Fall hunting season is
finally upon us. For many,
this is a much anticipated
time of year. Whether you
are planning to hunt that
monster bull elk you’ve
been scoping out or you’re
planning to spend the time
with family out in the
mountains, you don’t want
anything to spoil these special moments. Here are a
few tips for a successful
hunting season:
Get out and test your
gear. Haven’t fired that rifle
since last season? It’s time
to go and make sure you’re
still on target. Nothing
ruins a long, hard hunt like
equipment that’s not functioning correctly.
Make your shot count!
Anyone who’s been seconds
away from taking that shot
knows that sometimes your
nerves can get the better of
you, however it’s always
important to think safety
first. What is in front of
your target? Is there anything beyond your target
that merits attention? Take
a couple extra breaths to
steady your hands, and be
sure of your surroundings
before pressing on the trigger.
Get back to the basics:
Review your regulation
handbooks! There are new
editions printed every year.
This means things change!
Make sure you are up to
speed on any changes for
the upcoming season. You
can find copies of regulation handbooks at any Fish
and Game office and most
license vendors.
Hold
other
hunters
accountable. If you put in
the time to make sure you
have a fun and successful
hunt, shouldn’t everyone
else be held responsible to
put in the same preparation time and understand
the rules as well? If you
know of or see any suspicious activity related to
hunting, fishing or trapping, make the call to
Citizens Against Poaching
(CAP) at 1-800-632-5999
and report the incident.

anonymous unless you
wish to provide information
about yourself or a way to
contact you.
Marsh Creek Road is under
construction, expect delays

Marsh Creek Road (#203)
October 1 and will continue for up to five weeks.
There will be temporary
delays Monday through
Friday throughout the
construction period.
Work will take place
from the intersection with
State Highway 21 and con-
tinue for approximately
4.25 miles and consist of
resetting culverts and
placing additional surfacing to the roadway.

Anglers may see some of
the best catch rates that
we’ve had in the past several
years if the current trend in
fish dam count numbers and
weather conditions continue
into the fall.
River conditions currently
are excellent for fishing.
During the four-day period
ending September 28, the
average count at Lower
Granite was right around
5,000 fish per day.
Also in September, B-run
steelhead run was projected
to come in at 126 percent of
original predictions. B-run
steelhead generally arrive
later, and are much larger
than A-run steelhead.
Runs of naturally reproducing salmon and steelhead
in Idaho have generally
improved since historic low
abundances experienced in
the mid-1990s, but they are
still lower than the 1960s and
early 1970s. The declines in
run sizes led to federal
Endangered Species Act listings of Snake River salmon
and steelhead starting in
1992.
Over the past two decades,
hatchery-produced fish have
provided the only sport fishing and harvest opportunity
for steelhead in Idaho.

Dusky Grouse
Ruffed Grouse
Idaho’s three species of forest
grouse, the Dusky Grouse,
Ruffed Grouse and Spruce
Grouse, are found right here in
the Salmon Region. Each is
unique in appearance, behavior,
and habitat preference.
The
Dusky Grouse, formerly called
the Blue Grouse, is a large bird
about 20 inches in length of uniform sooty-gray color. Females
are smaller, mottled brown
above, with a gray belly. Males
sport a bright yellow-orange eye
comb and white feathers surrounding fleshy reddish-purple
air sacs on each side of the neck.
During courtship, these air sacs
are inflated for a flashy show of
color that amplifies their deep,
owl-like hooting call, audible up
to ¼ mile away.
In breeding season, Dusky
Grouse favor forest edges and
openings, where they feed on a
mixed diet of insects, green
plants and berries. In winter, in
an unusual reverse migration,
they head uphill to dense conifer
stands, where they subsist on fir
needles.
The Spruce Grouse is smaller
and stockier than the Dusky
Grouse. Males have a black
throat edged with white, black
breast and a scarlet eye comb.
Female plumage varies from
gray to reddish brown. Male
courtship display includes a
series of low frequency hoots
and a gliding flight ending in two
loud wing claps – like gunshots.
Spruce Grouse inhabit dense
conifer forests of spruce, fir and
lodgepole pine. In winter, their
diet consists entirely of conifer
needles. In other seasons, they
feed on green shoots, leaves,
berries, flowers and insects.
Spruce Grouse are noted for
their boldness with humans,
often feeding or perching mere
feet from observers, a behavior
that has earned them the nickname “fool hen.”
Ruffed Grouse are similar in
size to Spruce Grouse, but have
a distinct crest on the head,
black ruffs on the sides of the
neck, and a dark band near the
tail tip. Males are renowned for
their “drumming” courtship display, which produces a series of
accelerating, muffled thumps
that can be felt as well as heard.
The sound is made by beating
wings against the air to create a
vacuum, as lightning does when
it makes thunder.
Riparian
areas and other moist mountain-shrub habitats are commonly used by Ruffed Grouse.

