2015 ATW Tapestry Design Prize for Architects ENTRY FORM

2015 ATW Tapestry Design Prize for Architects
ENTRY FORM
The 2015 ATW Tapestry Design Prize for Architects is open to architects, multidisciplinary design groups (including
at least one architect) and students in the field of architecture. Entrants are requested to provide a design or designs
(limit of three) that celebrate contemporary architectural space through the placement of tapestry. The design can be
in any form: drawing, digital image, painting, collage etc. so long as the form is 2 dimensional. Entrants may submit
their applications in digital format or physical format.
For exhibition purposes the scale of the design should not exceed 800 mm in the largest dimension. The
hypothetical site for the display of the winning tapestry design will be the Denton Corker Marshall designed Australian
Pavilion in the Giardini in Venice.
The winning design will be selected on the basis of:
1
Artistic merit.
2
Ability to engage to a high degree with the unique qualities of tapestry.
3
Ability to design a major artwork that responds to a contemporary architectural space.
4
Capacity to celebrate tapestry in architecture, through understanding of materials form, design and
collaborative interpretation.
Information about the site:
Australia has had a national pavilion in the prestigious Giardini since 1988 – one of only 29 countries to have a
permanent national presence at the Biennale.
The original pavilion, designed by Phillip Cox, was built as a temporary structure and was opened in 1988. Australia
will be the first country to redevelop and build a 21st century pavilion in the Giardini.
Australia’s new pavilion, designed by Denton Corker Marshall, will provide an elegant home to showcase the best of
Australian art and architecture. The redevelopment will be delivered through a public-private partnership, in the same
manner that the Philip Cox pavilion was realised a quarter of a century ago.
The new Australian Pavilion will be completed in time for the 56th Venice Biennale in May 2015. This is a significant
opportunity to affirm Australia’s commitment to the Venice Biennale and to present the best of Australia’s
contemporary visual art and architecture.
