Good News! From the Welcome Place Welcome Lutheran Church Pastor John R. Sutton, Jr., October 2014 Number 137 A congregation of the North American Lutheran Church Office: 979-251-7576 www.welcomelutheran.org [email protected] [email protected] Congregational Meeting October 26, 2014 Pastor’s Letter 9:00 a.m. After 7:45 service and before 10:00 service Please make plans to attend “The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ, for all who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, who God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by His blood, effective through faith.” Romans 3:22-25 I don’t know if they used to do this here in Texas or not, but I can remember years ago, when Mom and Dad would take my sister and me out to eat for breakfast, or if we were traveling from North Carolina down to Florida when we would stop for breakfast, it didn’t matter what you ordered, the waitress would give you “grits” with your meal, even if you didn’t order it. Now maybe that was just a “Southern Thing,” but you got it anyway. In a way, God’s grace is kind of like that. You didn’t ask for it, you didn’t earn it, nor do you deserve it. God just gives it freely. As we move into the month of October, we as Lutherans will celebrate Reformation Day on Sunday the 26th since Friday is the 31st of October. The Reformation is not about the nostalgia of what happened almost 500 years ago in Europe when a young monk by the name of Martin Luther defied the Pope of the Holy Roman Catholic Church by nailing the 95 theses (statements for debate written in Latin against the Roman Catholic Church for its corrupt practices) on the church castle door in Wittenberg, Germany in the year 1517, so we can say, “Look what we did, we are the original Protestants”. Rather the Reformation was an act of God’s grace working through Luther to move people back to the Word of God and the truth of the scriptures which in turn brings people to faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Now some folks may say, “What has this got to do with me? That event took place almost 500 years ago in a land so very far away.” I would say very simply this: by grace through faith you have been saved. You didn’t ask for it, you didn’t earn it and you certainly don’t deserve it; none of us do. This is what the Apostle Paul stressed in his letter to the Romans. God, our heavenly Father so desires that everyone turn from their sinful ways and live as His children and be drawn unto Him through faith in Jesus Christ. In the words from a song we all know, that we sang as children “Jesus Loves Me This I Know For the Bible Tells Me So.” That is grace. Just as God used Luther as His instrument in his day to move the church in a new direction, God can and will use us as His instrument in our day to move those who are seeking and searching for the truth in a new direction. By grace through faith you have been saved. Go and share the good news of hope and forgiveness found in the person of Jesus Christ our Lord, so that others may know that God’s grace is there for them too. May you have a blessed October. When prompted say, “Thrivent Choice.” It’s time again to save those shoe boxes and start filling them for the children around the world who get very little to nothing for Christmas nor anything throughout the entire year. This is a great time and way to extend the love of Jesus Christ to the children and their families who have never heard about Jesus or know that He cares for them. What a blessing to a child of God when they receive this simple gift and in the process learn of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Last year Welcome Lutheran Church sent 163 shoe boxes, so this year we would like to see our Church send that many or more. If you want to do a box/boxes and don’t have the time to shop or pack, we will gladly do that for you, which we have done in the past. The total cost to do a box is $25.00 which includes the $7.00 for shipping. Enclosed is a pamphlet that will help you in doing your box. There are extra pamphlets in the back of the church next to the little Christmas tree along with 2 boxes that are already complete for you to look at and maybe get some ideas on what to pack. There will be a workshop on Sunday, November 2nd after the 10:00 worship service with a light lunch. There will be a sign up sheet at the Christmas tree if you want to attend the workshop, so that I will have a head count for the lunch. Come join the fun and fellowship. Deadline for the completed Boxes is Sunday, November 16th. We will have the blessing of the boxes and the children who will receive them during worship service on November 16th. May God bless each and every one of you for the love that you will share with the simple gift of a shoe box and the difference that you will make in those children’s lives, for they will also receive the Word of Jesus Christ and the love that He graciously gives to all.
