Viking Times Williams Valley School District -- Serving 10330 State Route 209 Tower City, PA 17980 www.wvschools.net Dr. Donald Burkhardt Superintendent Vol. XXXV, No.8 Boroughs: Tower City Williamstown Townships: Porter Rush Wiconisco Williams SEPTEMBER 2014 Girls Basketball Team Attends Summer Camp The Williams Valley Girls Basketball Team attended the North Carolina Team Camp this summer in preparation for their upcoming season. During their trip the girls had the opportunity to visit Duke University and Cameron Arena on their way to Chapel Hill. The girls competed in eight games and also played in Carmichael Arena as well as the Dean Smith Center. The girls represented Williams Valley very well at camp. Their hard work, skill ability, enthusiasm and teamwork were present in every game. The girls are looking forward to using this experience as a building block for the upcoming season. The staff and players would like to thank the parents, Mr. Shuey, Girls Basketball Boosters, and the Williams Valley Board of Education for making the trip possible. The Lady Vikings hope to make this a tradition so that other team members can share in this experience in years to come. Team Members include: Haley Nestor, Katie Whelski, Hannah Nestor, Olivia Ancheff, Cassie Schorr, Autumn Calnon, Bindy Boyer and Emily Wessner. In compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 the Williams Valley School District states that the District does not discriminate on the basis of sex in admission to or employment in its education programs or activities. Williams Valley's student ambassadors to the Schuylkill County Youth Summit , Autumn Calnon (2nd from left) Erica Wessner (center) and Roofina Ali are pictured with Schuylkill County Commissioners Hess (far left) and Halcovage (far right) following the recent Youth Ambassadors Meeting on September 16th in Pottsville. The Youth Summit brings together students from all the school districts in Schuylkill County to discuss issues pertinent to young people in Schuylkill County. The 201415 focus project for the Youth Summit is a campaign focused on educating the public on distracted driving especially texting and driving. The Youth Ambassadors will be hosting 3 Town Meetings at various locations throughout the county during the month of October to discuss the importance of this issue and how it relates to driver training programs in school districts. Williams Valley will be involved in the Town Meeting that will be held on October 23rd at 6:00 p.m. at Sweet Arrow Lake Park. Tri-Valley, Pine Grove, Blue Mountain and Schuylkill Haven School Districts will also be represented at this meeting. The Williams Valley Youth Summit once again collaborated with a community organization for their Murals for the Community Project. During the months of June, July and August, members of the Youth Summit and other volunteers from the junior-senior high school completed a 140 foot mural on the bathhouse building of the Porter-Tower Community Pool. The group worked in conjunction with the Porter-Tower Recreation Commission to complete this project and they wish to thank Mrs. Bonnie Raho for all her help in coordinating the project. The artists pictured here are Rachael Reiner, Kate Vega, Kassie Jones, Stephen Schlegel and Roofina Ali. Other students and alumni who helped with the project were: Ronald Reedy, Lindy Kraska, Faizan Ali, Anoshay Ali, Alyssa Raho, Chelsea Ferraro, and Samantha Mione. In order to purchase the supplies needed to create the mural for the Porter-Tower Community Pool, the Youth Summit group applied for and received a grant of $500 from the Schuylkill County Commissioners. This was a matching grant so the students sponsored a community splash party to earn the matching funds for the grant. The party was held on July 31st. Pictured here are some of the swimmers who took a break from the water to participate in one of the “on land” games. Food, music, games, prizes and, of course, swimming were enjoyed by all who attended the event. 2 WILLIAMS VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR August 20 and 21, 2014 . . . . . . . . . . In addition, “behind the wheel” driver training and the ability of students to drive to school are privileges which Williams Valley continues to provide while many other school districts have ceased to allow them because of the expense the school district incurs. The imposing of a student activity fee helps to defray some of the costs of these programs such as advisor/coach stipends, transportation, materials, uniforms, and equipment thus allowing the programs to continue. Participation in any or all of the following activities will require the one-time payment of the Student Activity Fee: All junior high, junior varsity and varsity sports All clubs. Jazz Band Marching Band Williams Valley Singers Cheerleading All student drivers All students who plan to take “behind the wheel” driver training. Checks may be made payable to: Williams Valley School District The fee and the Student Activity Fee Form must be handed into Mrs. Jolene Smith in the District Office prior to the start of the student’s participation in any of the above listed activities. **Students participating in any club must have the fee and Activity Fee Form submitted to Mrs. Smith on or before the first day of the club. The signature page is available on the school web page under Student Activity Fee Form. Members of the Fall sports teams participated in several games during the 1st pep rally of the 2014-15 school year prior to the Tri-Valley vs Williams Valley football game. Pictured (l tor) are Jenna Daniel (volleyball), Ryan Harris (football), Rylie Thomas (volleyball), Albert Wolfgang (football), Olivia Ancheff (volleyball), and Mike Bixler (band & soccer) preparing to sit on Brandon Bopp (band & soccer). Two representatives from each of the grade levels competed in a contest in which one of the students had to feed a dog bone shaped cookie (Beat those DAWGS!) suspended from a fishing pole to their blindfolded classmate. Seniors Olivia Ancheff and Haley Nestor are pictured along with juniors, Kate Whelski and Tre Engle. Cheerleaders, Brooke Miller and Allison Auman enjoy the hilarity of the competition. 