Dear Parents and Students,
I wanted to thank the CardinalFest Committee, headed by Mrs. Katie Steigmeyer, and all of those who helped plan and carry
out another successful parish festival. From the tents and the food, to the games and the ice buckets, I appreciate all of the
enthusiasm and community good will displayed by everyone involved. We have a very nice parish and school community, and it is
good to celebrate fellowship and fun through the festival each year.
We are currently reviewing our stance on fashion boots for the coming winter months. Over the past few years, we have allowed
fashion boots to be worn from November 1st until Spring Break. However, as you know, ladies’ fashions cannot be predicted nor
quantified by any reasonably sane individual. In other words, I can’t keep up with the girls’ styles and fashion trends in shoes and
boots. We have some pretty sloppy boots out there ranging from more slipper type exploding squirrel styles, to send me out to the
polo grounds for a match and a spot of tea styles. With so much perpetual change, we kind of lose the idea of having a uniform dress
code. We will be laying out clearer guidelines in the coming weeks, so until November 1st of this year, no boots of any kind –
fashion, construction, cowboy, etc. – should be worn during the school day. Thank you and look for further guidance in the
coming weeks.
We begin school at 7:50 a.m. There will be traffic every day. There may be rain, wind, snow, and ice. That is part of life. I still
have a consistent thread of students who just cannot arrive on time. Please parents, leave earlier for school. If you are coming on to
the lot after 7:47, you are pushing the reality of your child exiting the car, walking to class, and crossing the homeroom threshold by
7:50 a.m. We are having too many students arrive late. Leave earlier and relieve that anxiety students feel when they consistently
arrive late. Thank you to all who arrive early. Your punctuality and patience is appreciated.
We collected 10,000 box tops in the first week of our drive. That is fantastic! We have two more weeks of collecting.
Keep up the eating and keep up the clipping!
In closing, a word from St. Gregory Nazianzen, “Give something, however small, to the one in need. For it is not small to one who
has nothing. Neither is it small to God, if we have given what we could." Have a nice weekend. Sincerely – Rob S.

Parish Hall.

Thurs.
Oct. 23
8:15 AM – 8:00PM
Fri.
Oct. 24
9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
A flyer showing a few of the books is included with today’s newsletter. This is only a small sampling of what is at the fair! There is
always a wide variety of books, computer CD-Roms, art activities, and posters. Remember, books make wonderful gifts for Christmas
or birthdays! Also, AS LAST YEAR: You may purchase an extremely huge selection of books ONLINE by going to the St.
Charles School website ( stcharlesschoolfw.org/support-us.php ) and clicking on the Book Fair link.
http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=stcharlesborromeo
Many of the series books are posted there along with all sorts of age level books! The ONLINE fair runs from October 15 through
November 4. Try it and see how easy and fun it is! Profit from our ONLINE FAIR also goes to our school!
The teachers compile Classroom Wish Lists that are posted at the fair, so you will be able to donate books directly to your
child's classroom. Also available are gift certificates which you may give to the teachers and then they will be able to spend them at the
fair. All proceeds go toward purchasing more books for the library and the classrooms. Students enjoy having brand new books added
to their classroom libraries!
Scholastic has an All for Books program. There will be a box at the check out table for donations. The money (a dollar or loose
change) donated will buy books for our school. Scholastic will then match this money to buy books for national non-profit organizations
dedicated to helping families in need. These organizations include the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Kids in Distressed Situations,
and the National Center for Family Literacy.
Please stop by the school office to receive a visitor’s pass during school hours and you will be directed to the Parish Hall for the
book fair. Also, when you come to conferences with your children, come directly to the Parish Hall and shop. That way, you will have
your children to help you choose books which they will be excited to read! You may pay by cash, checks, charge cards or debit cards.
I am very excited about our fantastic book fair! The online fair will be an added bonus again this year! Check out our school
website! I hope to see each of you in person at our school fair! Please stop in to browse! Barb Fisher ☺
IN THE WINGS
The Civic Theatre has an In The Wings Program whose goal is to enrich the educational experience of youth through the medium of
the Theatre Arts. Since 1988, over 137,000 theatrical experiences have been provided to at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth
and families. The core of the IN THE WINGS Program is to provide free tickets to children and their families for special IN THE WINGS
performances of Civic Theatre productions. They believe that this exposure is, for many, an unfamiliar art form, which will spark
creativity, produce lasting impressions, and reap many benefits. Tickets are given to qualifying schools and service organizations. Since
the Civic’s IN THE WINGS program is specifically to make free tickets available for at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth and
families through schools and other agencies, first preference for the 40 tickets allowed St. Charles will be given to those families who
qualify for free/reduced lunches or textbook assistance. Children must be a minimum of 6 years old.
Talkbacks are always held after each IN THE WINGS performance for the audience to have a chance to chat with actors, crews, and
directors and ask questions about the rehearsal process, set design and construction, costumes, and any other aspects of the
productions. All are encouraged to stay and participate.
The Fort Wayne Civic Theatre is pleased to present “Shrek The Musical”. Based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film, Shrek The
Musical brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get
ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a
villain with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that
calls for a real hero. Shrek The Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone!

Social Skills Training
In the next several weeks, we will be offering social skills groups to our students. The groups will be based on the social skills
curriculum called Skillstreaming. Another program that may be used (depending on the students) is called Super Skills. This curriculum
teaches a variety of social skills including self-responsibility in the classroom, friendship skills, and skills for managing impulses. During
the group, social skills are taught using modeling, role-playing, and discussion. In addition to the positive impact of learning social
skills, students who participate in small groups often develop a stronger sense of belonging to a social group and a more positive
attitude about school.
The groups will meet during school hours for approximately 6-8 weeks. Mrs. Maureen McAleavey, school social worker, will facilitate
them. The group will meet one time each week and the group will last approximately 20 -25 minutes. These groups will be offered
throughout the year. If you think these groups may benefit your child, please contact Mrs. McAleavey at 969-4036 or e-mail her at:
[email protected]. Thanks!
Children of Divorce Support Groups!
St. Charles will again be offering support groups for children who have experienced a loss through parent divorce or separation.
The groups will be for grades 1 through 4. Our workbook is entitled, “A Catholic Guide for Kids: When Parents Divorce or Separate”,
by Lynn Cassella-Kapusinski.
Our groups will run for six weeks beginning the week of October 27th . We will be meeting at a non-academic time during the
school day.
In order to help plan for the groups, we are requesting that the registration be returned by Monday, October 17th to Mrs.
McAleavey.
