OCTOBER 2014
BOTHELL SONS OF NORWAY
President’s Message
Dear Members:
I wish to thank those who helped with the September Dinner: Mary, Chris, Mike, Seth,
Bob, Marlene and everyone else who helped make for a fun and filling dinner and social time. It was also great to hear from our Youth and the members of our lodge who
give their summers to work and teach the youth of District 2.
Looking ahead, I will be contacting members to see if they would be willing to help
with our Nominating Committee so that we can put together another strong group of
officers to take us thru next year. The Officers of our lodge are what keep us going
thru the years by setting up and running all of the classes that we as members get to
enjoy. If you would like to be an Officer of the lodge please contact me or a member
of the Nominating committee.
Many of our members are busy preparing for the upcoming Bazaar and Bake Sale on
Saturday, November 1st and the Lutefisk Dinner on Saturday December 6th. I hope
that many of you will be ready & willing to come out and support the Lodge by working
or participating in both of these events.
There will be a work party at Trollhaugen on Saturday, the 11th of October. If you
come for the work party the Trollhaugen board will provide lunch and an overnight
stay. We have a great time working together and an enjoyable evening of fellowship
afterward.
I hope to see you around the Lodge.
Tusen Takk
Bill

Silent Auction & Dessert Auction – Oct 15th 2014 Lodge Meeting
Please consider donating an item or dessert for the October 2014 Auction to benefit
the Ray Berg Memorial Scholarship Fund. This year we had 6 recipients and it is a
great way to support our youth.
This year we are adding a couple of changes. Instead of the Parcel Post Auction
we will have a silent auction with the items displayed. Suggestions for donations
are items purchased on your travels, Nordic items, gift certificates, theme baskets
and services such as house cleaning and preparing a dinner.
We will also have
a dessert auction with our favorite auctioneer, Fergus Prestbye. Desserts can be
a plate of your favorite cookies, Nordic favorites, a cake, a pie or any other family
favorite.
We would like to have the donated items for the Silent Auction by 6 pm on October
15th so that we can start the silent auction during the Social Time. If you would
like to make arrangements to drop off your item before October 15th, please call
Laurie Beach @ 425-949-7094. Desserts will be auctioned after dinner.
Come and join in the fun while supporting the youth in our lodge.

FALL FOOD DRIVE FOR HOPELINK
Lets continue to bring food or money to our Lodge meetings for
October and November to benefit HOPELINK in Bothell.
I will deliver the food to the HOPELINK Food Bank after our
November 20th Lodge meeting so the food is available for
Thanksgiving.
Please share generously of food items or money and give thanks for our good fortune. There are many people in desperate need.
We surely can surpass the 220 pounds of last years giving. It is so greatly appreciated.
Call me if you have any questions. Tusen takk for your generosity.

SOCIAL DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Kay Schertzl
In September we enjoyed the 3 "C's"... cuisine, campers and culture. Bill Hicks fed
us his special spaghetti dinner, this year with a twist... Norwegian Noodles. Campers
Ben Kent, Diana Hicks and Ryan Hacker shared their experiences and feelings
about the Norwegian summer camps they attended. Marilyn Hansen's rosemaling
class shared their beautiful craft, a part of Norwegian culture, with us, and Selma
Snaring and Marilyn talked a bit about the art and the classes. It was a night filled
with friends, fun, food, information... and President Bill even got our business done.
Our October meeting brings 2 great events. Selma Snaring will make kumle, a traditional Norwegian dish made from oats with a salt pork center. Mmmm. The
Scholarship Committee will present their annual fundraiser, this year to include a silent auction and a dessert auction. Expect some great items on which to bid. I
know of two that came from Norway this summer, and a special pin, just for starts.
All proceeds go to our lodge's Ray Berg Scholarship Fund, which supports our high
school senior scholarship program.
And remember in November, the Vikings return to enjoy our Thanksgiving dinner
with us and share some more of their culture.

Is it time for a Secret Survey word to see that you are still reading to the end? How
about... "auction". I'll ask at the meeting, so remember the word and to come show
your support for the event. Thanks.

BAZAAR AND BAKE SALE
November 1, 2014 9:00am to 3:00pm
This is a bustling event, full of happy people enjoying a delicious lunch while catching up on the latest news with friends and NEW guests of our lodge. The first stop
is of course, the bake sale with an array of homemade cookies, cakes, breads and
donuts fresh out of the deep fryer. Then our vendors, selling their exquisitely made
items, rosemaled wood bowls, plates etc., Scandinavian dressed dolls, ornaments,
nissene and the like, machine made sweaters in Norsk designs, an assortment of
kitchen towels, pot holders, aprons etc. and beautiful artificial wreaths and table arrangements. Three new vendors will add to our already varied selections . Karla's
Victorian handmade scarfs and delightful baby bonnets make great gifts, Sissy
makes exquisite bead jewelry and greeting cards and Mike prints Scandinavian tshirts, cups and bags.
As you all have seen and tasted the variety of cookies, pies and cakes for sale on
the lunch table at the bazaar and bake sale, I'm encouraging you to avail yourself to
bake any of these goodies. Be apart, it's a Great Feeling!!
Selma will be delighted to hear from you.

LESE GRUPPE
(“Reading Group”)
PLEASE JOIN US! All are welcome. Lese Gruppe will meet on
Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bothell Lodge.
At our September meeting, we discussed Kristin Lavransdatter: I, The Bridal Wreath,
the first of a series of three historical novels for which Danish-Norwegian author
Sigrid Undset won the Nobel Prize. It is the story of a woman's life in 14th Century
Norway. One attendee had read this series 45 years ago! Because it is such compelling reading, we will continue with Volumes II and III in the coming months.
Future meetings will be held on the second Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. at the Bothell
Lodge:
It is not required that you read the book in order to attend the meeting. To check out
books from the Sons of Norway library, please sign the logbook located on the counter.
For information about Lese Gruppe, please contact Myrna Ramstad at
(206) 365-6913.
LIBRARY CORNER
Our Library has just received several really fun paperback novels written in Norwegian for the Norwegian scholars in our Lodge. We now have some romance novels, including one from a British TV series set in World War II about the RAF. The
books include a Western, a story set in the early Viking era, one about the Marathon Man, the TV series Dynasty, and one about John Creasy as Inspector West.
There is even a science fiction book, the title of which translates to “”Death Goes to
School.” I have some popular novels written in Norwegian in my own library that
have helped me learn Norwegian. They are fun to read and were easily ordered
online at www.aschehoug.no. Aschehoug & Co. is a large publishing company in
Oslo and is very accommodating and pleasant to order from.

OCTOBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH
October is designated by Sons of Norway as Foundation Month. So what exactly is this foundation,
you ask. The foundation mission statement tells us in a nutshell: “We award scholarships and grants to
promote the heritage and culture of Norway, and provide assistance to our members, lodges and communities.” As lodge members, this is OUR foundation administered at the international offices in Minneapolis.
The foundation provides scholarship funding that continues the tradition of enabling the next generation to become active in their quest of knowledge regarding our heritage and culture, both past and present. The students will go on to bring their knowledge and skills back to our members, lodges and communities. They are, after all, our future.
Please note the available scholarships and if you know someone who might be interested, now is the
time to alert them to look into these opportunities.
Oslo International Summer School, a six week
Summer of study at the University of Oslo.
King Olav V Norwegian-American, for American students 18 and older to study their Norwegian heritage and for Norwegian students 18 or older to study American culture at accredited institutions.
Astrid Cates/Myrtle Beinhauer, funds post high school study.

chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering.
Helen Tranvold Folk High School, for students 18-23 to study for one year at a Norwegian Folk High
School in Norway.
Lund Fund, provides scholarships for study abroad experiences through accredited post high school
educational institutions.
The foundation also supports Sons of Norway lodges through grants.
The General Heritage & Culture Grants allow
Cultural exchanges, research and preservation
projects.
The Local Lodge Partnership Grants provide the
Means for lodges to participate in community
Heritage fairs, provide cultural programming and
promotion of lodge activities.
The Helping Hands to Children Grants support youth programming and Adopt a School participation.
Helping Hands to Members.
For more details or an application you can go to
www.sonsofnorway.com/foundation
The Foundation is funded by the donations of members. Donations are welcome and are tax
deductible if you itemize on your returns. Some people join the “pledge by the month program.” Others
may make a Legacy Gift which is $5,000 or more.
Another way you can help is to put your coins and dollars in the red pig each month. Our pigs are
passed from table to table during dinner on lodge nights.
