UAW-LUCA Excellence in Communication Contest
The UAW-LUCA Excellence in Communication Contest recognizes UAW
local unions that have achieved outstanding labor communications. Our
contest also recognizes and applauds the hard work of local union
members who contribute to our local union publications, websites and
other communications to our members.
The 2014 print contest recognizes the best communications created
between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013. All entries must be post-
marked or submitted on the contest website at
uawlucacontest.org by Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014. No late
entries accepted.
All LUCA members are invited to enter this contest. LUCA
membership is FREE and open to all UAW local union communicators.
If you are not a LUCA member and would like to join, please send an
e-mail that includes your name, local union and daytime phone number
to UAW LUCA Coordinator Gwynne Marie Cobb at [email protected] or
call (313) 926-5291.
Judges will evaluate the entries on the basis of originality, creativity,
readability/comprehension and effective UAW communication.

1A - newsletters from local unions
with a distribution of under 1,500

distribution of 1,500 or more
Categories
Enter no more than three (3), not including General Excellence.
(2) Best Front Page — Judged on content
and overall quality. Submit front page
only, not entire issue.
(4) Best Use of Original Photos or
Graphics — Original photographs taken
by a UAW member, or original cartoons,
graphics or digital illustrations created for
your local communications. Include caption
and identify photographer and/or artist. First
place winner receives the Fred Taylor
Award.
(3) Best Original News Article or
Editorial — News article or editorial focusing on a local union.
(5) Best Political Coverage — Article
focusing on legislation, a candidate or
public policy issue.
(1) General Excellence — Submit two (2)
consecutive issues to be judged on overall
quality (writing, editing, design, layout, use
of photos, cartoons and graphics).
(6) Best Workplace Coverage — Original
coverage of an organizing campaign, contract bargaining or resolution of a workplace
issue.

WEBSITE CONTEST
The purpose of the UAW-LUCA Excellence in Websites Contest is to recognize UAW
local unions that have achieved outstanding labor journalism using local union websites.
It is also a way to recognize and applaud the hard work of local union webmasters.
Entries must include a PDF of the following:
• A statement of purpose (or mission statement) for the local union site
• A brief description of why the site was developed and whether it was
developed by local union members or an outside vendor
• The frequency of site updates
• The names and number of people who work on the site or provide
content for it
• The date (month/year) the site launched
Entries must be:
• An approved UAW local union site
• A live site
Categories
Enter no more than three (3), not including General Excellence.
(1) General Excellence — Site will be judged
on content, design and structure, including
ease of navigation and use.
(5) Best Political Coverage — Article
focusing on legislation, a candidate or public
policy issue. Must have been posted in 2013.
(2) Best Original News Article or Editorial
— News article or editorial focusing on a local
union. Must have been posted in 2013.
(6) Best Web Content — Photo album,
interactive feature or form-based content.
Must have been posted in 2013.
(3) Best Workplace Coverage — Original
coverage of an organizing campaign, contract
bargaining or resolution of a workplace issue.
Must have been posted in 2013.
(7) Best YouTube Video — Video produced
and created by local UAW member(s) posted
on YouTube in 2013 to educate members
and community on a topic related to working
families. Include a brief description of the
video, the producer(s) name(s), the YouTube
URL, the video's title and the date it was
posted. Videos judged on production quality
and effectiveness of presentation.
(4) Best Use of Original Photos or Graphics — Original photographs taken by a UAW
member, or original cartoons, graphics or
digital illustrations created for your local website. Include caption and identify photographer
and/or artist. Must have been posted in 2013.
First place winner receives the Fred Taylor

SOCIAL MEDIA CONTEST
The purpose of the UAW-LUCA Excellence in Social Media Contest is to recognize UAW local
unions that have achieved outstanding UAW communication and networking using a Facebook
page, blog, Twitter or e-blasts.
Entries must include a PDF of the following:
• A statement of purpose (or mission statement) for the social media used.
• A brief description of why the social media tool was developed and whether
it was developed by local union members or an outside vendor.
• The frequency of site updates, postings or e-blasts.
• The names and number of people who administer or work on the page,
blog, Twitter account or e-blasts.
• The date (month/year) the page, blog, Twitter account or e-blasts were
started.
Entries must be:
• Social media approved by the local union.
• A live page, blog, Twitter account or e-blast.
Categories
(1) Best Use of a Facebook page - Page should effectively promote the local's
labor activism using regular, multiple posts and adequate monitoring. Include a
screen shot of the home page, if possible.*
(2) Best Use of a Blog - Blog should promote the local's labor activism and
include timely, original content and regular links to articles and video from other
sites. Include a screen shot of the home page, if possible.
(3) Best Use of a Twitter account - Account should promote the local's labor
activism through multiple, regular tweets leading users to additional information on
a timely basis. Include a screen shot of the home page, if possible.
(4) Best Use of e-blasts - E-blasts should create regular contact with members
through use of an e-mail list designed to get members to take specific action on a
labor or related issue. Include a sample e-blast.
*To do a screen shot, on your keyboard click the "PrtScn" button and then open
a photo editing software, and paste ("CTRL + V") the screen shot in. Save the
image afterwards.

"Pops" Nudi Award for
2014 UAW LUCA contest
There are so many unsung heroes among the talented
UAW-LUCA membership. This is your opportunity for
celebration and to honor your union brother or sister's
dedication and contributions to the labor union
movement.
Nominate the UAW-LUCA member for the the legendary
"Pops" Nudi Award. This prize is presented annually.
The award was named after its first recipient, the late
Alfred H. "Pops" Nudi, and is given to a local union
communicator who has shown tireless dedication and
many years of commitment to labor communication.
The 2014 Pops Nudi Award recipient will be recognized
at the 2015 UAW-LUCA conference at Black Lake in
June. We will also honor the winner throughout our
social media outlets.

ENTRY DEADLINE: Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014.
REMEMBER:
• All entries must be originally produced for your publication, website, video or official e-mail distribution to members.
• All entries must have been produced and distributed/published/posted between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013. Read the requirements carefully and choose the
appropriate division and categories on the entry form.
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Submit entries and fill out an entry form using the contest website at
uawlucacontest.org.
• All Website Contest and Social Media Contest entries MUST be
submitted on the contest website only. No hard copy entries accepted
for ANY ENTRIES.
• For Print Contest entries, Please enter all categories using the contest
website. Incomplete entries will be disqualified. Submit one (1) copy of each entry for each category. If you don’t have originals, a clear 'PDF' will
do (except for the General Excellence category, where you should submit two (2) actual, consecutive issues). Mailing address is:
