The rising superstar from Linda Britton’s kennels annihilated her opposition with a blistering front-running display which left onlookers in no doubt that she is the best greyhound racing in WA at the moment. Jumping from ‘the lemon’, box five, Star Recall launched straight to the front and was never in danger as she surged to the finish line nearly nine lengths ahead in the very quick time of 27.12. She is now undefeated in nine attempts on the Mandurah circuit and is racing in career Star Recall will be joined by kennelmates Burundi, Gomes and Proven Will in the final but her biggest threat is the Christine Robartson-trained Last Day. Last Day won his heat in impressive fashion when he sweep the lead from box eight and stormed away to score in 27.41. He loves racing on the Peel surface and is more suited from an inside draw in the final so if any greyhound in the final is going to give the favourite grief it’s likely to be him. One part of that strategy includes maximising racing opportunities for all racing greyhounds and extending their racing career whenever possible. RWWA is of the belief that this is a critical concept in WA, given the current difficulties being experienced in sourcing quality interstate racing stock to race here. Therefore extending the racing life of greyhounds already racing in WA will go some way to addressing the situation. To commence this process, RWWA has created a new non-feature race for greyhounds that are nearing the end of their racing careers in which they will have an opportunity to race against similar-aged greyhounds. This initial Veteran Race concept will be implemented on a trial basis and following a review; more detailed Veteran Racing concepts will be discussed and developed into Grading Policy prior to any implementation in OzChase. The initial concept of conducting these races as one-off non-feature series finals allows the trial to proceed without any concept of veteran racing in current Grading Policy. The initial age eligibility to compete in these races will be for greyhounds whelped on, or before a date 42 months prior to the actual meeting date. This age restriction has been based upon a review of the age of greyhounds that have recently raced in WA and will be subject to ongoing review as the pool of Veteran chasers potentially increases. The Cannington Wednesday and Saturday meetings effective from Wednesday 8 October and Saturday 11 October respectively, will contain the following race types: • Wednesday – 1 division of a Provincial Grade 5 530m Veteran race with total stakes of $1,690 ($1,125 to the winner) • Saturday - 1 division of a Provincial Open Grade (1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) 530m Veteran race with total stakes of $2,295 ($1,525 to the winner). Greyhounds must be City Sprint Grade 5 to be eligible. These races will initially be non-penalty to the winner, but will remain full award to any unplaced runners. The form from Veterans races will rank equally with normal Provincial Class races for the moment, until Grading Policy relating to Veteran Racing has been established. These initial Veterans Races will be programmed as one-off finals, hence reserves will be seeded. Nominators are encouraged to provide second preferences back to regular Graded Races for their greyhounds during this trial period.