Deer season opens tomorrow
Regular deer season opens October 10 in most
regions of Idaho.
In some areas, a regular deer tag allows hunters
to take either mule deer or white-tailed deer. A
white-tailed deer tag allows a hunter to take only a
white-tail.
Many areas across the state also offer antlerless
youth hunt opportunities, but check the 2014 Big
Game Rules brochure carefully for the areas where
youth hunts are open.
To hunt deer in Idaho during the regular season,
you must have a valid 2014 Idaho hunting license
and a deer tag. There is still a good number of second deer tags available at a discounted price for
2014.
Fish and Game Conservation Officers ask that
hunters report any poaching or suspicious activities they encounter or hear about while hunting.
Most serious poaching cases are solved only with
the help of ordinary Idaho residents, hunters or
others who report crimes. If you have information
about a wildlife crime, call the Citizens Against
Poaching hotline at (800) 6325999, 24 hours a day. Callers
may remain anonymous.

to check out Idaho Fish and
Game’s Backcountry Game
Meat Care Guide. The guide has
helpful tips to ensure proper
handling of game to avoid wasting the meat.
Be advised you do need a
hunting license and tag to hunt
whatever species you seek on
private land. You also must
stay within the season rules
that Fish and Game has set up
for the unit. All wildlife belongs
to the residents of Idaho, even
when it is found on private
property.

A few facts
Mule deer and blacktailed deer (collectively
called
mule
deer,
(Odocoileus hemionus) are
icons of the American
West. They are distributed throughout western North America from
the coastal islands of
Alaska, down the West
Coast to southern Baja
Mexico and from the
northern border of the
Mexican
state
of
Zacatecas, up through
the Great Plains to the
Canadian provinces of
Saskatchewan, Alberta,
British Columbia and
the southern Yukon
Territory.
Mule deer are primarily browsers, with a
majority of their diet
comprised
of
forbs
(weeds) and browse
(leaves and twigs of woody shrubs).
Deer digestive tracts differ from cattle and elk in
that they have a smaller rumen in relation to their
body size, so they must be more selective in their
feeding. Instead of eating large quantities of lowquality feed like grass, deer must select the most
nutritious plants and parts of plants.
Because of this, deer have more specific forage
requirements than larger ruminants.
Mule deer are generally easy to identify due to
their large mule-like ears (generally 3/4 the length
of the head).
They usually have a distinctive black forehead,
or mask, that contrasts sharply with a light grey
face. The lighter facial coloration makes the eye
rings and muzzle markings seem less obvious.
They are brownish-gray in color, have a white
rump patch and a small white tail with a black tip.
Mule deer usually live 9-11 years in the wild and
can live to be much older when in captivity.
They range from 3 to 3-1/2 feet tall at the shoulder, 4-1/2 to 7 feet long and have a tail that is 5 to
8 inches long. They can weigh between 130-280
pounds. The female deer are smaller than the male.

They have better nighttime vision
than humans, but less accurate daytime and color vision.
Mule deer can detect slight predator movement up to 600 meters away,
but they are not very good at detecting motionless forms.
Some biologists estimate that a
mule deer's sense of smell is up to
1,000 times stronger than a human's.
Research suggests that a mule deer
can detect human odor at up to a half
mile away. They can detect water that
is up to two feet below ground.
A mule deer does not “flag” its tail
(like a white-tailed deer, but often
bounces away in a motion called
“stotting,” in which all four hooves
push off the ground at the same time.
With each bound, a mule deer may
jump as high as two feet and as far as
15 feet. A mule deer may not escape
as fast as a white-tailed deer, but a
mule deer is more effective in quickly
moving through rugged terrain.
Both species may stop and look
back at the source of potential danger, but this behavior is more typical
of mule deer.

Fish and Game seeks to provide fishing access
Providing
access
for
anglers to fish is an important
part
of
Idaho
Department of Fish and
Game’s (IDFG) fisheries program.
Most water in Idaho is
owned by the State, but
anglers are not allowed to
trespass across private property to fish.
Public access must be
maintained or provided in
many areas. When surveyed,
anglers regularly indicate
that providing access for fishing is an important function
of IDFG.
The department spends
about 5 percent of the fisheries budget on access. This
doesn’t include the steelhead
and salmon permit account,
which is funded from the cost
of permits issued to anglers.
The department uses $4 from
each of these permits to
acquire,
maintain
and
improve access to the anadromous fishery.
IDFG is required to spend
15 percent of the funds it
receives from the Sport Fish
Restoration
Federal
Aid
Program (Federal Assistance)
administered by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, on
motorboat access projects.

October 4, 2014 a call was made to
Citizens Against Poaching about a dead
cow elk in the Salmon River at the Deer
Gulch Access along Highway 93. When
Idaho Fish and Game Officer Malcolm
Clemenhagen responded to the location
he found a cow elk had been shot by a
large caliber rifle and wasted. It had
been shot one time, apparently in a field
next to the highway. The elk was probably shot sometime around October 1. If
