District 7’s lodges should now be back to normal activities which means that elections are upcoming and they should all by now have their nominating committee named. The nominating committee’s mandate is to find candidates for every lodge officer and director position that will stand for election during the November meeting. Some lodges find it necessary to Erik Brochman “recycle” some officers due to lack of volunteers to fill some positions, so if you think that you can fill any of the positions, and that you have time to do so, please contact your lodge’s nominating committee and tell them you are interested in running for a position. Since last report from me we have been to The International Convention in Jacksonville, Fl., and I will give a short resume of what came out of the Convention. I must start with the last item on the agenda which was the election of officers to the International Board, where our own Ron Stubbings was elected International Vice President. Ron won with a convincing number of votes against two well known candidates from larger districts in the order. Our congratulations to Ron and we wish him the best of luck in this very important position on the Board. It should also be mentioned that Gloria Benazic is now officially elected International Director to the International Board. International President is Jon Tehven, Secretary Dan Rude and Treasurer Raymond Knutson. As a result of deliberations at the Convention, there have been a few law changes in our constitution which could have some impact on us here in District 7. One change will now allow District 7 one additional delegate for the International convention, as long as we keep improving our membership. Other resolutions that might or might not affect our district will in due course be reported in the Viking magazine. I also suggest you check www.sofn7.com for reports from some of the delegates which also include other activities during the convention. The American Fraternal Alliance has created a new website that will make reporting volunteer hours and other information related to lodge events much easier. A few lodge secretaries around the order, have volunteered to try out this new website, and I had the opportunity to participate in a webinar today introducing this event/hour reporting site to some of the participating lodges and districts. It is quite clear that this will be a great help to the lodge and district secretaries in the reporting of the required information. The plan is that this system will be rolled out to all the lodges next year. Stay tuned for more information on this subject. Congratulations to Golden Ears Lodge 137 with their 29th anniversary in October. Fraternally, Erik The Vikings have arrived in Victoria . Royal B.C. Museum’s “Vikings - Lives Beyond the Legends” exhibit is on until November 11th, 2014. Sleipner is planning a group excursion for October 25th and 26th. A block of rooms is being held for any interested individuals. Please mention “Viking Exhibit” when you book a room. The Hotel phone numbers are 250-386-1422 and 1-888-468-3514 We plan to meet just before 11:00 am in front of the Museum on October 25th. Group rates for groups of 15 are $14.40 for the museum and $9.10 for the Imax theatre. If you are interested please contact Larry Brawn at [email protected] for more information Lodge Updates Sleipner Lodge #8 Vancouver, B.C. I can’t believe that another month passed since I last wrote here. Summer is coming to an end and it is now time to look forward to some of the events that we have lined up for the fall. Please join us for the annual Seterskveld Celebration which will be hosted by Sleipner Lodge and the Norwegian House Society in October. This information is tentative and there is more information available on www.sleipner8.com This is usually a great evening of fabulous food and dance. Hope to see everyone there. The next event is the annual Welcome to Norway Craft Fair on November 2nd. More information on page 8. The September long weekend at Hatzic was a little different this year. Instead of the annual Western Weekend we tried something totally new. We invited two local bands to come and entertain us on the Saturday night. After the excellent potluck dinner we were all treated to some folk, bluegrass and Celtic tunes by Shades of Green which was followed by Whiskey Priest who rocked us with their classic rock tune until midnight. What an excellent party! Of course I mustn’t forget the afternoon program Bands, Shades of Green, above, & Whiskey Priest, below, perform at Hatzic on September long weekend 3. which consisted of the Nerf tm. shooting gallery for all and the toonie toss for the adults. Big thanks to Anita Jacobsen for organizing the bands and the fun stuff, Tom and Shannon and all the other volunteers for participating in this event. The fall leaseholders meeting is scheduled for October 4th and the annual Hatzic clean up weekend is scheduled for November 8th and 9th. The shadows are getting longer, fall is in the air. Vivian Bates, Publicity Eidsvold Lodge # 53, Victoria, B.C. Eidsvold Lodge has offered a number of activities over the past summer. Firstly, June ended off with the presentation of Milestone Pins and the Tusen Takk awards at the awards presentation night on June 28th. The 