Yashwant call to
follow JP's values
RANCHI, OCT 11 /--/ Senior BJP leader Yashwant
Sinha today said whenever
social upheaval has arisen,
great people have emerged
to restore peace and prosperity and Jayaprakash
Narayan was one such stalwart.
"Whenever crisis hits
society, a supreme personality emerges to deal with it.
And Jayaprakash Narayan
was like that supreme personality," the former external affairs minister said
here. "But again things become the same after some
days after the restoration,
because evil dominates human nature. We have to take
a pledge that we will tread
the path shown by JP, who
dedicated his life for values," Singh said.
"Jayaprakash Narayan
never asked anything for
himself. He did not accept
any position. How many
people are there to follow
his footsteps", the senior
BJP leader questioned. He
was addressing a gathering
on the occasion of JP's birth
anniversary jointly organised by 74 Chetna Manch
and JP Vichar Manch, the
two organisations formed by
Jayaprakash Narayan's followers who went to jail during Emergency.
On the occasion, the two
organisations among others
demanded a strong Lokpal
that should also cover the
post of chief minister.
Former Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Chandreshwar
Prasad Singh claimed
"power changes hands but
the system remains the
same." The Ranchi MLA
cited examples saying how
regimes led by RJD's Lalu
Prasad and JDU's Nitish
Kumar in Bihar did not
change the system.
Referring to economic
disparity in the society,
Singh quoted an example
saying, "The poor run miles
to eke out a living while the
rich run miles to digest the
food eaten overnight." He
supported the demand for
installing JP's statute in
Ranchi and exhorted to follow JP's ideals to usher in
values in the society.
Evacuation of endangered
Bonda tribals begins
BHUBANESWAR, OCT 11
/--/ The shifting of endangered Bonda tribesmen has
begun from their age-old
habitats on the Bonda hills
in Malkangiri district,
which is anticipated to be
the worst affected in the Cyclone Hudhud.
Official sources said the
district administration was
asked to shift the tribesmen
as the the Bonda Hills, home
to the about 7,000 particularly vulnerable tribal
group, comes along the
course of the cyclonic
storm. The administration
has targetted to shift about
2,000 members of Bonda
tribes to more secure places
as they live in unsafe
'kuchha' houses on the hill
top. "The evacuation of
Bonda tribes from upper
Bonda Hills area is now under way," said a senior government official engaged in
the process.
Chitrakonda
MLA
Dambaru Sisa, who is also a
member of the Bonda tribal
community, told PTI over
phone that he has been trying to convince the tribesmen and women to move to
safer place in view of the
cyclone. "Many of them are
reluctant to leave their huts.
The identified 2,000 tribal
people have never come
down the hills in their lifetime," said the MLA, who is
monitoring the evacuation
process. According to
Santosh Rath, the district
welfare officer and incharge of Bonda Development Project, said community leaders have been engaged to convince the tribals
to shift to safer places.
"We do not allow others
to motivate them as Bondas
are basically temperamental. Evacuating those from
the lower Bonda areas is
comparitively easy but convincing those residing in
the upper hills to shift is a

Gogoi turns 81
GUWAHATI, OCT 11 /-- / Assam chief minister Tarun
Gogoi today turned 81, but he spent the day resting on the
advice of doctors. Gogoi, suffering from cough due to dust
allergy, had undergone a medical check up at the Guwahati
Medical College Hospital here on October 8 and was advised rest for a few days by doctors. CMO officials said that
the chief minister would not celebrate his birthday, but
would spend the day with his family. Gogoi is serving as the

tough job and requires to be
handled carefully," he said.
The Bondas are being sheltered at two gram panchayat
buildings, at Andrahal and
Mudulipada. This apart,
three permanent school
buildings are also ready to
accommodate them, Rath informed. Apart from engaging community leaders in
the job, the help of members of panchayati raj institutions has also been
sought, Rath said.
Arrangements
have
been made to run free kitchens to provide cooked food
to the tribals at the centres
set up to shelter them, he
added. Evacuation of the
Bondas is essential as their
hills located about 4,000 feet
above sea level are expected to be pounded by
very heavy rains and hit by
landslides due to the very
severe cyclonic storm, Special Relief Commissioner P
K Mohapatra said.

