Your GEA Programme Team: Ute Becker, Jim Burgess, Harald Cramer October 2014 Art Tour Specials in October When: Tue Oct 21, 17:45 Sat Oct 25, 12:00 Sat Oct 25, 14:45 Where: Alte Pinakothek Transit Info: Tram 27 or 28 to Pinakotheken StadtBus 100 to Pinakotheken Meeting Point: Lobby of Alte Pinakothek Description: An opportunity to visit the major Canaletto exhibition being mounted in the Alte Pinakothek this autumn. The exhibition runs from 17 October 2014 until 18 January 2015. With around 80 loans from public and private collections in Europe and the USA, this exhibition will be the first comprehensive show of Canaletto’s work in Germany for almost 50 years and will provide a unique opportunity to accompany the Venetian painter on his journey through 18th-century Europe. The exhibition shows Canaletto’s pictures of Munich for the first time within the context of exemplary paintings and drawings from all his creative phases. Views of royal cities, palaces and villas will form the focus of attention and bring to life the places where Canaletto worked – from Venice and Rome to Dresden, Vienna and Warsaw. John Langton will guide GEA groups visiting the exhibition and has arranged times listed above. The numbers for each group will be strictly controlled and will be limited to 15 persons on each occasion. There will therefore be a need for anyone wishing to join one of the sessions to register directly with John, and only by email to ensure that there is an opportunity for everyone to see the works displayed. Each person will receive, after 12th October an acknowledgment and, in the event that no places are available for your preferred date, you will be offered an alternative if possible. Until 11th October John will be in Greece but applications will handled upon his return on a strictly “first come first served basis.” Registration: Admission: Organizer: Please therefore communicate directly with John at [email protected]. This sufficiently well known section of his oeuvre, however, does not form part of the present project at the Museum Brandhorst. The images selected for this focus on a different aspect of his work. Politically enlightened and liberally minded, Avedon made four large photographic murals from the end of the 1960s onwards, in the face of the social and political upheaval and change in the USA, that are of exceptional importance in the history of this medium. Three of these four works by Avedon are being shown in the Museum Brandhorst. The murals will be complemented by three other groups of works, comprising a selection of striking portraits made from the ’50s onwards. The broad spectrum of the sitters ranges from Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe to Francis Bacon, Truman Capote and Bob Dylan, as well as encompassing Samuel Beckett, Ezra Pound, Marcel Duchamp and Buster Keaton. There is a special reason why the Museum Brandhorst is staging this project. This is the first time that these works by Avedon belonging to the Udo and Anette Brandhorst Foundation are being shown to the public. Apart from the mural Mission Council, there are more than thirty portraits and photos from the “In the American West” series. Loans from private collections are also to be shown, while all other works come from the Richard Avedon Foundation, New York. Registration: Required. Numbers are limited to 15 persons and you will need to register with me to ensure a place. I regret that anyone not pre-registered will be disappointed in not being able to join our group. A short email will suffice and I will confirm places after my return from Greece on 12 October. Admission: 7 € (concessions 5 €). There is no charge for the tour.
