform issued a recent report on the President’s Rating Scale: How American Colleges Might Fare. Tougaloo College is among 19 exemplary institutions, identified from a field of 1,700 U.S. institutions, using the metrics of access, affordability, and success. The Educate to Career (ETC) College Rankings Index recently ranked Tougaloo College #23 out of 1222 U.S. institutions included in the rankings for best economic value. This new ranking system shows the economic value added with a degree, based on the socio-economic status of students at the time of college entrance, and cost of college and earning outcomes of the students when they enter the labor market. In reading the methodology and reviewing the data section for the ETC, an important statement was clearly noted - Ivy League and other top tier institutions are more adept at selecting winners (those with high SAT/ACT scores) than they are at “creating 2 winners”. But, this is indeed what Tougaloo College does! We create winners and have historically done so. Our students might not come to us with the highest test scores, but they are transformed into winners while they are here and leave here with that mindset. These newest rankings amplify the Tougaloo story we all know. Whatever period in its history, Tougaloo has been distinguished as an institution with academic, social, and economic value. A Tougaloo education is any student’s passport to success. Please help us tell our story. Our business is the creation of the future. We are leading the change to provide access and success to students who will comprise the workforce of the future, but are often denied opportunity for a myriad of reasons. Their lives are transformed in our supportive and engaging learning environment. One of our high achieving students, Alex Ortiz, the son of undocumented immigrants, comes to my mind. When Alex came to us in the fall 2011, he was ineligible for federal loans due to his status. We accepted him, based on his high school academic record and test scores. He has continued to be an outstanding Tougaloo student, maintaining a 3.83 grade point average and will graduate in May 2015. He has spent a semester exchange at Brown University and completed a summer internship with Congressman Bennie G. Thompson in the Washington, D.C. office. Alex represents hundreds of other Tougaloo students who are excelling and empowered to change the world. In a constantly evolving world, we must prepare our students to navigate the changes, exposing them to leading edge, learning opportunities – equipping them to build a better, more inclusive world for all humankind. This is the driving force for our commitment to lead the change. As alumni, who know the benefits of a Tougaloo education, we want you to join us in leading the change. To maintain our competitive edge, we need you – our permanent stakeholders to support this special place. I am asking you to give, every year in any amount and ask at least five other alumni to do likewise. You can invest in a student’s education with scholarship support. You can etch your name in history with the purchase of a paver in the Woodworth Chapel Memorial Plaza. You can place your name on a classroom in the Bennie G. Thompson Academic and Civil Rights Research Center. You can make a gift to the 1869 Fund simply to support the transformative work that is underway and be a legacy keeper. Our progressive work is only made possible by the generosity of alumni and friends, like yourself. Help us to preserve our historic significance and advance our contemporary relevance by supporting the transformational work that is underway at our Tougaloo College. You can make a donation at donate.tougaloo.edu/donation. And, do join us for as many of our upcoming events as you can. We always enjoy seeing you. Together, we can Lead the Change. Sincerely, Beverly W.
