Greetings GW family! I hope this month’s newsletter finds
you all well. We had a wonderful September here and are
looking forward to a relaxing October before we start the
whirlwind holiday season.
The highlight of September was our weekend trip to join
New Mexico’s district rally. We did just over 1300 miles and
had beautiful weather for all but about 30 of that. What a
gorgeous fall weekend! I’m really glad we went and got to
spend some time with friends from other areas. We also got
to visit the Carlsbad Caverns while there and ran down to
pick up Texas before we headed north again.
I hope you all are enjoying the extended fall weather and get
some rest this month. November will bring us several
Turkey bingeing opportunities which will support our other
local chapters! Must make room for turkey!!

In Case You Missed It……
Mystery Dinner Ride
September’s dinner destination was Mickey’s Steakhouse, at 70th &
Broadway. A great steak dinner was enjoyed by many of the 10
people in attendance. The weather was perfect and the traffic was
light for the 6 bikes and one car on the way to the restaurant.
October 22nd will be the last dinner ride for the year, and the holidays will be upon us soon. The mystery location will, most likely,
be a never before visited restaurant. This will likely be the last
scheduled ride of the season, so join us for a good time and try
It with great pleasure and honor that we get to introduce the new Colorado District Couple of the Year / Individual of the Year Coordinators, Rich and Linda Fuller. Rich and Linda have had significant experience in the program and we look forward to an exciting season for the
next group of Couples and Individuals!
When you see Rich and Linda, please thank them for taking on this position – congratulations are in order…

The Safety Corner— Team Riding
Paul De Baca, Rider Educator
Hello Wingers and Wingettes,
" First, let us not forget what brought us together in the first place "
This month I would like to address "TEAM/GROUP RIDING" and some aspects
thereof. Let’s jump right in and start with the beginning. I will also include some
personal observations that I think speak to the safety of the ride.
First, it is important for every rider to insure the safety of their own machine. The T-CLOCK system
works very well for this purpose. If you are not familiar with this you can find detailed information on
the internet from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). This has been covered in a former
newsletter so I won't go into detail on this one, I want to concentrate more on the ride.
Next, ensure that you start off with a full tank of gas, and an empty bladder. :-)
OK, now let's get to the ride. The information I am using is from the GWRRA Team Riding Manual by
Roy Meyers and Dan Hood and has been edited up to 2006, so it is pretty up to date.
There needs to be a briefing prior to the ride to discuss routes, gas stops, special needs, etc..
Then the person in charge needs to determine how many bikes and break them into groups if necessary.
It is recommended that there be groups of 5, but not more than 7. The spacing between the groups is
recommended to be approximately 1/4 mile or in a time frame about 15 seconds apart. Each group
needs to have a leader and tail with communication.
Hand signals are always recommended and need to be universal, so everyone understands.
Staggered riding is necessary for safety reasons. For example, each bike that is staggered needs to be
one second apart and there should be two seconds between bikes directly behind one another ( see
notes at bottom of this article ). This staggered formation needs to be observed when riding and then
when coming to a traffic light, it needs to still be staggered, but more compressed, with each two bikes
almost abreast of one another.
If coming to a stop sign, leader waits for the entire team to stop before proceeding. When safe, the leader
proceeds, and then it is the responsibility of each member to insure it is safe before proceeding.
Notes: Remember, speeds can affect distance and ability to control your machine.
At 60 miles per hour, you are covering 88 feet per second
At 70 miles per hour, you are covering 102 feet per second
At 80 miles per hour, you are covering 117 feet per second
These are just a few of the safe riding tips for Team/Group Riding. Observing these
will help to make your rides more pleasant and the ride will be safe, and that is what
we all want.
So, rubber down, and shiny side up...and ride into the sunset with glee…

Something That Came Across My Desk
Last week I was browsing my Facebook when someone had posted a video of an alternative to Motorcycle Trikes from Tilting Motor Works. This appears to be an option for
those looking for trikes, yet not quite ready to give up the thrill of the lean and carving of a
traditional two wheeler. This appears to be along the same concept of the Kawasaki MP3
where the dual wheels are in the front and they lean with the bike in the corners and
curves.
Out of curiosity I contacted the company to see if they can add their modification to a Gold
Wing as most of the pictures I saw were Harley type bikes. Surprisingly, the answer was “Yes”.
While Gold Wing modification is a new kit available they are moving into this model of bikes.
While I am not in the market myself for a trike, I know many people for many reasons have
converted while others are looking at making that
move. Traditional trikes are options, a Can-Am Spyder
is an option and now Tilting Motor Works is another.
If interested, take a look at the links below! If nothing
else, it’s an interesting concept for a big bike trike.

Breckenridge Run….Lelyn Peters
Something I wanted to share with you concerning an issue Chris Toomer brought up in the last news-letter
concerning the fact that his CB quit working on the way up to the District Convention in Breckenridge. I
was one of the riders with him. Interesting enough was that we did not find the solution until at the convention we asked Smitty about what could be the problem. His answer was to disconnect the battery for
ten seconds and then reconnect it. Well low & behold we did just that and the CB worked. Evidently the
computer reboots and corrects itself, who would have known?
Another reason this is interesting is that on September 1 I traveled to Freeman, SD (not by MC) to help my
brother-in-law cut silage. His cutter is a 2006 John Deere Model 7300. 500-600 H.P., impressive. A fairly
modern monster that cuts & devours corn like it it's favorite Dairy Queen treat. Being eight years old it is
very temperamental and on four out of eight days cutting the local JD dealer sent his best mechanic out to
recalibrate or adjust something because the indicator lights would tell us to correct something before it
would do it's job.
On one occasion the mechanic worked on the machine
for three hours and could not correct the problem.
Someone (I wonder who) suggested to disconnect the
battery & reconnect it. You guessed it, the computer
rebooted and we went to the field to cut corn. Thanks
Smitty, did you ever want to work on a silage cutter?