BJP: Naveen
PHULBANI, OCT 11 /--/
Launching a broadside
against BJP and Congress,
chief minister Naveen
Patnaik today said people
have "lost faith" in both the
national parties and their
ideology as they had
"moved away" from the people.
"Leaders of both BJP
and Congress are tall talkers and dole out false promises", Patnaik said addressing a series of meetings in
Kandhmal district as part of
BJD's campaign for the October 15 by-election to
Kandhamal lok sabha seat.
Charging BJP and Congress
with indulging in "divisive
politics", the chief minister
said people have rejected
both the national parties in
the hustings. While BJP was
against secularism in the
countr y, the Cong ress had
lost its past glory and fame,
he said.
The four-time Odisha
chief minister said: "I am
committed to serve Odisha
till my last breath". Listing
various schemes launched
by his government, Patnaik
said BJD was committed to
work for the uplifting of the
poor, downtrodden and economically backward people. The chief minister said

Sushil slams JD-U govt for 'spate'
in crimes against women
PATNA, OCT 11 /--/ Expressing concern over
"spate" in atrocities against
women in Bihar, including
the rape of six dalit women
in Bhojpur district, senior
BJP leader Sushil Kumar
Modi today hit out at JD-U
government for its "failure"
to crack the whip against
perpetrators of such crimes.
The rape of six women
by three accused in
Kurmuri village of Bhojpur
district two days ago has
shocked everybody and exposed holes in the law and
order situation of Bihar in
which criminal elements
appeared to be calling shots,
the former deputy chief
minister of the state said in
a statement. The rape cases
against women has increased alar mingly, with
1128 cases being recorded
last year, and the figur e
stands at 708 till July 2014,
he claimed, adding that the
numbers will be much more
than those made public as
many cases are hushed up
by local people and in a
number of other cases, the
police refuse to take complaints from the victims.
An utter sense of insecurity dogged women, particu-
larly those living in rural
areas, as they got no protection from the state government and local administration, he alleged. Launching
a attack on former chief
minister Nitish Kumar for
"deterioration" of law and
order situation in Bihar and
"rise" in the number of
crime against women, the
former deputy chief minister recalled that Kumar
used to pat himself for
women and girls moving
around in night too to harp
on improved law and order
situation in comparison to
"lawlessness" that prevailed
during the three terms of
RJD.
"Why law and order situation has suddenly turned
so bad in Bihar, particular
in the context of spate in
crime against women?"
Modi said and asked Nitish
Kumar to explain it. Similarly, there has been spurt in
cases of murder, kidnapping, bank loot and dacoity
in running trains, besides
rape, Modi alleged and expressed fear that the state
was being pushed back to
days of "jungle raj", referring to JD-U's bonhomie
with RJD.

Bodh Gaya temple gets I-T notice
PATNA, OCT 11 /--/ The Income Tax department has issued notice to Bodh Gaya`s Mahabodhi temple, Buddhism`s
holiest shrine, for not filing annual return of its income of
over Rs.100 crore through donations, an official said today.
Deputy commissioner of I-T department Saurav Roy said
notice was issued to the Bodh Gaya Temple Management
Committee (BMTC) for not filing returns. The BMTC member secretary N Dorjee said the notice had been received,
adding: "It is true that the temple committee has not filed
its annual return." Dorjee cited the delay on the part of IT
department to issue a PAN card to the temple committee. "In
the absence of the PAN card, how can the temple committee will file its return," Dorjee asked. An I-T official in Patna
said on the condition of anonymity that temple committee
has never filed return of its income and expenditure till
date. "Every one, including religious and non religious institutions, which have sources of income are required to file
the I-T returns annually as per the law," he said. Dorjee said
the temple committee would start filing returns soon after
it gets the PAN number. Last year too, the I-T department
served notice to the temple committee for not filing of returns.
The 1,500-year-old Mahabodhi temple is a World Heritage Site, where the Buddha, who was born at Lumbini in
neighbouring Nepal, attained enlightenment around 2,500
years ago. The Bodh Gaya temple is visited by millions of
pilgrims annually from all over the world, especially from
Sri Lanka, China, Japan and the southeast Asian region.
Y V Reddy calls for uplift of Dalits
PATNA, OCT 11 /--/ Expressing deep concern with plight
of dalits in India and discrimination against them, the 14th
Finance Commission chairman Y V Reddy today called for
corrective measures at societal level for their uplift.
The Dalits continue to lag behind in terms of socio-economic empowerment and education despite provisions being there in constitution for emancipation and uplift of
these people, he said in his inaugural speech on two-day
seminar on the topic 'Dalits in India - Past, Present and Future' in the premises of Commerce College of Patna. The
caste system and social prejudice against dalits appeared
to be among many reasons for their plight which the society can itself rectify and take along the weaker sections
with them as equals for benefit of all, Reddy, who is also a
former RBI Governor, said. Reddyu identified education as
another barrier creating obstacle in the path of forward
stride of dalits and said that emphasis must be laid on educating the people from weaker sections so that they could
improve their lives as well as that of their families and society at large. The 14th Finance Commission chairman also
offered wise counsel to decision makers to take adequate
measures at policy level to ensure socio-economic development of dalits and said that their progress was imperative
for overall development of the country.
