In many cases, the technician’s face is the first that a pet sees and the team relies on them to make patients feel comfortable and cared for. The ACVS Technicians’ Program will help to increase technicians’ knowledge and confidence on the job. C On Thursday, the program will focus on pain management and anesthesia with topics including: n Fluid Therapy in the Peri-Operative Patient (Davis) n Hypovolemic Shock (Davis) n Waste Anesthetic Gases: What’s the Hype? (Reuss-Lamky) n Post-Operative Nursing Care & Complications (Davis) n The Pain Stops Here: Regional Anesthetic Blocks (Reuss-Lamky) Friday’s program will emphasize the technicians’ role with the surgical patient. n Joint Replacements: Elbow, Knee, & Hip (Ellis) n Surgical Toys: Staplers (Browning) n Surgical Toys: Electrosurgery & Vessel Sealing (Peycke) n Hemostatic Agents (Peycke) n Aseptic Technique: How to Avoid a Break in Sterility (Browning) n Surgical Site Infection: Surveillance & Prevention (Thieman) S u m m i t AO VETERINARY TECHNICIANS’ COURSE 10:15am–6:00pm, Thursday, October 16 Spencer Johnston and Susan Schaefer (co-chairs) Course fee: $250 early / $300 late Available to technicians Designed specifically for the veterinary technician, this annual course, growing in popularity among technicians, is a full-day of lecture and laboratory sponsored by AOVET North America. The hands-on laboratory, presented by leaders in both small animal and equine orthopedics, will introduce technicians to instrumentation, implants, and techniques used in veterinary orthopedic surgery. Technicians will be presented with information in the art and science of fracture repair using bone models, bone plates, and orthopedic instrumentation. Preparation of the surgical patient and immediate postoperative care will also be discussed. Technicians will gain a greater understanding and enhance their knowledge base to better assist the orthopedic surgeon and thus take a greater, more active role in the decision-making process and care of the surgical patient.
