Dear Parents/Carers,
Year 6 Educational Visit to Alresford Railway:
Last week, as part of their topic on the Victorians, the whole of Y6 participated in an
educational visit to Alresford Watercress Line.
The pupils took part in two workshops, led by staff from the watercress line, and got to
travel on a steam train. The feedback from both the teachers and pupils was very
positive. Over the course of the visit they had the opportunity to investigate aspects of Victorian
life, including the building of the railway lines and the effects that the railway had on the local area.
It was also very pleasing to hear that a member of the public commented upon how well behaved
and polite our pupils were!
Y3/4 Cross Country Event:
On Tuesday 7th October, a selection of pupils from the schools cross country club,
competed in a partnership league event, organised for schools in the Eastleigh and
Winchester districts. The event took place around the grassed spaces behind Fleming
Park Leisure, in Eastleigh. There were 4 races in total with pupils racing around a
circuit approx. 1km long.

For some of the pupils, this was their first experience of competitive cross country running. Each
and every one of the runners did exceptionally well and we are proud of them all.

Thank you very much to Mrs Cooper for taking the children to the event and to all parents who went
along to offer their support and encouragement.
Safe Route to School Audit:
On Friday 3rd October, the schools WOW monitors and two Junior Road Safety Officers
participated in a safe route to school audit. They were accompanied by two
representatives from Hampshire County Council’s road safety team, two of our school
governors and the local PCSO. They were tasked with identifying possible locations
around Bishop’s Waltham where parents could park their cars and walk, with their
children, on a safe route to school. The aim is reduce the number of cars around the
school at drop off/collection times by encouraging more families to PARK & STRIDE.
The JRSO’s and WOW monitors are now in the process of trying to persuade the PARISH COUNCIL to
allow parents to park their cars at the following locations when dropping off or collecting their
children from school.

If we are given the green light, parents will be issued with a ‘Park & Stride’ sticker for their car
windscreen, along with a map showing the safe route to walk to school from the parking location.
We will of course keep you informed.
Parents Evening Meetings:
By now, you should have been made aware of the day and time of your parents evening
appointment. Please arrive approx. 10minutes before your scheduled appointment as this
will give you time to look through your child(rens) work.
Please ring the school office ASAP if you have forgotten (or not arranged) your appointment
date/time.
School Photographer:
The photographer will be in school on the afternoon of Monday 13 th October to take individual
photographs of the children. Please make sure your child is in full uniform (like they always
are). Family photos can also be arranged – taking place after school.
I appreciate that pupils in Year 5 have their swimming lesson on a Monday morning. Pupils are
allowed to bring in combs/brushes etc. if required. If you would prefer your son/daughter not to
swim on Monday 14th, please inform the teaching staff. Thank you
Fireworks Event:
Back for its 4th year - FoBS are organising a special ‘Family Fireworks Display.’
The event will take place on the evening of Saturday 1st November at Hoe Road
recreation ground. As well as a stunning fireworks display, there will be ample
refreshments available (burgers, soft-drinks, licensed bar etc.) and fairground rides for
the children.
All families should have already received a flier giving information about the event. Please complete
this form and return to school ASAP in order to secure your family tickets.
Fun for the whole family! Bring along friends/relatives etc. for what promises to be an amazing
community event.

Pumpkins on Parade:
For the 2nd year in a row, we want to decorate the whole of Bishop’s Waltham town
centre with pumpkin art – created by our pupils. Every child has been given a template
of a pumpkin and if they want them displayed around the town they need to do the
following:

- Draw a face (of your choice) onto the template and colour it in.
Hand the completed design into the school office by Monday 13 th October.
Competition:
We will be selecting 5 of our favourite pumpkin designs from across each year group and the
winners will be invited to CARVE a face into a real pumpkin on Wednesday 30 th October (1-4pm
Priory Park). The winners will also be invited to join a Pumpkin Parade – from the Jubilee Hall down
to the Fireworks event at Hoe Road on the evening of Saturday 1st November, where 3 final winners
(chosen by the fire brigade) will be awarded a prize.

Bad Hair Boogie:
Back by popular demand, the Bad Hair Boogie will once again be rocking in order to try and
raise more funds for the school pool. This fun social event will be taking place on Saturday
15th November (7.30-11.30pm) at the Jubilee Hall. As well as a licensed bar, two bands
have also been booked; Time Warm & Contra Band. Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased
from the school office.
Don’t miss out on a great night – secure your tickets today!
School Curriculum:
September 2014 marked the introduction of the new National Curriculum for
schools across England. The national curriculum sets out the aims and programmes
of study for each subject – detailing what learning must be covered. It is up to each
school to determine how/what will be taught, tailoring it to the needs and interests of its pupils.

Harvest:
Thank you very much too all of the families that brought in some harvest food
contributions at the end of September. The hall stage was jam-packed - full of a wide
range of food items. Your support was very much appreciated.
This year, all of the harvest food contributions were donated to Winchester Basics Bank.
Winchester Basics Bank provides emergency food and clothes to individuals and families in need and
aims to make appropriate resources available to the maximum number of people at their point of
greatest need.
PTA Welcome Meeting:
Thank you very much to all of the parents that attended the PTA welcome evening last week. It was
great to see so many new faces. I’m looking forward to an exciting year of fund raising!
Message about packed lunches:
If your child comes to school with a packed lunch in a CARRIER BAG – please can you
ensure that it is NAMED as some children are picking up the wrong bag and therefore
eating someone else’s lunch.

PE Kits and Swimming Kits:
Please can you ensure that your child has their PE/swimming kit in school each
week. PE is part of the national curriculum and so important to the health and wellbeing of the pupils. When they do not have their kit in school it causes disruption to
the class and increased administration for the school office – as well as your child missing out on
their lesson. Thank you for your support:

OFSTED has a specific area on its website designed to allow PARENTS to give their VIEWS on their
child’s school. Parent View asks for your opinion on 12 aspects of your child’s school, from the
quality of teaching, to dealing with bullying and poor behaviour.
The governors and staff at Bishop’s Waltham Junior would like to make a special PLEA and ask for
AS MANY of you as possible to take 5 minutes out of your schedule and complete the short online
questionnaire – in order to give your views about the school.

Parking around the school:
I have become increasingly concerned recently about the manner in which SOME parents
(BWJS/BWIS) are parking their cars around the school at drop off/collection times. Please
AVOID parking on the CORNERS/JUNCTIONS of the road as this obstructs the view of
oncoming cars. Selected parents are also BLOCKING the access foot-path on the road
leading up to the infant school which the children use to cross SAFELY.
I know it’s a busy time of day but please be considerate of others. The safety of the pupils is
paramount and I’m worried that the inappropriate parking is going to lead to an accident.
Thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.
Dropping pupils off at school for swim squad/early bird club:
Please can I remind parents to park their cars on the lower school playground when dropping your
children off at the above clubs and not on the staff car park. Thank you
Message to parents:
If parents need to hand things in for their children (snack money, letters, lunches, PE kits etc.)
please can you do so VIA the school office and not direct to the children over the school fence.