2014 Tusen Takk award was presented to Ellen Coates in recognition of all the work she has done for the lodge. July started off with the lodge participating in the Sidney Day Parade on July 1st. Along with the Viking ship float, a number of members dressed in bunads and Viking attire also participated in the event. During the second week of July (July 8th to 10th), Cultural Days (Norsk Arv Camp) was held at the Sons of Norway Hall. This is a day camp occurring over three days featuring cultural skills programs for adults and children. Cultural skills programs offered included knitting, felting, wood carving, Rosemaling, and weaving. On July 13th the annual Salmon Barbeque was held at Esquimalt Gorge Park. away as Williams Lake and Quesnel. It was a beautiful, sunny day. After the parade, the Folkdancers entertained with many dances, inviting spectators to join in on the last one, which was quick to learn. Next on the agenda was the presentation of membership pins to several people: Bjorg Schurer and John Martinsen for their 60th, Unna Skuggedal for her 50th, Andrina Benazic, Eidsvold Lodge members enjoy the annual Salmon Barbeque, held at Cal. For the children, we had a variety of games with prizes. They then had lots of fun running around throwing Frizbees or making large soap bubbles with their winnings. The food table was amazing as usual, with a beautiful Celebration cake at the centre of it all. Nine of our members attended the District 7 Convention at the end of May, and had a very enjoyable time. The June Ladies meeting was held at the home of Edna Rouleau, combined with a Lefse Bee. Not many can host this Bee, as a lot of counter and table space is needed for about 6 “Rollers” as well as 5 or 6 Lefse grills. All this Lefse is needed for our Annual Garden Party held in the middle of June. This Year the Garden Party was held at the home of Christine Sullivan, with a record 89 people attending. Again we were lucky to have a sunny day, and we made a good profit, which will go towards the $ 1,000 we donate to local charities before Christmas. It is a lot of work for the members, but well worth the effort. Midsummer was this year held at our f arm. For two weeks we worked at getting rid of thousands of nasty Caterpillars, who infested our entire forest as well as the house’s exterior and swimming pool! A few were still there at the party, but people did not freak out, as they had them too. Mons and I hired a small band, playing accordion, guitar and harmonica. They knew a lot of Norwegian tunes, and everyone enjoyed singing along. After the meal, we also had the traditional bonfire, if not as big as in Norway. (we are surrounded by trees, so can not risk a forest fire.) On a sad note, Bjorg Schurer lost her son, Bruce (53), to cancer in May. She then broke her hip on August 19. I am happy to say that she is doing really well after her surgery. So, get well soon, Bjorg! Elsa Aase, President and Publicity Director. Dawson Creek Lodge #79 Dawson Creek, B.C. Our September meeting and the beginning of another year, took place a few days ago. We decided to hold President Vern Braaten &Chelsea Heppell enjoying May 17th, 2014 celebrations with other Lodge Members. Dawson Creek Lodge members, Arlan Dokken & Lawrence Napen, sharing in a Lefse Making Bee our member appreciation supper in conjunction with a brief meeting. Forty-one members and guests enjoyed a most delicious Chinese Smorg at a local restaurant. We welcomed three new members and treated them to supper. It seemed everyone had a good summer and enjoyed the beautiful hot weather, but much too short. This week began with the white stuff already, and that was a little disappointing. Maybe now we will continue with a beautiful fall. We only hope. We will be moving to new facilities for our regular meeting starting in October. Several of our members toured the newly renovated old post office building, in Dawson Creek, that now hosts The Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre. They were happy with the new facility and the new meeting room we will rent. A few of our members are experiencing health issues of late. We wish them all, Get Well wishes. Until Next Time Loretta Pratt, Publicity Viking Lodge #81 Surrey, B.C. Viking Lodge would like to thank all members and guests who attended our Chili Luncheon on September 4th. It was a great success. We were 32 persons, a really good turn out. Thanks to John and Jytte the Chili was great and we are so glad they got it ready sooner rather than later as Jytte, unfortunately , has had serious surgery . We are all thinking very much about you Jytte so get well soon as, we miss you. Bernice made a great blueberry sauce to go with the ice cream, and many came earlier and pitched in to help. We are lucky to have such good members and friends. Our next meeting will be October 2nd at 12.30 pm. We plan another Fund Raiser, this time with European wieners, salads and desert at a cost of $12,00 per person. These small fundraisers help us cover some of the expenses, like the Leiflette and stamps etc. It would be great if we could think up a really good idea for having one big dinner each year, like in the old Above: Else Vea & Jakob Tengs, Viking affiliate member, Andy Anderson, member Berit Anderson, & affiliate member Bette Stubbit.