7 1 W I L L I A M S V A L L E Y 8 T School Store for Grades K, 2, 4 & 6 7/8 Girls BBall – Saint Clair – Away – 4:00 p.m. Girls Soccer – CMVT – Away – 4:15 p.m. Volleyball – Shamokin – Home – 5:30 p.m. 2 Girls Soccer – Line Mountain (Varsity Only) – Away – 4:30 p.m. Boys Soccer – Schuylkill Haven – Home – 5:30 p.m. Volleyball – Halifax – Away – 5:30 p.m. Elem. Title I Connections It is hard to believe that we have been back in school for almost six weeks! The Title I staff is looking forward to a successful school year. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for the children’s achievement and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out these responsibilities. Miss Cheyenne Colondato joins the Title 1 staff this year. She will be working with reading skills for Grades K, 1, and 2. Mrs. Kristina Miller will return as the Reading Specialist for Grades 3, 4, and 5. Mrs. Robin Fetter will also assist with reading skills for grades 3 and 6 as well as lend math support. Mrs. Melissa Balsavage will provide math support to the primary grades as well as 4th and 6th grade. Mrs. Jen Minnich will be coordinating the RTI (Response to Intervention) program at the primary level. All Title 1 teachers work closely with the classroom teacher to ensure success for the students. It is important to remember that all successes, big or small, are meaningful. Each child will progress at his or her own rate, developing skills when he or she is ready. Preserving each child’s self-esteem and building a secure, respectful foundation for growth will always remain a priority. Below are some suggestive ideas that may be a benefit to you and your child. • Encourage your child to spend time reading daily. Research shows that children who spend at least 30 minutes a day reading are more likely to become good readers. • Help your child become a regular visitor to the library. Encourage your child to select a book of interest. • Select a book for you to read. You will be setting an example of the importance of reading for your child. • Challenge your child with new vocabulary words. Words with multiple meanings are challenging for students. Promoting your child’s love of reading is one of the most important things you can do to put your child on the road to school success. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the Title 1 teachers listed above or Mrs. Jolene Smith, Title I Coordinator. Parking & “Behind the Wheel” Driver Education Fee Due to the continued rise in costs and the decrease in various subsidy funds from the state and local governments the Williams Valley School District has found it necessary to continue impose a modest fee for the privilege of driving to school and parking on school property and for students who wish to take advantage of the “behind the wheel” driver training. The fees for the 2013-14 school year will remain the same as last year: • Student Parking Fee - $15.00 • Behind the Wheel Driver Training - $20.00 **Student drivers and students who plan to take the “behind the wheel” training must also pay the $20 Student Activity Fee. Questions concerning these fees may be directed to Mrs. Jolene Smith in the District Office. 717-6472167, Ext. 1224. 9 October 2014 Williams Valley School District Breakfast Menu Student Breakfast: $1.10 MONDAY Reduced: 30¢ TUESDAY Sept. 29 Graham Snackers Strawberry Banana Yogurt Apple Juice Chilled Peaches Milk WEDNESDAY Sept. 30 Mini Maple Pancakes Syrup Cup Turkey Sausage Patty Chilled Pears Grape Juice Milk In-Service Day 13 Alternates: Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Trix or Lucky Charms Cereal w/a String Cheese or Scooby Graham Sticks Milk Choices: 1% White, Skim White, Skim Chocolate Skim Strawberry 20 PBJ Cup & 2 Breadsticks Strawberry Banana Yogurt Chilled Mandarin Oranges, Milk Pancake & Turkey 27 Sausage on a Stick Syrup Vanilla Yogurt Cup Apple Juice Mandarin Oranges Milk Sausage & Cheese on an English Muffin Apple Juice Fresh Orange Slices Milk 21 Pancakes with Syrup Hard Boiled Egg Apple Juice Chilled Peaches Milk 28 Egg & Cheese on an English Muffin Grape Juice Fresh Orange Slices Milk 2 French Toast Sticks Syrup Turkey Sausage Patty Grape Juice Chilled Mandarin Oranges Milk Jumbo Waffles w/Syrup Yogurt Cup Grape Juice Applesauce Milk 22 Jumbo Waffles w/Syrup Animal Crackers Apple Juice Chilled Mixed Fruit Milk 10 Cini Mini Cinnamon Rolls Hard Boiled Egg Apple Juice Chilled Peaches Milk Egg & Sausage on a Bagel Petite Banana Orange Juice Milk 15 3 9 8 PBJ Cup & 2 Breadsticks Fresh Apple Grape Juice Milk 14 FRIDAY Oct. 1 7 Pancake & Turkey Sausage on a Stick Syrup Vanilla Yogurt Cup Apple Juice Mandarin Oranges Milk Milk: 55¢ THURSDAY Egg Patty Buttered Toast w/Jelly Apple Juice Fresh Orange Wedges Milk Pancakes w/Syrup Turkey Sausage Patty Grape Juice Chilled Pears Milk 6 Adult Breakfast: $1.65 16 WG Bagel w/Light Cream Cheese & Jelly Trix Cereal Bar Fresh Apple Slices Orange Juice Milk 17 Cheese Omelet Biscuit w/Margarine & Jelly Apple Juice Chilled Mixed Fruit Milk 23 Buttered Toast w/Jelly Egg Patty Orange Juice Chilled Pears Milk French Toast Sticks Syrup Turkey Sausage Patty Grape Juice Petite Banana Milk Jumbo Waffles 29 w/Syrup Cocoa Krispy Chocolate Cereal Bar Apple Juice Chilled Pears Milk Cheese Omelet Biscuit w/Margarine & Jelly Grape Juice Chilled Mixed Fruit Milk 30 24 PBJ Cup & 2 Breadsticks Sliced Strawberries Apple Juice Milk Cini Mini Cinnamon Rolls Hard Boiled Egg Orange Juice Chilled Peaches Milk A full student breakfast includes a choice of entrée supplying grains or grains and protein, a fruit, vegetable or juice side dish, and a choice of milk.
