A light continental breakfast will be served beginning at 7:30am.
A Systems Approach to Problem Solving in
Healthcare: It’s Not Rocket Science
ames P. Bagian, MD, PE, former
NASA astronaut, will present the
2014 Mark W. Allam Lecture, “A Systems
Approach to Problem Solving in
Healthcare: It’s Not Rocket Science.” At
the University of Michigan, he currently
serves as Professor in the Department of
Industrial Engineering and Anesthesia;
Director of the Center for Healthcare
Engineering and Patient Safety, and
Chief Patient Safety and Systems
James P. Bagian, MD, PE
Innovation Officer. Dr. Bagian has
developed numerous patient safety–related tools and programs that
are still in use nationally and internationally. He continues to serve on
numerous federal and college committees and has authored more
than 50 publications.
J
The Mark W. Allam Lecture is named for the late Dean Emeritus of the
School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Allam
was a co-founder of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He was
an avid proponent of the concept of “one medicine,” the idea that the
similarities between human and animal medicine are great and that
these two fields can benefit considerably from the discoveries made in
each field. The lecture was instituted to foster this concept and has been
given annually since 1972.
Hear first-hand the experiences of world-renowned leaders in veterinary
surgery, while enjoying breakfast or lunch. View list of speakers (pages
23–27).

ideal for new Diplomates, current residents, and those who recently
finished their residency programs. Within a variety of topics, these
questions will be answered:
n
Can I afford to be in academia?
n
How do I negotiate for what I want vs. what I need?
n
How can I build a successful career in academia?
n
What does tenure track vs. clinical professor mean?
n
How do I balance family and career?

Spencer Johnston and Susan Schaefer (co-chairs)
Course fee: $250 early / $300 late
Available to technicians
Designed specifically for the veterinary technician, this annual course,
growing in popularity among technicians, is a full-day of lecture and
laboratory sponsored by AOVET North America. The hands-on
laboratory, presented by leaders in both small animal and equine
orthopedics, will introduce technicians to instrumentation, implants,
and techniques used in veterinary orthopedic surgery.
Technicians will be presented with information in the art and science of
fracture repair using bone models, bone plates, and orthopedic
instrumentation. Preparation of the surgical patient and immediate
postoperative care will also be discussed. Technicians will gain a greater
understanding and enhance their knowledge base to better assist the
orthopedic surgeon and thus take a greater, more active role in the
decision-making process and care of the surgical patient.