Colorado Grand Pass Tour Hosted by Chapter J
Are you working on getting your Passes for the Grand Pass program?
The pictures are really rolling in now! We are so excited to see all of the people who have participated in
the Grand Pass Tour this year. We actually ran out of pins and had to order more!! If you haven’t gotten
all your passes in yet, there is still time. Fall is a great time to enjoy our beautiful state. This summer we have
had several individuals and couples join the “Rocky Mountain Grand Pass Tour”. This is where we get out and ride our mountains
which takes us over passes throughout the state. Easy enough? Chapter J encourages you to stop and take a picture at the pass,
only if it is safe, to memorialize your ride. When you have seven passes or more, submit your application found on our website for
a Pin or new “Dangly Things”.
This month’s new members of the Grand Pass Tour are:
Mark Henze,
Tom Houdek
Fred Moghim
Chris Toomer
Donald Redline “Year 3”
Barb & John Pons
Emma Lape
The Colorado Grand Pass Program is open to all GWRRA members worldwide. It’s real simple: ride 7 or more of the 70
Colorado Passes over the course of the season to receive the Grand Pass Pin or Hanger Bar. If it is safe, take a picture
of you and/or your bike and submit the pictures with your annual application. It’s all about riding our beautiful state.
The guidelines and registration for the Grand Pass Program, as well as links to information on all Colorado
Passes can be found at the links listed below.

GWRRA’s Horizon Training Program Coming to Tucson, October 30, 2014.
You’re invited to Arizona District’s Horizon Workshop on Thursday, October 30, 2014. That’s the day before
our Arizona District Convention, so plan on coming early and enjoying this fun and interactive experience!
All of us can learn. We never know everything we need to. The human experience is a continual learning
process. We are never done, we can never cross the goal line, spike the ball and declare victory. Selfimprovement --learning-- is a journey, not a destination. That journey starts with birth and continues for a
lifetime. Have FUN and enjoy your journey.
Bob and I were fortunate enough to attend the original trial session of the Horizon Training program when it
was first being developed in the early 1990s. Imagine, a motorcycle organization developing a curriculum
designed to present such topics as Officer expectations as well as life skills, including communication techniques, planning and team building. The concept was to give folks interested in a leadership role a “toolkit”
of skills, tips and ideas as well as provide an overview and understanding of the GWRRA organization and philosophies.
We have attended and led many Horizon Program sessions throughout our twenty-year membership with
GWRRA and Horizons has kept its promise. And we’ve learned something new each time we attended the
course. If you are currently an officer of GWRRA or are interested in a leadership role, this is the class for
you.
The Horizons Program provides interactive sessions to learn and discuss ideas that enable participants to succeed in a leadership role. You will complete the Program with an understanding of the expectations of you as
a leader AND how to bring FUN to your gatherings, rides and events.
The Horizons Program starts with an overview of GWRRA and then moves on to basic communication skills.
These are the very skills that are needed to build and grow a successful Chapter, develop a supportive leadership team, and keep members happy and coming back.
Many of the skills we discuss can easily transfer over into your day-to-day lives. We even touch on the
officer/spouse relationship and partnership. We all know that our personal relationship comes first and we
discuss tips on keeping it in the forefront.
Your Horizons Program will include interaction with participants from other Chapters, ensuring that you’ll
make new friends and build a support network within our GWRRA family.
If you decide to attend the Horizons Program, we promise your time investment will pay back dividends for
years to come in both GWRRA and your personal life.

2015 COLORADO DISTRICT RALLY
Montrose
The location for next year’s Colorado District Rally was
announced at Breckenridge this last week and I am happy to say we will be going to Montrose, Colorado. August 13-15, 2015. For
those not familiar with Montrose, it is located on the western side of Colorado about 270 miles from Aurora and just a little over 100 miles North of
Durango. Montrose is the home of the Black Canyon National Park
which is one of the nation’s most breathtaking scenic treasures. Carved
through solid granite over countless millennia, the dark canyon walls
plunge an awe-inspiring 2,700 feet to the Gunnison River below boasting
the highest sheer drop in the continental US.
Just 45 minutes south of our host town is Ouray, CO nestled in the San
Juan Mountains which not only provide plenty of four wheel drive trails
(jeeps for rent) but is the start of the Million Dollar Highway which stretches down through Silverton and on through to Durango. To the East is
North Rim of the Black Canyon, Highway 92, which has breathtaking
views of Blue Mesa Reservoir has to be just as fun as the Tail of the Dragon with all of the twists and turns. Telluride, CO is just a little more than
an hour away from Montrose.
The ride to and from Montrose can be an adventure especially if you are
on a motorcycle. You have the opportunity to see some of the best parts
of Colorado from your Goldwing, Valkyrie, trike or bike. With an altitude
of 5790 I am sure many people will have a opportunity to get out and see
the sites.
Currently Stu Oltman from Wing World Magazine is planning on being a
guest speaker so come prepared with your questions.
